Background: Cardiac involvement and the consequences of inflammation induced by SARS-CoV2 infection could have catastrophic long-term consequences. Left ventricular mechanics could identify a specific pattern of myocardial fiber damage in patients infected with COVID-19. To our knowledge there are no publications referring to the global description of ventricular mechanics in patients with COVID-19. Objective: To describe left ventricular mechanics in hospitalized patients with COVID-19. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we included 40 hospitalized patients with confirmed diagnostic of COVID-19, from April 11, 2020, to September 6, 2020. Demographic and laboratory data, clinical and echocardiographic characteristics were collected, as well as events during hospitalization. Left ventricular deformation was analyzed and reported. Results: Subclinical dysfunction was observed in 82.5% (left ventricular longitudinal strain [LVGLS] -17.05% and global circumferential strain [GCS] -18.6%) of the patients, likewise, the mean twist and apical rotation were preserved, and even increased as part of the compensating mechanism to maintain the ejection fraction. Conclusion: In patients hospitalized with COVID-19, despite having a normal left ventricular ejection fraction, subclinical myocardial damage was found, manifested by a decrease in Global Longitudinal Strain (GLS) and Global Circumferential Strain (GCS). This behavior is similar to that of cardiomyopathies in the early stage of the disease, and given the pathophysiological mechanisms involved in the disease, its long-term consequences should be monitored and evaluated.

Origami Fiction： Psychological Horror in Interactive Narrative

One of the most relevant elements in contemporary narrative systems is the atmosphere creation. Even when talking about new digital media, interactive narratives can still be supported by strategies used by former media like cinema and television; namely, character design as well as the setting bonded to architectural space design. These elements are offered to the players through graphic representations that are intended to convey not only an uncanny atmosphere but also an aesthetic experience for psychological horror narratives in videogames. With narrative proposals close to interactive movies, titles like Heavy Rain manage to create a gloomy mood by using basic elements of style such as form, composition, and light, and also open the opportunity to get emotionally involved with the characters through everyday life choices. Even though Heavy Rain is not considered as an action videogame, its narrative audiovisual system is fully able to create enough tension and suspense in order to offer a quite intense aesthetic experience. However, most of its narrative resources are taken from cinema and television audiovisual strategies to tell stories and to hook the audience. Therefore, the study of former narrative systems both as language and human thought and psyche, could allow designers to create more effective interactive narratives for contemporary audiences.

The effect of chronic administration of the sigma agonist: 1,3-di-o-tolyl-guanidine (DTG), in neonatal ventral hippocampal lesioned (nVHL) rats, on the immobility by clamping and dorsal immobility, were investigated. The nVHL increases the duration of immobility by clamping, but does not affect the duration of the dorsal immobility. We found that DTG augments the duration of the dorsal immobility in the unlesioned rats, but does not modify the duration of immobility induced by clamping the neck. DTG also counteracts the increase in the duration of the immobility by clamping produced by nVHL. However, the increase in the duration of the dorsal immobility produced by DTG is counteracted by nVHL. These results are discussed with respect to the differential effect on the two immobility responses tested, suggesting that they are different forms of immobility mediated by different mechanisms although they behaviorally share common characteristics.

Frequency and severity of OSAHS in Mexican adolescents. The role of BMI and neck circumference

