The effect of downstream resistance on flow diverter treatment of a cerebral aneurysm at a bifurcation: A joint computational-experimental study

Intracranial aneurysm can lead to hemorrhagic stroke upon rupture. Deployment of flow diverters can restrict the blood flow into aneurysm and mitigate the rupture risk. Computational fluid dynamics（CFD） and ultrasonography with pulse-wave and color Doppler ultrasound measurements were employed jointly to investigate the complex flow pattern in cerebral aneurysms, both before and after the deployment of flow diverters. Patient-specific configurations of both bifurcation and side-wall aneurysms were selected. The effect of downstream flow resistance was investigated by adjusting the volume flow rate and pressure at the outlet vessels computationally and experimentally. Velocity profiles in the aneurysm measured from ultrasonography showed good agreement with those from computer simulations. The discrepancy in velocity between the computational and experimental sets of data is less than 10%. The downstream resistance can alter the volume flux into a bifurcation aneurysm with a flow diverter deployed by 236%, while the corresponding value of a side-wall aneurysm is negligible. The vorticity of the aneurysmal flow was reduced by more than 80% in both cases after stenting. This study demonstrated that careful investigation of downstream flow resistance of a bifurcation aneurysm is essential to provide an accurate assessment of the aneurysmal flow dynamics after flow diverter deployment.

Nuclear mass predictions based on a deep neural network and finite-range droplet model(2012)

A neural network with two hidden layers is developed for nuclear mass prediction,based on the finiterange droplet model(FRDM12).Different hyperparameters,including the number of hidden units,choice of activation functions,initializers,and learning rates,are adjusted explicitly and systematically.The resulting mass predictions are achieved by averaging the predictions given by several different sets of hyperparameters with different regularizers and seed numbers.This can provide not only the average values of mass predictions but also reliable estimations in the mass prediction uncertainties.The overall root-mean-square deviations of nuclear mass are reduced from 0.603 MeV for the FRDM12 model to 0.200 MeV and 0.232 MeV for the training and validation sets,respectively.

A biosynthetic gene cluster for the bioactive fungal sesterterpenoids variecolin(1)and variecolactone(2)was identified in Aspergillus aculeatus ATCC 16872.Heterologous production of 1 and 2 was achieved in Aspergillus oryzae by expressing the sesterterpene synthase VrcA and the cytochrome P450 VrcB.Intriguingly,the replacement of VrcB with homologous P450s from other fungal terpenoid pathways yielded three new variecolin analogues(5-7).Analysis of the compounds’anticancer activity in vitro and in vivo revealed that although 5 and 1 had comparable activities,5 was associated with significantly reduced toxic side effects in cancer-bearing mice,indicating its potentially broader therapeutic window.Our study describes the first tests of variecolin and its analogues in animals and demonstrates the utility of synthetic biology for creating molecules with improved biological activities.

Thermal management has become a crucial problem for high-power-density equipment and devices.Phase change materials(PCMs)have great prospects in thermal management applications because of their large capacity of heat storage and isothermal behavior during phase transition.However,low intrinsic thermal conductivity,ease of leakage,and lack of flexibility severely limit their applications.solving one of these problems often comes at the expense of other performance of the PCMs.In this work,we report core–sheath structured phase change nanocomposites(PCNs)with an aligned and interconnected boron nitride nanosheet network by combining coaxial electrospinning,electrostatic spraying,and hot-pressing.The advanced PCN films exhibit an ultrahigh thermal conductivity of 28.3 W m^(-1)K^(-1)at a low BNNs loading(i.e.,32 wt%),which thereby endows the PCNs with high enthalpy(>101 J g^(-1)),outstanding ductility(>40%)and improved fire retardancy.Therefore,our core–sheath strategies successfully balance the trade-off between thermal conductivity,flexibility,and phase change enthalpy of PCMs.Further,the PCNs provide powerful cooling solutions on 5G base station chips and thermoelectric generators,displaying promising thermal management applications on high-power-density equipment and thermoelectric conversion devices.

sequence assembly using next generation sequencing data —challenges and solutions

sequence assembling is an important step for bioinformatics study.With the help of next generation sequencing(NGs)technology,high throughput DNA fragment(reads)can be randomly sampled from DNA or RNA molecular sequence.However,as the positions of reads being sampled are unknown,assembling process is required for combining overlapped reads to reconstruct the original DNA or RNA sequence.Compared with traditional sanger sequencing methods,although the throughput of NGs reads increases,the read length is shorter and the error rate is higher.It introduces several problems in assembling.Moreover,paired-end reads instead of single-end reads can be sampled which contain more information.The existing assemblers cannot fully utilize this information and fails to assemble longer contigs.In this article,we will revisit the major problems of assembling NGs reads on genomic,transcriptomic,metagenomic and metatranscriptomic data.We will also describe our IDBA package for solving these problems.IDBA package has adopted several novel ideas in assembling,including using multiple k,local assembling and progressive depth removal.Compared with existence assemblers,IDBA has better performance on many simulated and real sequencing datasets.

