Studies on a low Reynolds number airfoil for small wind turbine applications

In contrast to large horizontal axis wind turbines (HAWTs) that are located in areas dictated by optimum wind conditions, small wind turbines are required for producing power without necessarily the best wind conditions. A low Reynolds number airfoil was designed after testing a number of low Reynolds number airfoils and then making one of our own; it was tested for use in small HAWTs. Studies using XFOIL and wind tunnel experiments were performed on the new airfoil at various Reynolds numbers. The pressure distribution, C p , the lift and drag coefficients, C L and C D , were studied for varying angles of attack, α. It is found that the airfoil can achieve very good aerodynamic characteristics at different Reynolds numbers and can be used as an efficient airfoil in small HAWTs.

Prediction of Excess Air Factor in Automatic Feed Coal Burners by Processing of Flame Images

In this study, the relationship between the visual information gathered from the flame images and the excess air factor 2 in coal burners is investigated. In conventional coal burners the excess air factor 2. can be obtained using very expensive air measurement instruments. The proposed method to predict ） for a specific time in the coal burners consists of three distinct and consecutive stages; a） online flame images acquisition using a CCD camera, b） extrac- tion meaningful information （flame intensity and bright- ness）from flame images, and c） learning these information （image features） with ANNs and estimate 2. Six different feature extraction methods have been used： CDF of Blue Channel, Co-Occurrence Matrix, L-Frobenius Norms, Radiant Energy Signal （RES）, PCA and Wavelet. When compared prediction results, it has seen that the use of co- occurrence matrix with ANNs has the best performance （RMSE = 0.07） in terms of accuracy. The results show that the proposed predicting system using flame images can be preferred instead of using expensive devices to measure excess air factor in during combustion.

Ocular hypertension in patients with central/hemicentral retinal vein occlusions： cumulative prevalence and management

AIM： To prospectively evaluate the cumulative prevalence and the management of ocular hypertension（OH） in patients with unilateral acute central/hemicentral retinal vein occlusions（C/HCRVOs） over the course of 3 y. METHODS： The study included 57 patients with unilateral acute C/HCRVOs. All patients underwent a comprehensive ophthalmological examination of both eyes. OH associated with C/HCRVO in patients showing a score 〉5% for the risk of conversion to primary open angle glaucoma（POAG） was treated with OH medication. The treatment aimed for a decrease in intraocular pressure（IOP） to 〈21 mm Hg with a 〉22% reduction from the initial values. The cumulative prevalence of OH and the effectiveness of treatment assessed by the cumulative prevalence of conversion from OH to POAG, were estimated. RESULTS： Fifteen patients had OH associated with C/HCRVOs, the cumulative prevalence of OH was 29.4%（95% confidence interval, 16.9-41.9）. The mean value of the risk score of OH conversion to POAG for the 5 subsequent years was 11.7%±5.4%. The IOP significantly decreased from 25.67±2.16 mm Hg to 18.73±2.96 mm Hg. None of the OH patients converted to POAG during the follow-up period. CONCLUSION： The increased cumulative prevalence of OH in C/HCRVO patients indicates that OH is a risk factor for the appearance of venous occlusion. Patients with OH associated with C/HCRVO must be considered to be at high risk for conversion to POAG. Treatment with OH medications prevented conversion to POAG during the 3-year follow-up.

AIM：To apply the multifractal analysis method as a quantitative approach to a comprehensive description of the microvascular network architecture of the normal human ***：Fifty volunteers were enrolled in this study in the Ophthalmological Clinic of Cluj-Napoca,Romania,between January 2012 and January 2014. A set of 100 segmented and skeletonised human retinal images,corresponding to normal states of the retina were studied. An automatic unsupervised method for retinal vessel segmentation was applied before multifractal analysis. The multifractal analysis of digital retinal images was made with computer algorithms,applying the standard boxcounting method. Statistical analyses were performed using the Graph Pad In Stat ***：The architecture of normal human retinal microvascular network was able to be described using the multifractal geometry. The average of generalized dimensions（D_q）for q=0,1,2,the width of the multifractal spectrum（Δα=α_（max）-α_（min））and the spectrum arms＇ heights difference（│Δf│）of the normal images were expressed as mean±standard deviation（SD）：for segmented versions,D_0=1.7014±0.0057; D_1=1.6507±0.0058; D_2=1.5772±0.0059; Δα=0.92441±0.0085; │Δf│= 0.1453±0.0051; for skeletonised versions,D_0=1.6303±0.0051; D_1=1.6012±0.0059; D_2=1.5531± 0.0058; Δα=0.65032±0.0162; │Δf│= 0.0238±0.0161. The average of generalized dimensions（D_q）for q=0,1,2,the width of the multifractal spectrum（Δα）and the spectrum arms＇ heights difference（│Δf│）of the segmented versions was slightly greater than the skeletonised ***：The multifractal analysis of fundus photographs may be used as a quantitative parameter for the evaluation of the complex three-dimensional structure of the retinal microvasculature as a potential marker for early detection of topological changes associated with retinal diseases.

Intratunical bupivacaine and methylprednisolone instillation for scrotal pain after testicular sperm retrieval procedures

Aim: To investigate the effect of intratunical instillation of bupivacaine and methylprednisolone for scrotal pain, swelling and peritesticular fibrosis due to testicular sperm retrieval procedures. Methods: A total of 65 patients were randomly divided into two groups. In the instillation group (GI), 34 patients were administered 2.5 mL of 0.5 % bupivacaine combined with 10 mg/mL methylprednisolone before closure of the tunica vaginalis. In the control group (GC), 31 patients only received analgesics postoperatively by intramuscular route. The pain (by visual analogue scale, VAS) and duration of pain-free period after surgery between the two groups were evaluated at 2 and 4 h and at days 2 and 7 postoperatively. Results: The mean pain scores were significantly lower in the GI than in the GC group at 2 and 4 h after surgery (P<0.05 and P<0.01, respectively). The mean duration of pain free interval after the procedure was 47.8±16.9 (12-72) h in GI, which was significantly longer than that in GC [(9.9±3.6; 4-20) h]. Besides, in the GI, 29 % of patients were completely free from pain and 67 % had no scrotal swelling, but in the GC, all the patients required additional NSAID injection due to pain and only 3 % had no scrotal swelling. Conclusion: This study confirms that direct intratunical instillation of bupivacaine and methylprednisolone around the testis reduces the postoperative pain, scrotal swelling and peritesticular fibrosis.
