Overview on Mangrove Forest Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Functions

This paper provides a comprehensive overview on coastal protection and hazard mitigation by mangroves.Previous stud-ies have made great strides to understand the mechanisms and influencing factors of mangroves’protection function,including wave energy dissipation,storm surge damping,tsunami mitigation,adjustment to sea level rise and wind speed reduction,which are sys-tematically summarized in this study.Moreover,the study analyzes the extensive physical models,based on indoor flume experi-ments and numerical models,that consider the interaction between mangroves and hydrodynamics,to help our understanding of mangrove-hydrodynamic interactions.Additionally,quantitative approaches for valuing coastal protection services provided by man-groves,including index-based and process-resolving approaches,are introduced in detail.Finally,we point out the limitations of previous studies,indicating that efforts are still required for obtaining more long-term field observations during extreme weather events,to create more real mangrove models for physical experiments,and to develop numerical models that consider the flexible properties of mangroves to better predict wave propagation in mangroves having complex morphology and structures.

Detecting Double Mixed Compressed Images Based on Quaternion Convolutional Neural Network

Detection of color images that have undergone double compression is a critical aspect of digital image forensics.Despite the existence of various methods capable of detecting double Joint Photographic Experts Group(JPEG) compression,they are unable to address the issue of mixed double compression resulting from the use of different compression standards.In particular,the implementation of Joint Photographic Experts Group 2000(JPEG2000)as the secondary compression standard can result in a decline or complete loss of performance in existing methods.To tackle this challenge of JPEG+JPEG2000 compression,a detection method based on quaternion convolutional neural networks(QCNN) is proposed.The QCNN processes the data as a quaternion,transforming the components of a traditional convolutional neural network(CNN) into a quaternion representation.The relationships between the color channels of the image are preserved,and the utilization of color information is optimized.Additionally,the method includes a feature conversion module that converts the extracted features into quaternion statistical features,thereby amplifying the evidence of double compression.Experimental results indicate that the proposed QCNN-based method improves,on average,by 27% compared to existing methods in the detection of JPEG+JPEG2000 compression.

Porous organic polymers(POPs)have attracted extensive interest due to their structural diversity and predesigned functionality.However,the majority of POPs are synthesized as insoluble and unprocessable powders,which greatly impede their advanced applications because of limited mass transport and inadaptation for device integration.Herein,we report a controlled synthetic strategy of macroscopic POP gels by a cation-stabilized colloidal formation mechanism,which is widely adaptable to a large variety of tetra-/tri-amino build blocks for the synthesis of Tröger’s base-linked POP gels,aerogels,and ionic gels.The POP gels combined the integrated advantages of hierarchically porous structures and tailorable mechanical stiffness,whereas they could load substantial amounts of phosphoric acids and construct unimpeded transport pathways for proton conduction,exhibiting unprecedented proton conductivity at subzero temperatures.Our strategy offers a new solution to the intractable processing issues of POPs toward device applications with cutting-edge performances.

Carbon materials have been used as the support for catalysts in the field of acetylene hydrochlorination,the influence of inevitable oxygen-containing moieties on the reaction is often ignored and the mechanism of the oxygen-doping structure remains ambiguous.Herein,we explored the effect of the oxygen-containing group(C-O-C)in the support on the activity of single-atom dispersed Cu catalysts.By immersing the Cu single-atom catalyst in an alkaline solution,the epoxy species on the carbon support was cleaved to obtain a pure ether species while the Cu site was modified to a more electron-deficient state.The turnover frequency value of Cu/O-FLP catalyst with epoxy groups was 1.6-fold higher than that of alkaline treated catalyst.Our result indicated that the epoxy groups could assist adjacent single-atom Cu sites to synergistically promote the adsorption and cleavage of the reactant hydrogen chloride toward form C-OH and Cu-Cl bonds,and reduce the reaction energy barrier.The presence of electron deficient Cu sites and ether species could induce competitive adsorption of the acetylene and hydrogen chloride,thereby reducing the activity of the catalyst.This study highlights the influence of surface oxygen species and the tunability of the support,providing the foundation for the fabrication of higher-activity Cu catalysts for acetylene hydrochlorination.

