Modified basalt material reinforced organic coatings: A review

Natural basalt can be processed into rod-like basalt fibers(BFs) and flake-like basalt scales(BSs) through high-temperature melting, forming and other processes. BFs and BSs have great application prospects in the field of organic coatings. BFs possess a regular rod-like structure and excellent mechanical properties, which are mainly used to enhance the mechanical properties of organic coatings. BSs possess a relatively irregular flake-like structure, which can form “maze” effects and layered structures to enhance corrosion resistance of organic coatings. However, basalt materials have poor compatibility, adhesion, and dispersion in organic resins due to their chemical inertness, resulting in a weak basalt-resin interface. Basalt-resin interface is an important parameter that determines the service performance of basalt composite coatings. Therefore, it is necessary to improve basalt-resin interface through corresponding strategies, such as chemical etching, chemical grafting and plasma treatment. Firstly, the surface modification strategies for improving basalt-matrix interface were summarized in this paper. Secondly, we discussed the effects of BFs and BSs on corrosion resistance of organic coatings and corrosion protection mechanism of composite coatings. Finally, we reviewed the research progress of modified basalt materials reinforced organic coatings.

Radio-frequency design and commissioning of a flexible waveguide for high-vacuum S-band applications

Purpose Flexible waveguides,which allow for greater deformation as compared to traditional hard waveguides,are highly useful for simplifying waveguide system ***,the peak powers of these waveguides have been limited to several megawatts in non-vacuum ***,a novel flexible waveguide was developed for the S-band(2856 MHz)with the aim of facilitating the interconnection of two hard *** The flexible waveguide was composed of brass,and its surface was plated with oxygen-free high-conductivity copper for brazing with stainless steel flanges in a vacuum *** connecting the stainless steel flanges together,it can be applied to a high-vacuum *** The prototype exhibited good measurement results in low-power microwave tests;the results of a 72-h vacuum leak test showed satisfactory vacuum performance as well,and no obvious surface collapse was ***-power microwave commissioning was conducted between June and July 2019;the waveguide showed a maximum average power of approximately 2.7 *** Unfortunately,the prototype was damaged after reaching that power level,which indicates the need for further optimization of the fabrication *** our experiment,it is clear that the flexible waveguide cannot be used in large accelerators because of its average power limit.

The effects of soil moisture and salinity as functions of groundwater depth on wheat growth and yield in coastal saline soils

In the coastal saline soils,moisture and salinity are the functions of groundwater depth affecting crop growth and ***,the objectives of this study were to:1)investigate the combined effects of moisture and salinity stresses on wheat growth as affected by groundwater depth,and 2)find the optimal groundwater depth for wheat growth in coastal saline *** groundwater depths(0.7,1.1,1.5,1.9,2.3,and 2.7 m during 2013-2014(Y1)and 0.6,1.0,1.4,1.8,2.2,and 2.6 m during 2014-2015(Y2))of the field experiment were maintained by soil *** was a positive correlation between soil moisture and *** logging with high salinity(groundwater depth at 0.7 m in Y1 and 0.6 m in Y2)showed a greater decline towards wheat growth than that of slight drought with medium(2.3 m in Y1)or low salinity(2.7 m in Y1,2.2 and 2.6 m in Y2).The booting stage was the most sensitive stage of wheat crop under moisture and salinity *** showed the most optimal rate of photosynthesis,grain yield,and flour quality were obtained under the groundwater depth(ditch depth)of 1.9 m(standard soil moisture with medium salinity)and 2.3 m(slight drought with medium salinity)in Y1 and 1.8 m(standard soil moisture with medium salinity)and 2.2 m(slight drought with low salinity)in *** corresponding optimal soil relative moisture content and conductivity with the 1:5 distilled water/soil dilution,in the depth of 0-20 cm and 20-40 cm in coastal saline soils,were equal to 58.67-63.07%and 65.51-72.66%in Y1,63.09-66.70%and 69.75-74.72%in Y2;0.86-1.01 dS m^-1 and 0.63-0.77 dS m^-1 in Y1,0.57-0.93 dS m^-1 and 0.40-0.63 dS m^-1 in Y2,respectively.

Experimental investigation on electrical characteristics and ignition performance of multichannel plasma igniter

Relighting of jet engines at high altitudes is very difficult because of the high velocity, low pressure, and low tempera- ture of the inlet airflow. Successful ignition needs sufficient ignition energy to generate a spark kernel to induce a so-called critical flame initiation radius. However, at high altitudes with high-speed inlet airflow, the critical flame initiation radius becomes larger; therefore, traditional ignition technologies such as a semiconductor igniter （SI） become infeasible for use in high-altitude relighting of jet engines. In this study, to generate a large spark kernel to achieve successful ignition with high-speed inlet airflow, a new type of multichannel plasma igniter （MCPI） is proposed. Experiments on the electrical char- acteristics of the MCPI and SI were conducted under normal and sub-atmospheric pressures （P = 10-100 kPa）. Ignition experiments for the MCPI and SI with a kerosene/air mixture in a triple-swirler combustor under different velocities of inlet airflow （60-110 m/s）, with a temperature of 473 K at standard atmospheric pressure, were investigated. Results show that the MCPI generates much more arc discharge energy than the SI under a constant pressure; for example, the MCPI generated 6.93% and 16.05 % more arc discharge energy than that of the SI at 30 kPa and 50 kPa, respectively. Compared to the SI, the MCPI generates a larger area and height of plasma heating zone, and induces a much larger initial spark kernel. Furthermore, the lean ignition limit of the MCPI and SI decreases with an increase in the velocity of the inlet airflow, and the maximum velocity of inlet airflow where the SI and MCPI can achieve successful and reliable ignition is 88.7 m/s and 102.2 m/s, respectively. Therefore, the MCPI has the advantage of achieving successful ignition with high-speed inlet airflow and extends the average ignition speed boundary of the kerosene/air mixture by 15.2%.

