With global energy demand predicted to rise as the world population increases, there is a serious challenge to ensure energy security and also to reduce CO2 emissions. Atmo- spheric CO2 levels will reach about 800 ppm by 2100 resulting in about 4 ℃ rise in the earth surface temperature if no action is taken （CO2 Earth 2017）. At the 21st Con- ference of Parties （COP21） to the United Nations Frame- work Convention on Climate Change （UNFCCC） held in Paris, France from 30th November to 12th December 2015, 195 nations historically agreed to ＂combat climate change and unleash actions and investment towards a low carbon, resilient and sustainable future＂ with the aim to ensure global temperature rise is kept well below 2℃ （UNFCCC 2015）. To achieve this aim, a portfolio of technologies have been proposed, one of which is carbon capture, utilization and storage （CCUS）（Dixon 2016）.

This study investigated the prospect of using aqueous mixture of 1-butylpyridinium tetrafluoroborate （[Bpy][BF4]） ionic liquid （IL） and monoethanolamine （MEA） as solvent in post-combustion CO2 capture （PCC） process. This is done by analysis of the process through modelling and simulation. In literature, reported PCC models with a mixture of IL and MEA solvent were developed using equilibrium-based mass transfer approach. In contrast, the model in this study is developed using rate-based mass transfer approach in Aspen Plus. From the results, the mixed aqueous solvent with 5-30 wt% IL and 30 wt% MEA showed 7%-9% and 12%-27% less specific regeneration energy and solvent circulation rate respectively compared to commonly used 30 wt% MEA solvent. It is concluded that the ｜L concentration （wt%） in the solvent blend have significant impact on specific regeneration energy and solvent circulation rate. This study is a starting point for further research on technical and economic analysis of PCC process with aqueous blend of IL and MEA as solvent.

This paper presents modelling of a post-combustion CO2 capture process using bootstrap aggregated extreme learning machine （ELM）. ELM randomly assigns the weights between input and hidden layers and obtains the weights between the hidden layer and output layer using regression type approach in one step. This feature allows an ELM model being developed very quickly. This paper proposes using principal component regression to obtain the weights between the hidden and output layers to address the collinearity issue among hidden neuron outputs. Due to the weights between input and hidden layers are randomly assigned, ELM models could have variations in performance. This paper proposes combining multiple ELM models to enhance model prediction accuracy and reliability. To predict the CO2 production rate and CO2 capture level, eight parameters in the process were utilized as model input variables： inlet gas flow rate, CO2 concentration in inlet flow gas, inlet gas temperature, inlet gas pressure, lean solvent flow rate, Jean solvent temperature, lean loading and reboiler duty. The bootstrap re-sampling of training data was applied for building each single ELM and then the individual ELMs are stacked, thereby enhancing the model accuracy and reliability. The bootstrap aggregated extreme learning machine can provide fast learning speed and good generalization performance, which will be used to optimize the CO2 capture process.

Solvent-based carbon capture is the most commercially-ready technology for economically and sustainably reaching carbon emission reduction targets in the power sector. Globally, the technology has been deployed to deal with flue gases from large scale power plants and different carbon-intensive industries. The success of the technology is due to significant R＆D activities on the process development and decades of industrial experience on acid gas removal processes from gaseous mixtures. In this paper, current status of PCC based on chemical absorption--commercial deployment and demonstration projects, analysis of different solvents and process configurations--is reviewed. Although some successes have been recorded in developing this technology, its commercialization has been generally slow as evidenced in the cancellation of high profile projects across the world. This is partly due to the huge cost burden of the technology and unpredictable government policies. Different research directions, namely new process development involving process intensification, new solvent development and a combination of both, are discussed in this paper as possible pathways for reducing the huge cost of the technology.

Deterioration of air quality due to the increase in atmospheric emissions from biomass burning(BB)is one of the major environmental problems *** this study,we estimated the contributions of BB to PM_(2.5) concentrations in the municipalities of Soledad and Malambo located in the Colombian *** evaluation period ranged from February 24 to March 30,2018,a period with a high number of BB events recorded in the surroundings of the evaluated *** contribution of BB to the two sampling sites was estimated using the Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory(HYSPLIT)dispersion model with forwarding trajectories from each of the burning points identified by satellite images(n=1089).The PM_(2.5) emissions were determined using the fire radiative power(FRP),obtained by remote-sensing data,and corresponded to the radiant energy released per time unit by burning *** average PM_(2.5) concentrations during the evaluation period were 19.91μg/m^(3) for Soledad and 22.44μg/m^(3) for *** average contribution of BB to these municipalities was 22.8%and 28.8%,*** methodology used in this study allowed to estimate the contribution of this important source without knowledge of a previous tracer of BB,thereby increasing the use of the proposed procedure *** information would enable the implementation of effective mitigation,thereby diminishing the adverse impact of PM_(2.5) on the health of the population.

Determinants of Enrolment in Nigerian Universities

The study investigated the factors behind the enrolment profile in Nigerian universities using primary and secondary data. The secondary data were obtained from National University Commission （NUC） and published documents of National Bureau of Statistics （NBS） while primary data were from a survey of nine universities selected through purposive random sampling. The broad objective of this study is to identify the key factors influencing the enrolment profile in Nigerian universities and the extent to which human resource and funding affect enrolment. The study was empirical analysis which used Vector Auto-regression Model （VAR） and linear interactive or stepwise regression method for data analyses. The results showed that variables in the model （funding, academic and non-academic staff） accounted for 46.6% of the changes in enrolment and confirmed that both funding and academic staffhave effect on enrolment while the effect of non-academic staff is quite minimal. The model was statistically significant （F = 4.43） and also, funding （t = 3.00, p 〈 0.05）, academic staff （t = 1.77, p 〈 0.05） and their interactive effect （t = 2.97, p 〈 0.05） had significant effect on enrolment. While the effect of non-academic staff was not significant （t = 0.36, p 〉 0.05）. However, the interactive effect of funding and academic staff （KL） accounting for 25% of the changes in enrolment is more important than their individual effects： 5% for academic staff and 4% for funding. Therefore, interaction of funding and availability of academic staff has continued to constrain students＇ intake into Nigerian universities. We obtained historical data of rainfall in Warri Town for the period 2003-2012 for the purpose of model identification and those of 2013 for forecast validation of the identified model. Model identification was by visual inspection of both the sample ACF and sample PACF to postulate many possible models and then use the model selection criterion of Residual Sum of Square (RSS), Akaike’s Information Criterion (AIC) complemented by the Schwartz’s Bayesian Criterion (SBC), to choose the best model. The chosen model was the Seasonal ARIMA (1, 1, 1) (0, 1, 1) process which met the criterion of model parsimony with RSS value of 81.098,773, AIC value of 281.312,35 and SBC value of 289.330,84. Model adequacy checks showed that the model was appropriate. We used the model to forecast rainfall for 2013 and the result compared very well with the observed empirical data for 2013.