Background: Overweight and obesity are major public-health issues in Mexico. Sleep breathing disorders directly impact the health of affected subjects. The aim of this study was to describe the frequency and severity of obstructive sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) in Mexican adolescents grouped by weight status. Secondary objectives were to describe the influence of body mass index (BMI) and neck circumference (NC) as predictive factors of OSAH. Method: Somatometric, demographic data and full-night polysomnography were done. Linear and logistic regression models described the relationship between BMI and NC with OSAHS presence and severity. Receiver-Operating-Characteristics (ROC) curves showed different sensitivity and specificity performances of BMI and NC cutoff-values. Results: OSAHS frequency and severity were significantly greater in obese and extremely-obese adolescents (8% vs 22% vs 67%;p < 0.001). Linear regression showed an AHI increase of 0.940 events/hour for every centimeter-increase in NC and 0.696 events/hour for every1 kg/m2-increase in BMI. Logistic-regression showed extreme-obesity as the main risk factor (OR 9.9) for diagnosis of OSAHS. ROC curves showed an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.83 for BMI defined cutoff-values, and of 0.80 for BMI percentile-for-age cutoff-values. The AUC of NC ROC curve was 0.8043. Conclusion: This is the largest study made on Latin-American population evaluating the frequency and severity of OSAHS with full-night polysomnography. We showed that obese and extremely-obese Mexican-adolescents are at highest risk for OSAHS. Increasing BMI and NC showed positive correlation with AHI. Different BMI cut-off values showed similar diagnostic performance. Extreme-obesity increases 8 times the risk association for OSAHS.

AIM To determine a potential relationship between serum undercarboxylated(uc OC) concentration and cardiovascular risk factors in type 2 diabetes(T2D) patients and healthy subjects(HS).METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted on 140 subjects classified into two groups, 70 with T2D and 70 HS. Medical history and physical examination with anthropometric measurements were obtained from all subjects. Body fat percentage was determined by bioelectrical impendency analysis. Serum uc OC concentration was determined by enzyme immunoassay,while serum levels of insulin and hsC RP were obtained using high sensitivity enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Insulin resistance was determined using the homeostasis model assessment-IR. Lipid profile [triglycerides,total cholesterol(TC), high-density lipoproteins(HDL-c),low density lipoproteins(LDL-c), very low-density lipoproteins] was determined by spectrophotometry and standard formulas when applicable. RESULTS The T2D patient group showed significantly higher values of waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio, systolic blood pressure(SBP), diastolic blood pressure(DBP),current smoking, and alcohol use when compared to the HS group(P < 0.05). We observed a significantly lower serum ucO C concentration in T2D than in HS(1.5 ± 1.4vs 2.3 ± 1.8, P < 0.05). In the whole study population,ucO C concentration was inversely correlated with body mass index(BMI)(r =-0.236, P < 0.05), fasting plasma glucose(r =-0.283, P < 0.01) and HDL-c(r =-0.255,P < 0.05); and positively correlated with LDL-c/HDL-c ratio(r = 0.306, P < 0.05) and TC/HDL-c ratio(r =0.284, P < 0.05). In the T2D group, serum uc OC concentration was inversely correlated with BMI(r =-0.310, P < 0.05) and body-fat percentage(r =-0.311,P < 0.05), and positively correlated with DBP(r = 0.450,P < 0.01). Arsenic Removal from Zimapan Contaminated Water Monitored by the Tyndall Effect

In Zimapan Valley, Mexico, up to 1.1 mg·L-1 of arsenic concentrations have been detected in deep wells that are used as drinking water supply for almost 39,000 people, which could have been exposed to levels higher than 10 μg·L-1 of arsenic, the maximum level recommended by the World Health Organization. Chronic consumption of water contaminated with arsenic can cause several diseases, including cancer. For it, the implementation of practical and economical methods to remove arsenic from drinking water is crucial to protect the population health. In this work, an electrochemical method to remove arsenic from drinking water is described. The process, monitored by Tyndall effect, utilizes Cu2+ and Zn2+ ions from a brass electrode in an electrochemical cell with water as electrolyte. Results show that the EC process reduces the concentration of the arsenic diluted in Zimapan water to a level below the limit of detection of the atomic absorption spectrophotometer employed. Arsenic was removed through the formation of Cu and Zn arsenic compounds. Cu2+ and Zn2+ ions form a hydroxide and eventually polycrystalline precipitation of kottigite and cornubite complexes (identified by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction), which are then filtered to eliminate the precipitated arsenic compounds.
