Kinematic Analysis of Patients before and after Abdominoplasty

Background: Abdominoplasty has consistently been one of the top cosmetic procedures performed each year with a high patient satisfaction rate. Excision of the excess abdominal skin has been shown to reduce low back pain and improve posture. The effects of the excess skin removal would, theoretically, be demonstrated through changes in gait. This study aimed to measure kinematic differences during gait to obtain objective measures for abdominoplasty. Methods: Subjects were recruited from a large, academic plastic surgery clinic. Patients were included if they were 18 years of age, able to walk without an assistive device or any hindrance by any existing medical condition, and were scheduled for abdominoplasty. Kinematic measurements were taken before and after surgery using a plug-in-gait marker set, cameras, and a treadmill. Pre- and postoperative measurements were compared and a post-hoc power analysis was created. Results: Nine total patients were included in the study. Joint angles before and after surgery demonstrated moderate differences. However, analysis revealed few significant differences for spatiotemporal or kinematic variables. The power analysis demonstrated an inadequate number of patients to detect significance. Conclusions: Despite the literature describing subjective and objective improvements following abdominoplasty, we were unable to validate this. Overall, there were noticeable differences in joint angles pre- and postoperatively, though the study is too underpowered to reach statistical significance. This preliminary data shows that if the study was powered through a larger cohort, then more generalizable conclusions could be drawn.

Orphan diseases are rare diseases that affect less than 200000 individuals within the United *** orphan diseases are of neurologic and genetic *** the current advances in technology,more funding has been devoted to developing therapeutic agents for patients with these *** our review,we highlight emerging options for patients with neurologic orphan diseases,specifically including diseases resulting in muscular deterioration,epilepsy,seizures,neurodegenerative movement disorders,inhibited cognitive development,neuron deterioration,and *** extensive literature review,gene therapy offers a promising route for the treatment of neurologic orphan *** use of clustered regularly interspaced palindromic repeats/Cas9 has demonstrated positive results in experiments investigating its role in several ***,the use of adeno-associated viral vectors has shown improvement in survival,motor function,and developmental milestones,while also demonstrating reversal of sensory ataxia and cardiomyopathy in Friedreich ataxia *** oligonucleotides have also been used in some neurologic orphan diseases with positive *** target of rapamycin inhibitors are currently being investigated and have reduced abnormal cell growth,proliferation,and *** innovations and the role of genetic treatments open a new window of opportunity for the treatment of neurologic orphan diseases.

Prevalence and associations of non-retinopathy ocular conditions among older Australians with self-reported diabetes:The National Eye Health Survey

AIM:To determine the prevalence and associations of non-retinopathy ocular conditions among older Australian adults with ***:Multistage random-cluster sampling was used to select 3098 non-indigenous Australians aged 50 y or older(46.4%male)and 1738 indigenous Australians aged 40 y or older(41.1%male)from all levels of geographic remoteness in *** underwent a standardised questionnaire to ascertain diabetes history,and a clinical examination to identify eye *** determined the prevalence of uncorrected refractive error,visually significant cataract,cataract surgery,age-related macular degeneration,glaucoma,ocular hypertension,retinal vein occlusion and epiretinal membrane among those with and without self-reported ***:Participants with self-reported diabetes had a higher prevalence of cataract surgery than those without diabetes(28.8%vs 16.9%,OR 1.78,95%CI:1.35-2.34 among non-indigenous Australians,and 11.3%vs 5.2%,OR 1.62,95%CI:1.22-2.14 among indigenous Australians).Diabetic retinopathy(DR)increased the odds of cataract surgery among self-reported diabetic indigenous and nonindigenous Australians(OR 1.89,P=0.004 and OR 2.33,P<0.001 respectively).Having diabetes for≥20 y and having vision-threatening DR increased the odds of cataract surgery among indigenous Australians with diabetes(OR 3.73,P=0.001 and 7.58,P<0.001,respectively).CONCLUSION:Most non-retinopathy ocular conditions are not associated with self-reported ***,to account for Australia’s worsening diabetes epidemic,interventions to reduce the impact of diabetes-related blindness should include increased cataract surgery services.

A method is proposed to improve the accuracy of remaining useful life prediction for rolling element bearings,based on a state space model(SSM)with different degradation stages and a particle *** model is improved by a method based on the Paris formula and the foreman formula allowing the establishment of different degradation *** remaining useful life of rolling element bearings can be predicted by the adjusted model with inputs of physical data and operating status *** late operating trend is predicted by the use of the particle filter *** rolling bearing full life experimental data validate the proposed ***,the prediction result is compared with the single SSM and the Gamma model,and the results indicate that the predicted accuracy of the proposed method is higher with better practicability.

