Emerging contaminants: Evaluation of degradable chelators towards enhancing cadmium phytoextraction efficiency of bioenergy crop grown on polluted soil

Exogenous application of chelators towards enhancing heavy metals extraction efficiency of bioenergy crop has received considerable attention in recent ***,little is known about optimal application rate,comparative evaluation of degradable versus non-degradable chelators and their impact on cadmium(Cd)speciation and uptake,physiological and biochemical activity of sweet sorghum grown under Cd *** chelators namely,Nitrilotriacetic acid(NTA),tetrasodium N,N-diacetate(TDA),Ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid(EDTA),iminodisuccinic acid(IDA)and control(CK)were applied and compared at rates of 2,5,and 10 mmol kg^(-1) towards augmenting phytoextraction efficiency of sweet sorghum for Cd remediation in a screen house *** showed that sweet sorghum augmented with TDA significantly(Pbiomass,enhanced Cd uptake and accumulation when compared to EDTA at application rate of 2-5 mmol kg*** influenced Cd speciation via increasing acid-soluble,reducible,oxidizable,and residual fractions of Cd,thus increasing Cd *** and TDA increased proline concentrations,antioxidant enzymes and net photosynthetic activity rate(Pn)comparably to EDTA in sweet sorghum,thus enhancing stress tolerance and stabilizing photosynthetic ***,exogenous application of degradable TDA at 2-5 mmol kg^(-1) could be recommended as replacement for non-degradable EDTA in a chelate assisted approach towards augmenting bioenergy crop for phytoremediation of Cd polluted soil.

Differential inhibitory potentials of three plant extracts against Dermestes maculatus Degeer and microorganisms in smoked catfish, Clarias gariepinus burchell

Objectives:Three medicinal plants:Zingiber officinale rhizome,Allium sativum bulb,and Moringa oleifera seeds,were evaluated for progeny inhibition in fish beetle,Dermestes maculatus,and incidence of bacteria and fungi in smoked-dried Clarias *** and Methods:Cleaned *** were separately soaked in extracts of these selected plants(50 g/1000 ml)for 60 min before smoke-drying in a mud kiln at 105℃ and later divided into *** evaluation was conducted on uninfested fishes in lot A while fishes in lot b was artificially infested with five pairs of newly emerged adult *** for 10 *** of emerged larva,adult insects,and incidence of microorganisms before and following 90 days in storage after infestation were used as indices of potency of the ***:Results obtained showed that all the treated uninfested smoked-dried *** retained high scores for taste,texture,aroma,and appearance within the first 5 weeks of storage after smoking when compared with the *** implied that the tested extracts had no negative effect in terms of sensory attributes on the treated fish during storage and can therefore be used for fish ***,*** among all the selected extracts had the least number of larvae(17.67±1.45),adult(21.00±1.53),fungi(9.00×10^(2)±0.53 sfu/ml)and bacteria counts(11.33×10^(2)±0.33 cfu/ml)following 90 days in storage after ***:Allium sativum among the tested extracts proved to be most effective and could be recommended for control of *** and microorganisms in smoked ***.

Objective:To assess the neuroprotective effects of aqueous extract of Garcinia kola on neurotoxin administered malnourished mice adopting histological ***:The study was carried out using thirty-two adult malnourished mice which were randomly assigned into four groups(n=8):A,b,C and *** A served as control,while the other groups served as the experimental *** in group A were fed malnourished diet ad libitum and given water *** in group b were administered with 3-Nitropropionic acid(3-NP)(neurotoxin)only at 20 rag/kg body weight,group C were given only Garcinia kola extracts,and group D were pre-treated with Garcinia kola extracts at 200 mg/kg for seven days prior to administration of neurotoxin at 20 mg/kg body *** three days of neurotoxins administration in the relevant groups,the brains were excised and fixed in formal calcium for histological ***:The study showed that hippocampal and cerebellar neurons of animals in group b exhibited some cellular degeneration and blood vessel blockage,which were not seen in groups A,C and *** violet staining was least intense in group b than in groups A,C and *** the fact that animals in group D has equal administration of 3-Nitropropionic acid concentration,there were no traces of neural degeneration as it was evidenced in group ***:It is concluded that Garcinia kola has protective effects on the neurons of the hippocampus and cerebellum of malnourished mice.

The development of aquaculture in Nigeria is constrained by the inadequate supply of high quality of fingerlings of African catfish(Clarias gariepinus).There are conflicting reports on the reproductive efficacy of Vernonia amygdalina when compared with the synthetic hormone Ovaprim(OV)and Pituitary Extract(PE)on *** histopathology of select organs in catfish treated with generic Ovaprim(OV),Pituitary Extract(CPE),and aqueous extract of Vernonia amygdalina(VAE)were *** female ***(average weight of 1 kg)wereevenly and randomly distributed to four *** in groups A,b,C,and D were injected intramuscularly with aqueous solutions of OV(0.5 mL/kg),PE(5 mg/kg),VAE(10 mg/kg),and distilled water(DW;0.5 ml),*** examinations of the ovary,liver,kidney,and spleen were carried *** revealed that OV-and PE-treated groups showed synchronous and synchronous ovarian development,vacuolar change of hepatocytes,thinning of hepatic cords,reduced renal haemopoietic compartments,tubular degeneration and necrosis,and decrease in splenic periarteriolar lymphoid sheaths(PALS).VAE-treated groups had asynchronous ovarian development with atretic ovarian follicles,widespread vacuolar change of hepatocytes,intact renal tubular and hemopoietic compartments,and preponderance of large and coalescing splenic *** conclude that VAE is an ineffective spawning agent,especially when compared with OV and PE,as VAE could not induce synchronous gonadal ***,VAE may have immunopotentiating,nephroprotective,and haemopoietic properties.