Background:Tai Chi has been shown to improve motor symptoms in Parkinson’s disease(PD),but its long-term effects and the related mechanisms remain to be elucidated.In this study,we investigated the effects of long-term Tai Chi training on motor symptoms in PD and the underlying mechanisms.Methods:Ninety-five early-stage PD patients were enrolled and randomly divided into Tai Chi(n=32),brisk walk-ing(n=31)and no-exercise(n=32)groups.At baseline,6 months and 12 months during one-year intervention,all participants underwent motor symptom evaluation by Berg balance scale(BBS),Unified PD rating-scale(UPDRS),Timed Up and Go test(TUG)and 3D gait analysis,functional magnetic resonance imaging(fMRI),plasma cytokine and metabolomics analysis,and blood Huntingtin interaction protein 2(HIP2)mRNA level analysis.Longitudinal self-changes were calculated using repeated measures ANOVA.GEE(generalized estimating equations)was used to assess factors associated with the longitudinal data of rating scales.Switch rates were used for fMRI analysis.False discovery rate correction was used for multiple correction.Results:Participants in the Tai Chi group had better performance in BBS,UPDRS,TUG and step width.Besides,Tai Chi was advantageous over brisk walking in improving BBS and step width.The improved BBS was correlated with enhanced visual network function and downregulation of interleukin-1β.The improvements in UPDRS were asso-ciated with enhanced default mode network function,decreased L-malic acid and 3-phosphoglyceric acid,and increased adenosine and HIP2 mRNA levels.In addition,arginine biosynthesis,urea cycle,tricarboxylic acid cycle and beta oxidation of very-long-chain fatty acids were also improved by Tai Chi training.Conclusions:Long-term Tai Chi training improves motor function,especially gait and balance,in PD.The underlying mechanisms may include enhanced brain network function,reduced inflammation,improved amino acid metabolism,energy metabolism and neurotransmitter metabolism,and decreased vulnerability to dopaminergic

With the breakthrough of AlphaGo,deep reinforcement learning has become a recognized technique for solving sequential decision-making problems.Despite its reputation,data inefficiency caused by its trial and error learning mechanism makes deep reinforcement learning difficult to apply in a wide range of areas.Many methods have been developed for sample efficient deep reinforcement learning,such as environment modelling,experience transfer,and distributed modifications,among which distributed deep reinforcement learning has shown its potential in various applications,such as human-computer gaming and intelligent transportation.In this paper,we conclude the state of this exciting field,by comparing the classical distributed deep reinforcement learning methods and studying important components to achieve efficient distributed learning,covering single player single agent distributed deep reinforcement learning to the most complex multiple players multiple agents distributed deep reinforcement learning.Furthermore,we review recently released toolboxes that help to realize distributed deep reinforcement learning without many modifications of their non-distributed versions.By analysing their strengths and weaknesses,a multi-player multi-agent distributed deep reinforcement learning toolbox is developed and released,which is further validated on Wargame,a complex environment,showing the usability of the proposed toolbox for multiple players and multiple agents distributed deep reinforcement learning under complex games.Finally,we try to point out challenges and future trends,hoping that this brief review can provide a guide or a spark for researchers who are interested in distributed deep reinforcement learning.

Size-dependent modulation of CoOOH nanoflakes light scattering for rapid and selective detection of tetracycline in milk

As an antibiotic,tetracycline has been widely used against bacterial infection or as feed additives for growth promotion,which may lead to the enrichment of antibiotic residues in animals or their products.Therefore,the detection of tetracycline is closely related to human health.The morphological transformation of CoOOH nanoflakes induced by tetracycline was monitored by scanning electron microscope images,dark-field light scattering images and optical spectra,which found that tetracycline could decompose CoOOH nanoflakes into small nanoparticles with low light scattering signal.As a result,the reduced light scattering of CoOOH nanoflakes was proportional to the increased concentration of tetracycline in the range of 1.0-250μmol/L,and the limit of determination(LOD)was 0.23μmol/L(3σ/k).Most foreign substances did not interfere in the analysis of tetracycline.Furthermore,the concentration of tetracycline in different milk samples detected with the standard addition method was so low that it accorded with the safety regulation,which was similar to the detection result with high-performance liquid chromatography(HPLC).

Objective To investigate the molecular mechanism of nectin-like molecule 1(NECL1) inhibiting the migration and invasion of U251 glioma cells.Methods We infected U251 glioma cells with adeno-nectin-like molecule 1(Ad-NECL1) or empty adenovirus(Ad).Transwell and wound healing assays were performed to observe the migration of U251 cells incubated with the cell supernatant from Ad-NECL1 or Ad infected U251 cells.DNA microarray was applied to screen the gene expression profile after the restoration of NECL1 in U251 glioma cell lines.The differential expression of osteopontin(OPN),a gene related to migration and invasion,was further analyzed with semi-quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR),Western blot,and immunohistochemistry.Results The restoration of NECL1 inhibited migration of U251 cells significantly(P<0.05).Altogether 195 genes were found differentially expressed by microarray,in which 175 were up-regulated and 20 down-regulated,including 9 extracellular matrix proteins involved in the migration of cells.Both mRNA and protein expressions of OPN,the most markedly reduced extracellular matrix protein,were found decreased in U251 cells after restoration of NECL1.Immunohistochemical assay also detected an increase of OPN in glioma tissues,related with the progressing of malignant grade.Conclusion A link might exist between NECL1 and the extracellular matrix protein OPN in inhibiting the migration and invasion of U251 glioma cells.
