Watermelon research in Southern Africa, has predominantly observed the clear existence of the sweet watermelon and cow melon forms of watermelon, cultivated on farm and even some occurring in the wild. Molecular characterization of 48 watermelon accessions collected from National Genebank of Zimbabwe using 9 SSR markers generated a total of 49 putative alleles. The average number of alleles detected by each primer was 5.4. Analysis of molecular variance within and among accessions of watermelons revealed that only 39% of the total variation resides between these two groups (cow-melons and sweet watermelons), 24% between accession within groups and 37% within accessions. Multivariate analyses employed provide evidence of the existence of introgression between sweet water melons and cow melons, as reflected by some accessions of cow melons, clustering into a hybridogenous group. Most of watermelon accessions within the hybridogenous group [A (II)] were collected from drier communal areas, while those accessions within the cow melon group [A (I)] are mostly from research centers. The separation of cow melons into distinct groups could be indicative of a possible formation of an isolated evolutionary unit.

Some species of the genus Hypoxis within the Hypoxidaceae family are known to contain phenolic glycosides that have different clinical functions. In the African continent Hypoxis species are regarded as valuable medicinal plants that have been used for decades by traditionalists and natives to treat numerous ailments. The corms and rhizomes of the geophytes contain hypoxoside, a norlignan diglucoside, which is one of the important phytochemicals with medicinal functions found in Hypoxis. In this study corm extracts of seven species: H. acuminata, H. argentea, H. filiformis, H. gerrardii, H. hemerocallidea, H. iridifolia and H. parvifolia were analyzed for the presence of ellagic acid, total phenolic content (TPC) and hypoxoside. Extracts of H. iridifolia and H. gerardii had the highest levels of total phenolic content of 369.6 μg/g and 318.2 μg/g, respectively, compared to the rest of the species. Hypoxoside was found to be present in corm extracts of all the species in varying proportions. H. gerrardii, H. argentea and H. filiformis had the highest relative hypoxoside content of 7.1%, 6.6% and 6.6%, respectively. It is interesting to note that Hypoxis hemerocallidea, the most commonly used species for medicinal extracts contained a much lower level of hypoxoside than most of the other species. Our study included species that have not been previously analyzed for either TPC or hypoxoside presence such as H. filiformis and H. gerrardii, thus providing novel information regarding the medicinal status and biochemical compounds of these Hypoxis species.

Medical research data are often skewed and heteroscedastic. It has therefore become practice to log-transform data in regression analysis, in order to stabilize the variance. Regression analysis on log-transformed data estimates the relative effect, whereas it is often the absolute effect of a predictor that is of interest. We propose a maximum likelihood (ML)-based approach to estimate a linear regression model on log-normal, heteroscedastic data. The new method was evaluated with a large simulation study. Log-normal observations were generated according to the simulation models and parameters were estimated using the new ML method, ordinary least-squares regression (LS) and weighed least-squares regression (WLS). All three methods produced unbiased estimates of parameters and expected response, and ML and WLS yielded smaller standard errors than LS. The approximate normality of the Wald statistic, used for tests of the ML estimates, in most situations produced correct type I error risk. Only ML and WLS produced correct confidence intervals for the estimated expected value. ML had the highest power for tests regarding β1.

Using questionnaire is a common, efficient and cheap way to collect data in population-based epidemiological studies. However, there is a general trend of declining response rates leading to a higher risk for bias affecting the validity of results. Use of anonymous questionnaires and/or other ways of distributions, e.g. via schools instead of postal, may increase response rates, but can also lead to other types of systematic errors. This study indicates that results from cross-sectional questionnaire studies differ depending on distribution method and whether the survey is anonymous or not. Also the official purpose of the survey may affect the outcome. When studying well-known risk-factors and health effects, potential methodological problems like reporting bias must be considered in cross sectional studies.

Novel multivalent design of a monoclonal antibody improves binding strength to soluble aggregates of amyloid beta

In this paper,we estimate the forest biomass growth and potential harvest of forest biomass residues for different climate and management scenarios（Reference,Current,Environment,Production,and Maximum） in north-central Sweden,and the potential reduction of CO2 emission due to fossil fuel *** integrated model-based approach is applied to estimate forest biomass production and substitution,considering the effects of climate change and forest *** results show that the forest biomass residues may increase up to 89% and the potential harvest by 64% in the next 100 years in J?mtland and V?sternorrland *** the potential harvest of biomass residues is used to replace fossil coal the net annual reduction of CO2 equiv emissions could be up to 4.8 Tg in the year 2010,and could increase to 7.8 Tg in 2110 in J?mtland and V?sternorrland *** carbon stock in standing biomass,forest soils and wood products all increase,but the carbon stock changes are less significant than the substitution benefits.