Corrosion behaviour of Heat Treated Rolled Medium Carbon Steel in Marine Environment

Investigation were carried out to study the corrosion behaviour of heat treated rolled medium carbon steel and as-rolled medium carbon steel in sodium chloride medium. The as-rolled medium carbon steel was heated to a temperature of 830℃ to completely austenize it and water quenched;it was reheated to the ferrite-austenite dual phase region at a temperature of 745℃ below the effective Ac3 point. The steel was then rapidly quenched in water and tempered at a temperature of 480℃. The corrosion behaviour of the steel in marine medium (NaCl) was studied by weight loss measurement. The weight loss is between 0.02g-0.11g for the as-rolled steel and 0.01g – 0.013g for the heat treated steel. The results obtained showed that the as-rolled medium carbon steel is more susceptible to corrosion than the heat treated rolled medium carbon steel.

bancroftiasis among the mumuye of Northeastern Nigeria: Parasitological and clinical studies in Northern Taraba State

The study reports the prevalence of bancroftiasis in three Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Taraba State, Nigeria. Night blood samples collected from one thousand and thirty one individuals were stained with haematoxylin and examined microscopically for the presence of Wu-chereria bancrofti. The overall prevalence of infection in the study area was high (21.2%) but mean microfilaria densities were generally low. Statistically, prevalence rate differed significantly (χ2d.f.2 = 10.498;P χ2d.f.1 = 1.385;P > 0.05) between sexes. Infection also did not statistically differ between age groups (χ2d.f.5 = 13.219;P > 0.05) even though infection rate increased steadily with age and reaching a peak at the 40 - 49 year age group. Lymphoe-dema was the commonest (M = 12.4%, F = 19.2%) clinical manifestation of bancroftian morbidity encountered in the survey. Overall, the findings indicate that bancroftian filariasis is a public health problem in Taraba state and there is an urgent need to establish an elimination programme with a view of halting transmission in the area.

Influence of Non-Natural Ageing Temperature on the Microstructural Characteristics and Mechanical Properties of Cast Aluminum 6063 Alloy

This research considered the effect of non-natural aging on the microstructural characteristics and mechanical properties of as-cast aluminum 6063 alloys. The samples were developed through a sand casting process and machined into tensile and impact test samples before carrying out solution heat treatment at 550?C (0.83 Tb>mb>) on two parts of the samples while retaining one part as the control. The two parts were further divided into sets denoted A and b and were aged at 180?C (0.27 Tb>mb>) and 160?C (0.24 Tb>mb>), respectively, for 12 hours. The results showed that sample A has the optimal yield strength and ultimate tensile strength of 192 and 206 MPa, respectively. Likewise, the sample gave the highest impact strength value of about 9.63 J/mm2. The observed results were supported by the optical micrograph, which revealed that the sample has evenly dispersed precipitates in its microstructure. This is deemed responsible for the observed increase in strength of the sample.

Nutrient Composition of Cereal （Maize）, Legume （Soybean） and Fruit （banana） as a Complementary Food for Older Infants and Their Sensory Assessment

Four complementary foods were prepared from local foodstuffs which are maize （Zea mays）, soyabean （Glycine max） and banana （Musa acuminate colla）. Four complementary samples were produced from the proportion of maize/soyabean/banana composite flours as 60%： 30%： 10% （b）, 60%： 25%： 15% （C）, 60%： 20%： 20% （D）, 50%： 30%： 20% （E） and Nestle Cerelac was the control sample （A）. The formulated diets were subjected to nutritional analysis-along with a commonly used proprietary infant cereal （Nestle Cerelac） as control. Standard chemical methods were used to determine the proximate nutrient composition, some micronutrients and anti-nutritional factors. The samples produced have increased nutrients of fibre that enhances digestibility （2.07%-3.11%）, protein and ash contents. The supplementation of up to 20% soybean flour and banana flour recorded the best results in terms of proximate and mineral compositions and compared favourably with the control sample, in terms of sensory evaluation using hedonic method, sample A was most accepted but did not differ significantly from sample D. Therefore, nutritious and acceptable complementary food can be produced from fermented maize, soybean and banana flours. Results of molar ratios of some minerals and anti-nutritional factors in the compounded diets suggest that the anti-nutrients will not pose any serious problem in the usage of the complementary diets. The cost of producing the formulated diets is about N50-N100 （50 cents） per gram cheaper than cerelac. The study has therefore, revealed that with proper selection of local foodstuff, it is possible to prepare nutritious complementary diets that would be acceptable, readily available, affordable and nutritionally adequate.