Focal choroidal excavation: a preliminary interpretation based on clinic and review

AIM: To describe the clinical and imaging characteristics associated with focal choroidal excavation(FCE), analyze the possible complication, and interpret its probable ***: Retrospective descriptive case series of 37 eyes of 32 patients with FCE. Findings of spectral-domain optical coherence tomography(SD-OCT),fluorescein angiography, indocyanine green angiography,and clinical features were analyzed. RESULTS: All patients were Chinese. Five patients(15.6%) were bilaterally involved. Patients’ ages ranged from 7 to 66 y. Refractive error ranged between +2.0 D and 11.0 D. Mean best-corrected visual acuity was 0.6(range, 0.1 to 1.2). Fundus examinations exhibited mild-moderate localized pigmentary disturbances in the corresponding area of 17 eyes. Fluorescein angiography performed in 18 patients showed varying degrees of hyperfluorescence and hypofluorescence related to a range of retinal pigment epithelium(RPE) *** green angiography performed in 7 patients showed hypofluorescence at the excavation. SD-OCT demonstrated choroidal excavation in all 37 ***-nine eyes showed a single lesion of FCE, and three eyes showed 2-3 separated lesions. Fifteen eyes showed separation between the photoreceptor tips andRPE consistent with nonconforming FCE. Central serous chorioretinopathy(CSC, n =1) and choroidal neovascularization(CNV, n =1) developed during ***: FCE could be interpreted as congenital focal choroidal dysplasia involving the RPE,choriocapillaris, and photoreceptor associated with the faulty anatomy. The abnormal anatomy of FCE was similar to anatomy at risk of CSC and CNV.

Clinical features, laboratory findings and imaging appearances of venous diethylene glycol poisoning in patients with liver disease

Background There was a hospital outbreak of venous diethylene glycol poisoning in Guangzhou, China. It is the only massive episode of venous diethylene glycol poisoning in history. Here we report its clinical features, laboratory findings, and imaging appearances. Methods The clinical features of 15 venous diethylene glycol poisoning patients with liver disease were analyzed and summarized. Their laboratory findings and imaging appearances were comparatively analyzed before and after poisoning. Results All poisoned patients presented with oliguric acute renal failure with anuria after a mean of 6 days. Carbon dioxide combination power of 13 patients dropped after a mean of 9 days with valley value on the 10th day, when metabolic acidosis developed. Gastroenteric symptoms or aggravation of gastroenteric symptoms were displayed in 11 patients after a mean of 9 days. Neurological system impairment was observed in 10 patients after a mean of 14 days. Seven patients had low fever after a mean of 6 days. Causes of death of 14 patients included multiple organ dysfunction syndrome, severe lung infection and massive haemorrhage of digestive tract. Blood creatinine and urea nitrogen were abnormal after a mean of 5 days with peak value on the 11th and 14th days, respectively. Serum calcium had no obvious change, and phosphorus was distinctively increased. Liver functions did not change significantly. Poisoned patients had higher white blood cell counts, but lower red blood cell counts and hemoglobin value. Of the 7 patients who exhibited mild moderate or severe patchy consolidation shadowing in the lung, 2 manifested mild or severe gaseous distention and dilation of gastroentedc tract. Conclusions Main features of venous diethylene glycol poisoning in patients with liver disease include oliguric acute renal failure, metabolic acidosis, gastroenteric symptoms or aggravation of gastroenteric symptoms, neurological system impairment and low fever, with a mortality rate of 93.33%

Venous diethylene glycol poisoning in patients with preexisting severe liver disease in China

AIM: To analyze the clinical presentation of venous diethylene glycol (DEG) poisoning in patients with preexisting severe liver disease and factors that correlate with DEG poisoning. METHODS: Retrospective chart review was performed to analyze the epidemiology, clinical presentation, hepatorenal functions, hemodynamics and pathological characteristics of 64 patients with severe liver disease who received intravenous armillarisin-A, the solvent of which was DEG. Comparative analyses of correlating factors and causes for poisoning were based on the presence or absence of poisoning. RESULTS: Of the 64 patients who received armillarisin-A, 15 were found to have DEG poisoning. Twelve poisoned patients died. After a mean of 5 d, the poisoned patients displayed acute renal failure. Metabolic acidosis occurred in 13 cases. BUN, Cr, and CO2 values were significantly elevated and exacerbation of digestive tract symptoms and/or symptom was noted in 11 cases. Neurological system impairment was observed in 10 cases after 2 wk. Compared to the 49 non-poisoned patients, the poisoned patients exhibited significantly lower RBC and Hb values and higher WBC count. Renal biopsy from the poisoned patientsrevealed acute tubular necrosis and interstitial nephritis. Significant differences in preexisting severe hepatitis, ascites, renal disease, and diuretic therapy were found between groups. Prior to diethylene glycol injections, the mean values for neutral granular cells, BUN, Cr, calcium and phosphorous ions differed significantly between groups. CONCLUSION: Venous diethylene glycol poisoning is characterized by oliguric acute renal failure, metabolic acidosis, digestive symptoms, nervous system impairment, and a high probability of anemia and WBC proliferation. Mortality is high. Correlative factors include preexisting severe liver disease, renal disease, and infection.