【Background】 Under global chemical management schemes,the potential hazards of new chemicals must be *** an assessment can entail animal testing or,when justified,non-animal testing and alternative approaches,including read across and QSAR.【Objective】 To meet regulatory requirements and to achieve the principles of the Refinement,Reduction and Replacement of laboratory animals（3Rs）,a Weight of Evidence（WoE）approach was taken to assess the potential developmental hazards of a C30 branched alkane substance.[Materials and methods]Using a basic toxicity dataset on the substance,a category was defined allowing for the interpolative read across to existing developmental toxicity data on *** this category,cross-species comparative toxicokinetics and systemic toxicity was ***,a QSAR model was developed from the publicly available results of ＞300 developmental toxicity studies conducted in multiple species to estimate the result for a study conducted in a rabbit,which was then compared to quantitative exposure estimates to determine potential risk.【Results】 Within this category,the potential developmental hazards in rats were determined to be very low based on interpolative read ***,assessment of the chemical properties,along with systemic toxicity and toxicokinetics data from category members in multiple species led to the hypothesis that the potential developmental toxicity hazards were likely to be consistent between rats and other species,including rabbits and *** QSAR model data supported this ***,integrating the newly-created and externally validated QSAR model results with quantitative exposure estimates,we determined that there was minimal risk to the developing fetus and therefore a study in a second species was not considered necessary.【Conclusion】 Considering the full Weight of the Evidence,we therefore concluded that the potential hazards of the C30 alkane are sufficiently characterized,there is m

脊髓刺激(SCS)广泛用于临床治疗周围血管病,可改善患肢血液循环,缓解缺血性疼痛,提高患肢活动能力和存活率以及患者生活质量。SCS引起外周血管扩张改善血液循环的机制仍不完全清楚。一般认为SCS可降低交感神经的传出活动,通过神经节后神经元的突触后膜上肾上腺素能受体的作用,产生外周的血管扩张及血流增加。近年来,我们实验室研究发现一种新的机制:SCS逆行性激活了外周传入神经纤维,其末梢释放扩血管递质,继而导致外周血流增加。SCS可激活含有ERK、AKT和其他的细胞信号转导分子的脊髓神经元。随后,逆行激活含有TRPV1的感觉神经传入纤维(细的有髓纤维和无髓C纤维),逆行传出冲动从脊髓刺激节段传至外周神经末梢,并产生CGRP和NO等其他的扩血管递质。进而作用血管内皮细胞和血管平滑肌,产生血管扩张效应。在正常情况下,SCS交感神经抑制和逆向性传出的两种机制共存互补。双重机制的优势发挥可能与交感神经基础紧张性和状态相关。这些新认识,对临床SCS适应症遴选和疗效监测和预后有重要指导意义。

Corrective surgery for traumatic vertebral artery occlusion

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Traumatic occlusion of the vertebral artery occurs in up to 19.7% of patients with cervical spine injury. While ischemic stroke has been associated with this injury, data are lacking regarding the risk of ischemic stroke in the setting of traumatic vertebral artery (VA) occlusion with an operative spine injury. This study analyzed risk factors associated with ischemic stroke in patients with blunt traumatic VA *** This retrospective study included 52 patients with VA occlusion due to high energy blunt trauma. All injuries were assessed with thin-slice CT, with or without MRI. Management of the cervical spine injury was determined by the spine surgery staff. All subjects were treated with daily aspirin at 325 mg per day unless *** Of the 52 patients, 10 suffered an ischemic stroke attributable to the VA occlusion, with seven of the strokes symptomatic and two resulting in death. Those who sustained strokes were significantly older (P=0.042) and had a lower rate of spine surgery (10% with stroke, and 61% without stroke,P<0.05). Multivariate logistic regression demonstrated fewer ischemic strokes in patients treated with spine surgery (P=0.014). Increasing age and bilateral VA injury were associated with increased risk of ischemic stroke (P=0.065 andP=0.084, respectively).CONCLUSION This study of patients with traumatic vertebral artery occlusion found a high risk of ischemic stroke, with an increased risk among patients with advanced age and a decreased risk among those undergoing cervical spine surgery.
