In this work,we study a predator-prey model of Gause type,in which the prey growth rate is subject to an Allee effect and the action of the predator over the prey is determined by a generalized hyperbolic-type functional response,which is neither differentiable nor locally Lipschitz at the predator *** kind of functional response is an extension of the so-called square root functional response,used to model systems in which the prey have a strong herd *** study the behavior of the solutions in the first quadrant and the existence of limit *** prove that,for a wide choice of parameters,the solutions arrive at the predator axis in finite *** also characterize the existence of an equilibrium point and,when it exists,we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for it to be a center-type *** fact,we show that the set of parameters that yield a center-type equilibrium,is the graph of a function with an open *** also prove that any center-type equilibrium is stable and it always possesses a supercritical Hopf *** particular,we guarantee the existence of a unique limit cycle,for small perturbations of the system.

The standard approach to organ preservation in liver transplantation is by static cold storage and the time between the cross-clamping of a graft in a donor and its reperfusion in the recipient is defined as cold ischemia time(CIT).This simple definition reveals a multifactorial time frame that depends on donor hepatectomy time,transit time,and recipient surgery time,and is one of the most important donor-related risk factors which may influence the graft and recipient’s ***,the growing demand for the use of marginal liver grafts has prompted scientific exploration to analyze ischemia time factors and develop different organ preservation *** review details the CIT definition and analyzes its different *** also explores the most recent strategies developed to implement each timestamp of CIT and to protect the graft from ischemic injury.

Despite the progress has been reached with Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) research, there are gaps in the knowledge of viral induced oncogenesis. The aim of the present study was to identify possible associations between HHV-8 subtypes, HHV-8 loads and clinical manifestations of HIV infected patients diagnosed with different malignancies associated with HHV-8 infection. Forty six HIV-1 infected individuals diagnosed with different HHV-8 associated diseases were studied [37 epidemic Kaposi’s sarcoma (KS), 3 pleural effusion lymphoma (PEL);5 peripheral lymphadenopathies (PL);1 Hodgkin’s lymphoma (HL);1 non Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL)]. HHV-8 loads were determined by quantitative real time PCR (qRT-PCR) whilst HHV-8 subtypes were determined by open-reading frame (ORF)-K1 gen genotyping. HHV-8 subtypes B, A, C, A5 and E were exhibited by 31.8%, 23.4%, 19.1%, 17% and 8.5% of the studied patients, respectively. The median HHV-8 viral load did not differ between subtypes (p > 0.05) but HHV-8 viral loads were significantly higher in PEL than in epidemic KS lesion or lymph nodes (p = 0.04). Subtype B was detected in 60% of patients with B cell lymphoma (NHL, PEL and HL) whereas subtype E was only detected in patients with epidemic KS diagnosis. Our data suggest that HHV-8 DNA quantification instead of subtype identification could be used as a surrogate marker for monitoring its infection, not only in epidemic KS patients but also in HIV infected individuals with lymphoproliferative disorders.

The search for diagnostic and prognostic markers in Alzheimer's disease(AD) has been an area of active research in the last decades. Biochemical markers are correlates of intracerebral changes that can be identified in biological fluids, namely: peripheral blood(total blood, red and white blood cells, platelets, plasma and serum), saliva, urine and cerebrospinal fluid. An important feature of a biomarker is that it can be measured objectively and evaluated as(1) an indicator of disease mechanisms(markers of core pathogenic processes or the expression of downstream effects of these processes), or(2) biochemical responses to pharmacological or therapeutic intervention, which can be indicative of disease modification. Platelets have been used in neuropharmacological models since the mid-fifties, as they share several homeostatic functions with neurons, such as accumulation and release of neurotransmitters, responsiveness to variations in calcium concentration, and expression of membrane-bound compounds. Recent studies have shown that platelets also express several components related to the pathogenesis of AD,in particular to the amyloid cascade and the regulation of oxidative stress: thus they can be used in the search for biomarkers of the disease process. For instance, platelets are the most important source of circulating forms of the amyloid precursor protein and other important proteins such as Tau and glycogen synthase kinase-3B. Moreover, platelets express enzymes involved in membrane homeostasis(e.g., phospholipase A2), and markers of the inflammatory process and oxidative stress. In this review we summarize the available literature and discuss evidence concerning the potential use of platelet markers in AD.

