Through ingestion and subsequent egestion,Arctic seabirds can bioaccumulate microplastics at and around their colony breeding *** microplastics in Arctic seabirds have been well documented,it is not yet understood to what extent these particles can act as transport vehicles for plastic-associated contaminants,including legacy persistent organic pollutants(POPs),trace metals,and organic *** investigated the occurrence and pattern of organic and inorganic co-contaminants of microplastics in two seabird species from the Canadian Arctic-northern fulmar(Fulmarus glacialis)and black-legged kittiwake(Rissa tridactyla).We found that fulmars had higher levels of plastic contamination and emerging organic compounds(known to be plastic additives)than kittiwakes,whereas higher concentrations of legacy POPs were found in kittiwakes than the ***,fulmars,the species with the much larger foraging range(~200 km),had higher plastic pollution and overall contaminant burdens,indicating that birds may be acting as long-range transport vectors for plasticassociated *** results suggest a potential connection between plastic additive contamination and plastic pollution burdens in the bird stomachs,highlighting the importance of treating plastic particles and plastic-associated organic additives as co-contaminants rather than separate pollution issues.

正如人们对高性能混凝土中微裂纹对其耐久性影响方面的认识程度一样,人们至今对低水灰比混凝土内部微裂纹产生原因的认识仍然很浅。可以设想,微裂纹是由于人们要获得高强而通常采用的硅灰所引起的特殊反应特性而导致的。这里,Aachen的RWTH建筑研究所(ibac)开展了有关火山灰活性掺合料早期的反应机理以及活性掺合料对混凝土孔溶液中碱浓度随时间变化的影响。联邦材料研究和测试所(BAM)就硅灰对水泥浆体早期的自收缩、水化动力学和内部组织特性等方面开展的研究,为本项工作进行了必要的补充。

To alert clinicians to a potential novel adverse drug effect of interferonβ 1a,we herein report a patient with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis who developed ulcerative colitis following treatment with interferonβ 1a. Ulcerative colitis persisted despite discontinuation of interferonβ 1a treatment and switching the patient to glatiramer acetate. Tacrolimus (FK506),6-mercaptopurine,and prednisolone were required to induce remission. Both ulcerative colitis and multiple sclerosis were eventually well controlled using this regimen. Our report underscores that caution should be exercised when prescribing immunostimulatory agents in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and challenges current efforts to stimulate innate immunity as a novel therapeutic concept for IBD.

Reports from European university hospitals show an increase in work-related mental strain. Four European university hospitals started a comprehensive research program called Health and Organisation among University hospitals Physicians in Europe-the HOUPE Study in the year 2003. Based on the results from the HOUPE study, the authors conducted an intervention project together with HR-consultants at one of the participating hospitals. A collected cross-sectional survey in 2005 among permanently employed academic physicians (N = 1800, response rate 60%) at Karolinska University Hospital in Sweden. Results from the study were used in survey feedback seminars (N = 250). This method is a way of systematic collection of data to process and give feedback to the organisation"s members in order to initiate organisational change. By providing results based on the total sample, on each division, and unpublished data from each clinic the authors aimed to improve physicians" health and work satisfaction and thereby enhance the health of the physicians. Feedback seminars can arouse many emotions and might make people defensive. The role of resistance in the process of change is a paradox in that resistance slows down change. However, without resistance there will be no change at all. The authors conducted 20 feedback seminars of three hours duration where results were discussed relating mainly to the psychosocial work environment, psychological distress, and career paths, i. e., job demands, control at work, social interactions, leadership, commitment to the organisation, harassment at work, burnout, depression and suicide ideation. Altogether, 250 physicians participated in these meetings. To achieve acceptance for organisational change, data about relevant conditions in the organisation have to be processed in a systematic way in collaboration with all those who will benefit from changes, in concrete work units as divisions and clinics.

Does Photofrin II Combined with a Radio-Adaptive Dose Lead to a Synergistic or Additive Effect after Ionising Irradiation <i>In Vitro</i>?

Background: The radiosensitizing effect of Photofrin II has been demonstrated in vitro and in animal models, even in tumor models known to be highly radioresistant, such as glioblastoma and bladder carcinoma. Radio-adaptive doses are also known to lead to an augmented cell or tissue reaction. The aim of this study was to investigate potential synergistic or additive effects when combining the two methods in vitro for an improved therapeutic concept in bladder cancer. Material and Methods: RT4 human bladder carcinoma cell line and HCV29 human bladder epithelium cells were seeded and incubated with various concentrations of Photofrin II. The cells were additionally irradiated with ionizing radiation (0.05 Gy/2 Gy/0.05 Gy + 2 Gy). Cells without Photofrin II incubation and irradiation served as controls. The cell survival was evaluated. Results: The survival rate of both cell lines, RT4 and HCV29, did not differ significantly when incubated with a non-toxic concentration of Photofrin II and exposed to a pre-irradiation dose of 0.05 Gy prior to the 2 Gy radiation fraction, compared to cells exposed to Photofrin II plus a 2 Gy ionizing radiation. Conclusion: The combination of both methods did neither demonstrate a synergistic or additive effect nor did it lead to a negative influence of both modulating factors in an in vitro setting.

This paper gives an introduction to the essential challenges of software engineering and requirements that software has to fulfill in the domain of automation. Besides, the functional characteristics, specific constraints and circumstances are considered for deriving requirements concerning usability, the technical process, the automation functions, used platform and the well-established models, which are described in detail. On the other hand, challenges result from the circumstances at different points in the single phases of the life cycle of the automated system. The requirements for life-cycle-management, tools and the changeability during runtime are described in detail.
