Irrigation and nitrogen fertiliser optimisation in protected vegetable fields of northern China:Achieving environmental and agronomic sustainability

Globally,sub-optimal use of nitrogen (N) fertiliser and elevated N irrigation groundwater have led to high leached nitrate (NO_(3)^(–)) losses from protected vegetable field systems.Optimising fertiliser and irrigation management in different soil types is crucial to reduce future N loads from such systems.The present 4-year study examined leached N loads from lysimeter monitoring arrays set up across 18 protected vegetable system sites encompassing the dominant soil types of northern China.The treatments applied at each field site were:1) a high N and high irrigation input treatment (HNHI);2) a low N but high irrigation input treatment (LNHI) and 3) a low N with low irrigation input treatment (LNLI).Results showed that the mean annual leached total nitrogen loads from the HNHI,LNHI and LNLI treatments were 325,294 and 257 kg N ha^(–1) in the fluvo-aquic soil,114,100 and 78 kg N ha^(–1) in the cinnamon soil and 79,68 and 57 kg N ha^(–1) in the black soil,respectively.The N dissolved in irrigation water in the fluvo-aquic soil areas was 8.26-fold higher than in the cinnamon areas.A structural equation model showed that N fertiliser inputs and leaching water amounts explained 14.7 and 81.8%of the variation of leached N loads,respectively.Correspondingly,reducing irrigation water by 21.5%decreased leached N loads by 20.9%,while reducing manure N and chemical N inputs by 22 and 25%decreased leached N loads by only 9.5%. This study highlights that protected vegetable fields dominated by fluvo-aquic soil need management to curtail leached N losses in northern China.

Microbial-driven ectopic uranium extraction with net electrical energy production

The extraction of uranium (U) from U-bearing wastewater is of paramount importance for mitigating negative environmental impacts and recovering U resources. Microbial reduction of soluble hexavalent uranium (U(VI)) to insoluble tetravalent uranium (U(IV)) holds immense potential for this purpose, but its practical application has been impeded by the challenges associated with managing U-bacterial mixtures and the biotoxicity of U. To address these challenges, we present a novel spontaneous microbial electrochemical (SMEC) method that spatially decoupled the microbial oxidation reaction and the U(VI) reduction reaction. Our results demonstrated stable and efficient U extraction with net electrical energy production, which was achieved with both synthetic and real wastewater. U(VI) removal occurred via diffusion-controlled U(VI)-to-U(IV) reduction-precipitation at the cathode, and the UIVO_(2) deposited on the surface of the cathode contributed to the stability and durability of the abiotic U(VI) reduction. Metagenomic sequencing revealed the formation of efficient electroactive communities on the anodic biofilm and enrichment of the key functional genes and metabolic pathways involved in electron transfer, energy metabolism, the TCA cycle, and acetate metabolism, which indicated the ectopic reduction of U(VI) at the cathode. Our study represents a significant advancement in the cost-effective recovery of U from U(VI)-bearing wastewater and may open a new avenue for sustainable uranium extraction.

Monascus vinegar alleviates high-fat-diet-induced inflammation in rats by regulating the NF-κB and PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathways

Monascus vinegar(MV) is a typical fermented food with various health-promoting effects. This study aimed to evaluate the role of MV in alleviating high-fat-diet-induced inflammation in rats with hyperlipidemia and elucidate the possible regulatory mechanisms. In the study, serum lipid profiles, liver pathology and liver inflammatory cytokines were analyzed in hyperlipidemia rats with MV(0.5 mL/kg mb, 2 mL/kg mb). Results showed that the administration of MV alleviated dyslipidemia by decreasing the serum and liver levels of triglyceride and total cholesterol. Increase in hepatic lipase and carnitine palmitoyl transferase 1(CPT-1)levels and decrease in hepatocyte steatosis, nephritis, and intestinal tissue injury in the HD group showed that high-dose MV can significantly suppress hepatic lipid accumulation and steatosis. In addition, compared with the model(MOD) group, the HD group showed significantly down-regulated the level of serum or hepatic alanine aminotransferase(ALT), aspartate aminotransferase(AST), CPT-1, interleukin(IL)-2, IL-6, IL-12,and tumor necrosis factor α(TNF-α). Moreover, the HD group showed repressed hepatic nuclear factor κB(NF-κB) pathway and inactivated phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase(PI3K)/protein kinase B(Akt)/mammalian target of rapamycin(mTOR) pathway mitigated liver inflammation. Similar results were obtained from cell experiments. Collectively, these findings revealed that MV might attenuate high-fat-diet-induced inflammation by inhibiting the NF-κB and PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathways.