Selecting Oil Wells for Hydraulic Fracturing: A Comparison between Genetic-Fuzzy and Neuro Fuzzy Systems

Hydraulic fracturing is widely used to increase oil well production and to reduce formation damage. Reservoir studies and engineering analyses are carried out to select the wells for this kind of operation. As the reservoir parameters have some diffuse characteristics, Fuzzy Inference Systems (FIS) have been tested for these selection processes in the last few years. This paper compares the performance of a neuro fuzzy system and a genetic fuzzy system used for selecting wells for hydraulic fracturing, with knowledge acquired from an operational data base to set the SIF membership functions. The training data and the validation data used were the same for both systems. We concluded that, despite the genetic fuzzy system being a newer process, it obtained better results than the neuro fuzzy system. Another conclusion was that, as the genetic fuzzy system can work with constraints, the membership functions setting kept the consistency of variable linguistic values.

Unsupervised Methods to Classify Real Data from Offshore Wells

In the petroleum industry, sensor data and information are valuable. It can detect, predict and help to understand processes during oil production. Offshore wells require more attention. Once workovers, maintenance, and intervention are more costly than onshore wells. Coupling data-driven methods for well-monitoring applications, two unsupervised classification methods, one statistical and one machine learning-based, are proposed to detect anomalies in well data. The novelty is presented by applying a Control Chart using a 3 standard deviations window for the Permanent Downhole Gauge Pressure sensor (P-PDG), and a Fuzzy C-means algorithm to classify data from pressure and temperature sensors in an offshore field. The main goal in structuring a classified data set is using it to train machine learning models to monitor and manage petroleum production. Modeling applications for early fault detection systems in offshore production, based on real-time data from production sensors, require classified data sets. Then, labeling two target classes: “normal” and “fault” is a key step to be implemented in order to train the machine learning models. Therefore, this paper applies two methodologies to classify a real-time data set to create a training data set divided into “normal” and “fault” classes. Thus, it is possible to visualize the abnormal events pointed out by the methodologies and compare how sensible is each method. Freshwater biota are more comprehensive and direct indicators of biological impacts,and more meaningful to the public than water quality or physical habitat *** biotic data and the multiple biological indicators developed from them offer a much richer array of data for assessing the impacts of pollution controls than a limited set of physical or chemical *** recent decades,assemblage-based assessments by ecologists,environmental scientists,and water quality agencies have been employed globally for determining the condition of,and threats to,freshwater ecosystems.A key step in this advance has been the development of multimetric indices(MMIs)or indices of biotic integrity(IBIs)based on quantitative assessments of algae,macrophyte,macroinvertebrate,fish or riparian bird *** Europe,where biological assemblages are mandated for assessing freshwater ecosystem health,many indices are ***,the proliferation of MMIs globally has not always occurred through the application of rigorous study designs and monitoring protocols,nor have they always effectively incorporated functional metrics,stressor assessments,and statistical ***,in this review,we discuss eleven major concerns with the development and application(including logistical limitations)of multimetric indicators based on freshwater biota to encourage more rigorous and widely applicable(transferable)MMI use and ***,our concerns focus on reference conditions;sampling effort,methods,and season;trophic guild definition;metric comprehensiveness,options,screening and scoring;and MMI *** could also benefit from increased attention to ecological mechanisms and metric development,to further improve our understanding of anthropogenic impacts as well as rehabilitation effects on freshwater ecosystems *** closer attention to study designs,ecological mechanisms and metric development should further improve our understa

Influence of the Trajectory of the Abrasive Pin on the Grinding Process of Glassy Ceramics

This study addresses the effect of the radius along which abrasive particles scratch the surface on the removal rate during the polishing process of two different commercial glassy materials: a float glass and a porcelain stoneware tile. In both case a cylindrical pin containing particles of aluminium oxide was used as abrasive and abundant tap water was used lubricant. An epitrochoid curve was selected to be performed by the abrasive pin. Along the trajectory the scratching radius has continuously varied from 33 up to 46 cm in a periodic fashion. The occurrence of scratches having a particular scratching radius could be quantitatively estimated with the aid of computational simulations, which were in turn based on the kinematic parameters adopted for the polishing process. A very similar pattern was attained between the measured profiles of removal depth measured by profilometry and the simulated profiles of cumulative number of abrasive contacts, and this similarity was evaluated considering the damaged area close to the scratching edges.
