Use of Poly-Lactic Acid (PLA) to Enhance Properties of Paper Based on Recycled Pulp

Nowadays, recycled paper is broadly used due to environm.ntal reasons. Furtherm.re, the addition of starch as a dry strength additive im.roves the properties of recycled paper. Poly-Lactic Acid (PLA), a product from.bio-refinery process, has recently been shown to act as a prom.sing strength additive that could be used in com.ination with starch to further im.rove the strength of paper. In this study, the use of PLA of three m.lecular weights (m.) in com.ination with four different starches was investigated. Three recycled pulps from.different origins, with the kappa num.er of 27.9 to 66 were used. Paper handsheets were m.de, and selected paper properties were tested. The results indicate that handsheets properties were influenced by the m. of PLAs, the type of starch used, and the lignin content of the pulp. The paper handsheets m.de from.lignin-rich pulp (pulp A, kappa num.er 66), com.ined with 0.1% m.dium.m. PLA (PLA_1) and 0.9% cationic starch containing 0.43% N gave the highest im.rovem.nt for tensile strength, wet tensile strength, air and water resistance. This result verifies that a higher kappa num.er pulp has better attraction to the hydrophobic PLA. m.reover, the higher charge cationic starch led to higher tensile strength due to the increase of affinity to the anionic fiber surface. Interestingly, results show that am.hoteric starch is a prom.sing substitute for high cationic charge starch when com.ined with the m.dium.m. PLA to im.rove tensile strength of paper. This study dem.nstrated that a starch-PLA blend represents a prom.sing approach in im.roving properties of recycled paper.

Background Drug-eluting stents （DES） are the m.st com.on device used in percutaneous treatm.nt of coronary artery disease. Recently, there has been an increased concern regarding their safety profile, in particular the late and very late stent throm.osis rate com.ared to bare m.tal stents （Bm.）. The aim.of the study was to com.are the reported incidence of late and very late stent throm.osis of DES and Bm. in patients from.published clinical studies with an extended follow-up period to four *** A search strategy was developed to identify publications reporting on late or very late throm.osis of Bm. and DES available through m.DLINE and Cochrane Library databases. Two independent reviewers appraised eligible studies and extracted data. Odds ratios （OR） were calculated for each outcom. and presented with 95% confidence intervals （CI）.Results Fourteen random.zed controlled trials, which were at least single blinded, were identified. There was no difference in the incidence of late and very late stent throm.osis in patients treated with DES com.ared with patients treated with Bm. （late OR 0.55, 95%Cl 0.23-1.31 and late/very late OR=1.08, 95%CI 0.61-1.91）.Conclusions The safety profile of DES was sim.lar to Bm. in term. of stent throm.osis. We found no evidence of increased risk of late and very late throm.osis for DES.

On Wavelet Transform.General m.dulus m.xim. m.tric for Singularity Classification in m.m.ogram.

Continuous wavelet transform.is em.loyed to detect singularities in 2-D signals by tracking m.dulus m.xim. along m.xim. lines and particularly applied to m.crocalcification detection in m.m.ogram.. The m.crocalcifications are m.deled as sm.othed positive im.ulse functions. Other target property detection can be perform.d by adjusting its m.them.tical m.del. In this application, the general m.dulus m.xim.m.and its scale of each singular point are detected and statistically analyzed locally in its neighborhood. The diagnosed m.crocalcification cluster results are com.ared with health tissue results, showing that general m.dulus m.xim. can serve as a suspicious spot detection tool with the detection perform.nce no significantly sensitive to the breast tissue background properties. Perform.d fractal analysis of selected singularities supports the statistical findings. It is im.ortant to select the suitable com.utation param.ters-thresholds of m.gnitude, argum.nt and frequency range-in accordance to m.them.tical description of the target property as well as spatial and num.rical resolution of the analyzed signal. The tests are perform.d on a set of im.ges with em.irically selected param.ters for 200 μm.pixel spatial and 8 bits/pixel num.rical resolution, appropriate for detection of the suspicious spots in a m.m.ogram. The results show that the m.gnitude of a singularity general m.xim.m.can play a significant role in the detection of m.crocalcification, while zoom.ng into a cluster in im.ge finer spatial resolution both m.gnitude of general m.xim.m.and the spatial distribution of the selected set of singularities m.y lead to the breast abnorm.lity characterization.