A progressive framework for rotary motion deblurring

The rotary motion deblurring is an inevitable procedure when the imaging seeker is mounted in the rotating missiles.Traditional rotary motion deblurring methods suffer from ringing artifacts and noise,especially for large blur extents.To solve the above problems,we propose a progressive rotary motion deblurring framework consisting of a coarse deblurring stage and a refinement stage.In the first stage,we design an adaptive blur extents factor(BE factor)to balance noise suppression and details reconstruction.And a novel deconvolution model is proposed based on BE factor.In the second stage,a triplescale deformable module CNN(TDM-CNN)is designed to reduce the ringing artifacts,which can exploit the 2D information of an image and adaptively adjust spatial sampling locations.To establish a standard evaluation benchmark,a real-world rotary motion blur dataset is proposed and released,which includes rotary blurred images and corresponding ground truth images with different blur angles.Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art models on synthetic and real-world rotary motion blur datasets.The code and dataset are available at https://***/JinhuiQin/RotaryDeblurring.

Alum split applications strengthened phosphorus fixation and phosphate sorption in high legacy phosphorus calcareous soil

High phosphorus(P)saturation arising from historic P inputs to protected vegetable fields(PVFs)drives high P mobilisation to waterbodies.Amendment of soils with alum has shown potential in terms of fixing labile P and protecting water quality.The present 15 month pot experiment investigated P stabilisation across single alum application(Alum-1 treatment,20 g alum/kg soil incorporated into soil before the maize was sown),alum split applications(Alum-4 treatment,5 g alum/kg soil incorporated into soil before each crop was sown i.e.4×5 g/kg)and soil only treatment(Control).Results showed that the Alum-1 treatment caused the strongest stabilisation of soil labile P after maize plant removal,whereas the P stabilisation effect was gradually weakened due to the transformation of soil non-labile P to labile P and the reduced active Al^(3+)in soil solution.For the Alum-4 treatment,soil labile P decreased gradually with each crop planting and was lower than the Alum-1 treatment at the end of the final crop removal,without any impairment on plant growth.The better P stabilisation at the end of Alum-4 treatment was closely correlated with a progressive supply of Al^(3+)and a gradual decrease of pH,which resulted in higher contents of poorlycrystalline Al,Fe and exchangeable Ca.These aspects were conducive to increasing the soil P stabilisation and phosphate sorption.In terms of management,growers in continuous cropping systems could utilise split alum applications as a strategy to alleviate P losses in high-P enriched calcareous soil.

Impact of non-ideal UE hardware on cell-free massive MIMO network with centralized operation

This paper investigates the impact of non-ideal user equipment(UE) hardware on a cell-free(CF) massive MIMO(mMIMO) network with centralized operation under spatially correlated channels. The minimum mean-squared error(MMSE) estimator can be derived with the help of the generic non-ideal UE hardware model. It is demonstrated that even if the effective signal-to-noise ratio approaches infinity, pilot contamination and imperfect hardware can cause a non-zero estimation error floor. After that, a lower bound is determined for the ergodic uplink capacity of the centralized CF mMIMO network under non-ideal UE hardware. Moreover, the optimal receive combining vector is obtained to maximize the uplink spectral efficiency(SE). The maximum ratio(MR) and regularized zero-forcing(RZF) combining schemes are offered as alternatives in light of the computational complexity of the MMSE receiver. Comparing the RZF to the MMSE scheme under different levels of hardware impairments, our findings indicate that the RZF receiver suffers a negligible loss in total SE. For MR combining, a novel closed-form uplink achievable SE expression is obtained based on the MMSE estimator and the use-and-then-forget bounding technique. This expression gives vital insights into the achievable uplink performance with UE hardware impairments. Besides, for various hardware impairment factors, the impact of pilot sequence length on average sum SE is disclosed for different receive combining schemes. To increase the overall SE of the max-min fairness scheme, a heuristic fractional power control scheme with UE hardware impairments is developed, which can essentially avoid sacrificing the SE of other UEs while maximizing the SE of the unluckiest UE in the whole network. Finally,our theoretical performance analysis and power control algorithm are validated by simulation results, and fundamental design guidelines are provided for selecting hardware satisfying the practical UE requirements.

