Survival after resection of colorectal liver metastases in octogenarians and sexagenarians compared to their respective age-matched national population

Background: The aim of the current study was to investigate survival after resection of colorectal liver metastases (CLM) in octogenarians. The survival of octogenarian patients was compared to the survival of the national population of octogenarians and the survival of sexagenarians, the latter representing the average-age patient undergoing resection of CLM. Methods: Octogenarian and sexagenarian were defined as person 80–89 and 60–69 years of age, respectively. Survival analyses of patients who underwent resection of CLM between 2002 and 2014 were performed. Data from Statistics Norway were used to estimate the survival of the age-matched national population of octogenarians (ageM-Octo) and the age-matched national population of sexagenarians (ageM-Sexa). Results: During the study period, 59 octogenarians underwent resection of CLM. The majority of patients underwent a minor liver resection (n=50). In octogenarians, the 5-year survival was 32.5% and 66.3%[difference, 33.8 percentage points (pp)] in patients and ageM-Octo, respectively. The 10-year survival was 14.1% and 31.2% (difference, 17.1 pp) in patients and ageM-Octo, respectively. In sexagenarians, the 5-year survival was 50.9% and 96.2% (difference, 45.3 pp) in patients and ageM-Sexa, respectively. The 10-year survival was 35.7% and 90.3% (difference, 54.6 pp) in patients and ageM-Sexa, respectively. The 5-year cancer-specific survival and 5-year recurrence-free survival (RFS) after resection of CLM in octogenarians were 43.1% and 32.9%, respectively. Conclusions: After resection of CLM, the survival was poorer in octogenarians than in sexagenarians. However, the difference between the survival curves of patients and their age-matched population was smaller in octogenarians. In practice, this finding may indicate a greater benefit of resection in the elderly than the survival rates alone would suggest.

Three high order shock-capturing schemes are compared for large eddy simulations(LES)of temporally evolving mixing layers for different convective Mach numbers ranging from the quasi-incompressible regime to highly compressible supersonic *** considered high order schemes are fifth-order WENO(WENO5),seventh-order WENO(WENO7)and the associated eighth-order central spatial base scheme with the dissipative portion of WENO7 as a nonlinear post-processing filter step(WENO7fi).This high order nonlinear filter method of Yee&Sjogreen is designed for accurate and efficient simulations of shock-free compressible turbulence,turbulence with shocklets and turbulence with strong shocks with minimum tuning of scheme *** LES results by WENO7fi using the same scheme parameter agree well with experimental results compiled by Barone et al.,and published direct numerical simulations(DNS)work of Rogers&Moser and Pantano&Sarkar,whereas results by WENO5 andWENO7 compare poorly with experimental data and DNS computations.

Advanced gastric cancer （GC） has been recognized as lethal disease when peritoneal metastases （PM） *** is no standard treatment for advanced GC with *** 1980s,the therapeutic arena for these patients had remained stagnant,with no therapeutic approach having shown a survival gain in GC with ***,cytoreductive surgery （CRS） with peritonectomy procedures and intraperitoneal chemotherapy （IPC） promising new combined therapeutic approach to achieve disease control for GC with *** recent publications changed the GC with PM treatment landscape by providing an evidence that CRS and IPC led to prolongation in overall survival （OS）.This review will provide an overview of the evolving role of CRS and IPC in the management of advanced GC with PM in the current era.

Transcriptional coordination, or co-expression, of genes may signify functional relatedness of the corresponding proteins. For example, several genes involved in secondary cell wall cellulose biosynthesis are co-expressed with genes engaged in the synthesis of xylan, which is a major component of the secondary cell wall. To extend these types of analyses, we investigated the co-expression relationships of all Carbohydrate-Active enZYmes （CAZy）-related genes for Arabidopsis thaliana. Thus, the intention was to transcriptionally link different cell wall-related processes to each other, and also to other biological functions. To facilitate easy manual inspection, we have displayed these interactions as networks and matrices, and created a web-based interface （http：***） containing downloadable files for all the transcriptional associations.

Exploratory study on bitumen content determination for foamed bitumen mixes based on porosity and indirect tensile strength

Optimum bitumen content determination is one of the major aims for foamed bitumen mix design. However, mix design procedures for foamed bitumen mixes are still under development. In this paper a method to determine the optimum bitumen content for given foamed bitumen mix based on primary aggregate structure porosity and indirect tensile strength criterion is proposed. Using packing theory concepts, the aggregate gradation is divided into three aggregate structures which are oversize, primary and secondary struc- tures. Porosity for the primary aggregate structure is determined for given bitumen contents. A maximum value for porosity of 50% for the primary aggregate structure is used to choose initial bitumen content. Furthermore, a minimum indirect tensile strength criteria is suggested to refine this bitumen content. This method enables a bitumen content value to be chosen prior to the start of experimental work, as porosity is expressed in terms of physical parameters such as aggregate and binder specific gravity, and aggregate gradation which are known before the mix design process. The bitumen content is then later refined when the indirect tensile strength is determined in the laboratory. This method would reduce resources such as time and materials that may be required during the mix design procedure.