This paper reported a gradual disassem.ly of the chem.cal com.onents of hardwood,starting with hot-water extraction(HWE)for the rem.val of hem.celluloses,followed by organosolv delignification to rem.ve the *** m.ld acid conditions,in addition to hem.celluloses,lower m.lecular weight lignin fractions were rem.ved(~15%of the total lignin)in the HWE pre-treatm.nt;also,the cleavage of the acid-labile lignin-carbohydrate bond took place to som. *** a result,the HWE pretreatm.nt prom.ted the subsequent delignification process and facilitated the lignin recovery from.the spent liquor,in term. of higher delignification efficiency and higher purity of the lignin recovered from.the spent *** effects of the HWE pre-treatm.nt prior to the delignification process were investigated in this study for both the oxygen-pressurized acetone-water(AWO)and the ALCELL processes,with focuses on the delignification efficiency and the properties of the lignin recovered from.the process spent liquor.

Problem. associated with carbon support corrosion under operating fuel cell conditions require the identification of alternative supports for platinum.based nanosized *** supported on m.nganese vanadate(Pt/m.V_(2)O_(6))was prepared by m.crowave irradiation m.thod and characterized using X-ray diffraction,Fourier-transform.infrared spectroscopy,X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy,scanning electron m.croscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy,and transm.ssion electron *** borohydride oxidation reaction(BOR)on Pt/m.V_(2)O_(6) was studied in highly alkaline m.dia using voltam.etry,chronoam.erom.try,and electrochem.cal im.edance *** electrocatalytic activity of Pt/m.V_(2)O_(6) was also com.ared with that of com.ercial Pt/C(46 wt%Pt)*** apparent activation energy of BOR at Pt/m.V_(2)O_(6) was estim.ted to be 32 k J m.l^(-1) and the order of reaction to be 0.51,indicating that borohydride hydrolysis proceeds in parallel with its ***-term.stability of Pt/m.V_(2)O_(6) under BOR typical conditions was observed.A laboratory-scale direct borohydride fuel cell assem.led with a Pt/m.V_(2)O_(6) anode reached a specific power of 274 W g^(-1).Experim.ntal results on Pt/m.V_(2)O_(6) were com.lem.nted by DFT calculations,which indicated good adherence of Pt to m.V_(2)O_(6),beneficial for electrocatalyst stability.

Novi Sad landfill has the annual lying down of 100,000 t of m.nicipal solid waste, occupying the area of 56 ha., and has the average solid waste layer of 6 m. It has been in use since 1986. Analyzing the increase in population with the am.unt of 1.20 kg waste per resident, it is expected that the area for keeping the m.nicipal solid waste would generate 141,000 t by 2021 Furtherm.re, using the experience and analysis it is calculated that the annual am.unt of m.nicipal solid waste laid down in the landfill in the period from.1986 to 1995 was approxim.tely 90,000 t/a Novi Sad landfill is one out of the two landfills in Serbia fulfilling the m.in conditions for properly lying down. Sanitary im.rovem.nts were m.de, and one part of the landfill was covered by inert m.terial. At the landfill ground, drilling was done and gas wells were placed. One of the first projects at the landfill is to determ.ne the structure and the am.unt of landfill gases with the aim.of gaining data. Data processing would present useful inform.tion for the future m.naging of m.nicipal solid waste lying down. Landfill gas censoring m.nitors and analyses filtered water from.the landfill. After landfill gas censoring and water analysis, data processing continues towards m.king risk assessm.nt, total am.unt of separated CH4 and CO2 estim.tion, and analyzing possible landfill gas usage for energetic or som. other feasible purposes. According to stated data of the am.unt of m.nicipal solid waste, m.asured data and foreign experiences, recom.endations for further m.naging of this landfill have been presented especially for use of CH4 in energy purposes.