Bi_(2)WO_(6)/AgInS_(2)S-scheme heterojunction:Efficient photodegradation of organic pollutant and toxicity evaluation

Constructing of heterojunction was identified as a feasible way to improve photocatalytic activity of pho-tocatalyst.In this work,a n-p type Bi_(2)WO_(6)/AgInS_(2)S-scheme heterojunction was successfully prepared for organic pollutants degradation.This Bi_(2)WO_(6)/AgInS_(2)S-scheme heterojunction exhibited much higher pho-tocatalytic activity towards Rhodamine B(92.24%,expose to visible light for 60 min),norfloxacin(81.73%,expose to visible light for 90 min)and levofloxacin(87.46%,expose to visible light for 90 min)than pure Bi_(2)WO_(6)and pure AgInS_(2).Toxicity analysis indicated the low environmental toxicity of Rhodamine B degradation intermediates for Rye seeds and Sudangrass seeds germination and growth.Mechanism study displayed that AgInS_(2)and Bi_(2)WO_(6)work as the primary photocatalyst to form·O_(2)−and ·OH,respectively.The improved photocatalytic activity of the Bi_(2)WO_(6)/AgInS_(2)S-scheme heterojunction was due to the im-proved light response range and intensified carrier separation capability.Additionally,a S-scheme charge transfer mechanism including multiple charge transfer channels was proposed.This work could provide an effective strategy for organic pollutants degradation in wastewater.

Soliton resolution and asymptotic stability of N-solutions for the defocusing Kundu–Eckhaus equation with nonzero boundary conditions

In this paper,we address interesting soliton resolution,asymptotic stability of N-soliton solutions and the Painleve asymptotics for the Kundu-Eckhaus(KE)equation with nonzero boundary conditions iq_(t)+q_(xx)-2(l|q|^(2)-1)q+4β^(2)(lql^(4)-1)q+4iβ(lql^(2))_(x)q=0,q(x,0)=q_(0)(x)-±1,x→±∞.The key to proving these results is to establish the formulation of a Riemann-Hilbert(RH)problem associated with the above Cauchy problem and find its connection with the RH problem of the defocusing NLS equation.With the■-steepest descent method and the results of the defocusing NLS equation,we find complete leading order approximation formulas for the defocusing KE equation on the whole(x,t)half-plane including soliton resolution and asymptotic stability of N-soliton solutions in a solitonic region,Zakharov-Shabat asymptotics in a solitonless region and the Painlevéasymptotics in two transition regions.

Flow instability of supercritical hydrocarbon fuel in a multi-channel cooling system

Thermally-induced flow instabilities are a critical issue in multi-channel regenerative cooling systems.In particular,the interactions between Density-Wave Oscillations(DWO)and Flow Maldistribution(FMD)can result in complex and disastrous instability phenomena.This study investigates the instability behaviors of hydrocarbon fluid in a four-channel system with a constant heat flux ratio using both frequency-and time-domain methods.As the heat flux increases,the in-tube flow sequentially destabilizes in each channel and converges to new equilibrium states,leading to the emergence of FMD phenomena.This also causes the system eigenvalue to change repeatedly from negative to positive rather than increasing monotonically.Additionally,the system eigenvalues are between those of the two most unstable channels,indicating that the stability behavior of the entire system is dictated by the most unstable channel.After FMD occurs,flow oscillations are activated in channels with weak stability,and the in-tube flow is observed to evolve into various flow patterns,including stable flow,self-sustained oscillation,oscillation divergence,quasiperiodic oscillation,and oscillation excursion.The novel instability mode of oscillation excursion involves a spontaneous transition of operating states.It oscillates from an equilibrium state and then stabilizes at a new operational state after oscillation-induced redistribution.However,the newfound stable state may also be only temporary,with the in-tube flow regressing to the initial state,resulting in quasi-periodic oscillation.

Porous ceramic composites with directional microchannels from micrometer to dozens of micrometer levels have attracted more and more attention in various fields including aerospace,biomedicines,and thermal insulation due to their excellent fluid permeability,mechanical properties,etc.In this article,we summarize the recent directional porous ceramics developments including their main processing routes and respective properties.Meanwhile,the properties get from different processing routes have been com-pared and analyzed in terms of microstructures,mechanical properties,and permeability.Emphasis has been given to the deeper understanding which can allow one to control the microstructural features of these porous ceramic composites to obtain the desired characteristics.This work can provide a useful reference for the development and application of porous ceramic composites with directional microchan-nels.
