Drug Use and Abuse among Orthopedic Ward Patients—A Revolving Cycle of Menace in Atbuth, Bauchi

Background: The use of drugs for purposes other than those for which they are meant to be used or in excess amounts. Psychoactive drugs are some of the drugs more commonly abused, also, antibiotics and other medications too can be misused. Drug abuse and misuse can lead to serious social, medical and emotional harm to the patients, and antibiotic resistance that makes treatment harder are also likely complications. Method: Patients in both male and female wards of the Orthoepaedics Department of ATBUTH, Bauchi were interviewed using a structured questionnaire and their responses were recorded and data were analyzed using the SPSS version 29. Results: A total of 112 patients were interviewed, 76 males and 36 females. Thirty-two (28.6%) patients had taken various kinds of unprescribed medications while on admission: 9 patients had taken unprescribed tramadol, 4 patients had taken codeine, 6 Ampiclox, 5 flagyl and about 8 patients had taken different kinds of traditional medications while on admission. Among the 32 patients, 23 (72%) are aged less than 30 years, 5 (16%) are aged between 30 and 50 years and 4 (12%) are aged above 50 years. Sixteen (50%) had such medications brought to them by relatives or friends, 10 (30%) were given by other patients on admission, 5 (15%) brought or bought the drugs by themselves while 1 (5%) were given by a non-clinical staff of the hospital. Conclusion: Drug misuse and abuse is a very serious, deleterious practice with destructive consequences in its wake, such consequences as drug dependency with all its antecedent effects, antibiotic resistance and difficulties in controlling/managing infections are but a few. So, it’s very important to both educate patients about these terrible practices and cope with the spread of them in our wards and hospitals.

Dear Editor,Gynostemma pentaphyllum(Thunb.)Makino,a perennial climbing vine in the Cucurbitaceae family,has been widely used in traditional medicine for over 600 years(Blumert and Liu,1999).It serves as a valuable natural source of over 200 dammaranetype saponins with notable bioactive properties,including anti-cancer,cardioprotective,hepatoprotective,neuroprotective,and anti-diabetic activities(Li et al.,2016;Nguyen et al.,2021).

TiO2‐mediated photocatalysis is widely used in a variety of applications and products in the envi‐ronmental and energy fields, including photoelectrochemical conversion, self‐cleaning surfaces, and especially water purification systems. The dimensionality of the structure of a TiO2 material can affect its properties, functions, and more specifically, its photocatalytic performance. In this work, the photocatalytic inactivation of Gram‐negative Escherichia coli using three photocatalysts, differ‐ing in their structure and other characteristics, was studied in a batch reactor under UVA light. The aim was to establish the disinfection efficiency of solid TiO2 compared with that of suspended cata‐lysts, widely considered as reference cases for photocatalytic water disinfection. The bacterial inac‐tivation profiles obtained showed that: (1) the photoinactivation was exclusively related to the quantity of photons retained per unit of treated volume, irrespective of the characteristics of the photocatalyst and the emitted light flux densities;(2) across the whole UV light range studied, each of the photocatalytic solids was able to achieve more than 2 log bacterial inactivation with less than 2 h UV irradiation;(3) none of the used catalysts achieved a total bacterial disinfection during the treatment time. For each of the catalysts the quantum yield has been assessed in terms of disinfec‐tion efficiency, the 2D material showed almost the same performance as those of suspended cata‐lysts. This catalyst is promising for supported photocatalysis applications.

Synthesis of activated carbons from black sapote seeds,characterization and application in the elimination of heavy metals and textile dyes

Many different techniques may be used to remove industrial pollutants from wastewater. Adsorption using activated carbon has been reported to be an effective method. This work proposes the use of a vegetable residue(black sapote seeds) as a raw material for its synthesis. These carbons were chemically activated using phosphoric acid and carbonized at 673 and 873 K. Adsorption isotherms were constructed for the textile dyes on the carbons, and this data was treated using Langmuir’s equation to quantitatively describe the adsorption process. The synthesized carbons were characterized using FTIR, EA, SEM, Nitrogen adsorption(specific surface areas of 879 and 652 m2·g-1), and their points of zero charge(2.1 and 2.3). It was possible to adsorb both heavy metals and textile dyes present in aqueous solutions and wastewaters using these activated carbons. Heavy metals were adsorbed almost completely by both carbons. Cationic dyes where adsorbed(58–59.8 mg·g-1) in greater amounts compared to anionic dyes(10–58.8 mg·g-1). The amount of anionic dyes adsorbed increased almost 30% by changing the pH of the solutions. One of the carbons was thermally regenerated on three occasions without losing its adsorption capacity and it was proved in a flow system.

失能老年人的照料需求:未满足程度及其差异

我国居家社区养老服务供给缺乏相匹配的需求满足度信息。文章采用2014年中国老年人健康长寿影响因素调查数据,计算中国居家失能老人的比例与规模及其照料需求满足程度,并进一步按社会人口特征、失能程度、城乡以及地区比较失能老人中存在完全满足、部分未满足以及完全未满足的需求的比例差异。研究发现:我国有9%的居家老人失能,相当于老年人口数1200多万;41%的居家失能老人已有家人照料且完全满足其需求,54%存在部分未满足的需求,4%的居家失能老人的照料需求完全未得到满足;中/重度失能、生活来源不够用、西部以及城镇的失能老人的部分未满足的需求凸显;轻度失能、中低龄、上过学、独居、中部以及农村的失能老人是存在完全未满足需求的高风险人群。研究建议,居家社区养老服务应聚焦具有完全或部分未满足需求的居家失能老人,并且由政府优先保障需求完全未被满足的高风险人群。

A Kinematics Scalar Projection Method (KSP) for Incompressible Flows with Variable Density

A new scalar projection method presented for simulating incompressible flows with variable density is proposed. It reverses conventional projection algorithm by computing first the irrotational component of the velocity and then the pressure. The first phase of the projection is purely kinematics. The predicted velocity field is subjected to a discrete Hodge-Helmholtz decomposition. The second phase of upgrade of pressure from the density uses Stokes’ theorem to explicitly compute the pressure. If all or part of the boundary conditions is then fixed on the divergence free physical field, the system required to be solved for the scalar potential of velocity becomes a Poisson equation with constant coefficients fitted with Dirichlet conditions.

Improvement of the Viscous Penalty Method for Particle-Resolved Simulations

A numerical study of the parameters controlling the viscous penalty method is investigated to better set up Particle-Resolved Direct Numerical Simulations (PR-DNS) of particulate flows. Based on this analysis, improvements of the methods are proposed in order to reach an almost second order convergence in space. The viscous penalty method is validated in Stokes regime by simulating a uniform flow past a fixed isolated cylinder. Moreover, it is also utilized in moderate Reynolds number regime for a uniform flow past a square configuration of cylinder and compared in terms of friction factor to the well-known Ergun correlation.