Fungi and bacteria afflict humans with innumerous pathogen-related infections and ailments.Most of the commonly employed microbicidal agents target commensal and pathogenic microorganisms without discrimination.To distinguish and fight the pathogenic species out of the microflora,novel antimicrobials have been developed that selectively target specific bacteria and fungi.The cell wall features and antimicrobial mechanisms that these microorganisms involved in are highlighted in the present review.This is followed by reviewing the design of antimicrobials that selectively combat a specific community of microbes including Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains as well as fungi.Finally,recent advances in the antimicrobial immunomodulation strategy that enables treating microorganism infections with high specificity are reviewed.These basic tenets will enable the avid reader to design novel approaches and compounds for antibacterial and antifungal applications.

Arsenic Accumulation in Rice:sources,Human Health Impact and Probable Mitigation Approaches

The human body loading with arsenic(As)through rice consumption is a global health concern.There is a crucial need to limit As build-up in rice,either by remediating As accumulation in soils or reducing As levels in irrigation water.several conventional approaches have been utilized to alleviate the As accumulation in rice.However,except for some irrigation practices,those approaches success and the adoption rate are not remarkable.This review presents human health risks posed due to consumption of As contaminated rice,evaluates different biomarkers for tracing As loading in the human body,and discusses the latest advancement in As reducing technologies emphasizing the application of seed priming,nanotechnology,and biochar application for limiting As loading in rice grains.We also evaluate different irrigation techniques to reduce As accumulation in rice.Altering water management regimes significantly reduces grain As accumulation.Bio-and nano-priming of rice seeds improve germination and minimize As translocation in rice tissues by protecting cell membrane,building pool around seed coat,methylation and volatilization,or quenching harmful effects of reactive oxygen species.Nanoparticle application in the form of nano-adsorbents or nano-fertilizers facilitates nano-remediation of As through the formation of Fe plaque or sorption or oxidation process.Incorporating biochar in the rice fields significantly reduces As through immobilization,physical adsorption,or surface complexation.In conclusion,As content in cooked rice depends on irrigation source and raw rice As level.

Phenomapping approach to interpreting coronary dimensions in febrile children

Importance:Coronary artery dilation may occur in febrile children with and without Kawasaki disease(KD).Objective:We explored the application of unsupervised learning algorithms in the detection of novel patterns of coronary artery phenotypes in febrile children with and without KD.Methods:A total of 239 febrile children(59 non-KD and 180 KD patients),were recruited.Unsupervised hierarchical clustering analysis of phenotypic data including age,hemoglobin,white cell count,platelet count,C-reactive protein,erythrocyte sedimentation rate,albumin,alanine aminotransferase,aspartate aminotransferase,and coronary artery z scores were performed.Results:Using a cutoff z score of 2.5,the specificity was 98.3%and the sensitivity was 22.1%for differentiating non-KD from KD patients.Clustering analysis identified three phenogroups that differed in a clinical,laboratory,and echocardiographic parameters.Compared with phenogroup I,phenogroup III had the highest prevalence of KD(91%),worse inflammatory markers,more deranged liver function,higher coronary artery z scores,and lower hematocrit and albumin levels.Abnormal blood parameters in febrile children with z scores of coronary artery segmentss associated with increased risks of having KD to 8.7(P=0.003)and 4.4(P=0.002),respectively.Interpretation:Phenomapping of febrile children with and without KD identified useful laboratory parameters that aid the diagnosis of KD in febrile children with relatively normal-sized coronary arteries.

马钱科植物药钩吻具有丰富的化学成分,目前从钩吻中已经检测出了包括生物碱、环烯醚萜、甾体、三萜等结构类群,前期针对钩吻开展的植物化学研究主要集中在生物碱类成分,对于其非生物碱类成分研究较少。利用硅胶、sephadexLH-20、ODs柱色谱、高效液相色谱(HPLC)等色谱技术从钩吻地上部位中分离得到多个单体成分,运用核磁共振波谱(NMR)以及质谱(Ms)等结构鉴定手段确定所得化学成分的结构,目前共分离得到5个非碱化学成分,分别鉴定为GeleganoidG(1),methyl(E)-3-[(2R,3s)-2,3-dihydro-3-hydroxymethyl-7-methoxy-2-(4'-hydroxy-3'-methoxyphenyl)-1-benzo[b]furan-5-yl]-propenoate(2),24-propylcholesterol(3),gelsemiol(4),pisoninolⅡ(5),其中化合物3和5是首次从钩吻中分离得到。

Recyclability and self-healing are two most critical factors in developing sustainable polymers to deal with environmental pollution and resource waste.In this work,a dynamic cross-linked polyimide insulation film with full closed-loop recyclability is successfully prepared,which also possesses good self-healing ability after being mechanical/electrical damaged depending on the schiff base dynamic covalent bonds.The recycled and self-healed polyimide film still maintain its good tensile strength(r t)>60 MPa with young’s modulus(E)>4 GPa,high thermal stability with glass transition temperature(T g)>220℃,and outstanding insulation property with breakdown strength(E 0)>358 kV mm^(-1),making it a very promising low energy consumption and high temperature resistant insulation material.The strategy of using schiff base dynamic covalent bonds for reversible repairing the structure of high T g polyimides promotes the wider application of such sustainable and recyclable material in the field of electrical power and micro-electronics.
