BACKGROUND A significant subset of individuals with epilepsy fails to respond to currently available antiepileptic drugs,resulting in heightened mortality rates,psychosocial challenges,and a diminished quality of *** factors,particularly within the SCN1A gene,and the pro-inflammatory cytokine response is important in intricating the drug resistance in idiopathic epilepsy *** this extended study,we determined the correlation of rs6732655A/T single nucleotide polymorphism to understand the causative association of SCN1A gene with epilepsy drug resistance and inflammatory *** To find the correlation of SCN1A gene rs6732655A/T polymorphism with the drug-resistant epilepsy and inflammatory *** The study enrolled 100 age and sex-matched patients of both drug-resistant and drug-responsive epilepsy *** analysed the rs6732655A/T polymorphism to study its association and causative role in drug-resistant epilepsy cases using restriction fragment length polymorphism *** diagnostic performance of interleukin(IL)-1β,IL-6,and high mobility group box 1(HMGB1)protein levels was evaluated in conjunction with genotypic outcome receiver operating characteristic *** AT and AA genotypes of rs6732655 SCN1A gene polymorphism were associated with higher risk of drug resistance *** biomarkers IL-6,IL1βand HMGB1 demonstrated diagnostic potential,with cutoff values of 4.63 pg/mL,59.52 pg/mL and 7.99 ng/mL,respectively,offering valuable tools for epilepsy ***,specific genotypes(AA and AT)were found to be linked to the elevated levels of IL-1βand IL-6 and potentially reflecting increased oxidative stress and neuro-inflammation in drug-resistant cases supporting the previous reported outcome of high inflammatory markers response in drug resistance *** SCN1A genotypes AA and AT are linked to higher drug-resistant epilepsy *** findings underscore the potential influence of inflammation

Texture coefficient and band gap tailoring of Fe-doped SnO_(2) nanoparticles via thermal spray pyrolysis

An investigation of Fe-doping effect on SnO_(2) thin films was performed in this study using thermal spray pyrolysis(TSP) *** surface morphology and structural,optical and electrical properties were studied by field energy scanning electron microscope(FESEM),X-ray diffraction(XRD),ultraviolet-visible(UV-Vis) spectroscopy and four-point probe *** EM images demonstrate that the surface morphology of the as-deposited films varies when Fe-doping content *** studies reveal that crystallite size and preferential growth orientations of the films are dependent on Fe-doping *** grain size is found to decrease with the increase in Fe *** studies also specify that the films have tetragonal rutile-type structure with mixed secondary *** texture coefficient value of(110) plane increases with the concomitant in-plane(220) decrease in higher doping *** resistivity and the optical absorbance are found to increase with Fe *** direct optical band gap decreases from 3.94 to3.52 eV with increasing Fe content.

Combine Harvester: Small Machine Solves Big Rice Harvesting Problem of Bangladesh

Bangladesh, a country with 87% of rural households that depend on agriculture and rice dominated diets (70%), engages the country’s food security. Therefore, there is strong advocacy for a mechanized paddy harvesting system for food security in South Asia, mainly Bangladesh. Some harvesting machinery is available;however, the precise roles of a combine harvester during this process are little. This study attempts to understand the consequences of combining harvesters for paddy harvesting and compare them with hand harvesting. For comparison of field performance of combine harvester with traditional harvesting, the experiment was conducted at Gazipur District, Bangladesh, in 2016. Results showed that the labor required for harvesting unit area 283, 15 and 9.87 man-h∙ha−1 for T1 (Sickle + Head carry + Beating + Kula), T2 (Reaper + Trolley carry + Close drum thresher + winnower), T3 (Combine harvester) system, respectively. Likewise, the harvesting costs were 1.84 (T2) and 2.5 (T1) times higher than the combine harvester (T3). Also, the postharvest loss can be saved 1.84%, to use combine harvester over manual harvesting of paddy. The above result revealed that the semi-mechanized and mechanized harvesting system is a time, labor and cost-saving system;however, the manual reaping system is concerned with more postharvest losses (3.09%). This study highlights the importance of combine harvester;however, further research is required in other places with large and mini-combine harvesters under diverse cropping areas and to test a combine harvester’s detailed potentiality.

Development and Fabrication of Manually Push-Pull Type Conical Weeder for Bangladesh Condition

In Bangladesh, the use of machinery in agriculture production is fast rising. Researchers are developing technology to replace traditional hand weeding to manage weeds in rice fields. The present study has been taken to increase weeding efficiency and reduce the drudgery in weeding and mulching. A line-to-line distance of 20 cm, the operation is push-pull, and field operating condition at 2 - 4 cm standing water (for softening the field) was the designed hypothesis. The weeder consists of a skid/float, float holder, float adjuster, main body frame, rotor, axel, bush, rotor holder, rotor holder adjuster, handle, handle griper, handle holder, handle height adjuster, nut, bolt, etc. The designed weeder was fabricated using MS sheet, MS pipe, MS flat bar, MS nut-bolt, etc. When the rotors perform back and forth, the weeder’s two conical rotors with six plain blades and six serrated blades work together to uproot and bury the weeds. It also contains a 2 mm thick float assembly with a precise angle of 22 degrees. Weeds are uprooted by the weeder’s blades and buried in the muddy soil. It causes topsoil disturbance and enhances aeration. The weeding efficiency and capacity of the conical weeder were 81.92% and 0.0203 ha/h respectively. With a push-pull operation, the weeder can uproot and bury the weeds in a single row at a time. The pushing force and weight of weeder were 43.42 N and 5.6 kg respectively. Farmers can use this weeder to increase their comfort and reduce the drudgery associated with weeding and mulching in their fields.

A Comparative Study of Thyroid Hormone and Lipid Status of Patient with and without Diabetes in Adults

Introduction: Lipid and thyroid function abnormalities are common in IDDM and NIDDM. Very few studies have addressed this issue in Bangladesh though Bangladeshi population is very much susceptible to patient with diabetes. Aims: To study on lipid profile and thyroid function in IDDM and NIDDM and the effect of glycemic control on it. Patients and Methods: This was a retrospective study carried out in the Dept. of Endocrinology, BIRDEM, Dhaka, Bangladesh during the period of January, 2012 to May, 2012. In this study, population consisted of 120 subjects (Age between 40 - 72 years;and Sex matched) divided into two groups: patient with diabetes 60 subjects (male-30, female-30) and patient without diabetes 60 subjects (male-30, female-30). Plasma glucose, HbA1c and serum lipids were measured by enzymatic method. Thyroid hormones were measured by a Chemiluminescent Micro particle Immunoassay (CMIA).Results: The statistical significance was evaluated by Student’s t-test, Correlation-Coefficient test. All Values are given as mean ± SD. The level of serum TSH in patient with diabetes (3.43 ± 2.71) was significantly (p 0.05) increased compared to patient without diabetes subjects (1.98 ± 1.72). TSH levels were positively correlated with fasting plasma glucose (r = 0.240, p 0.05), serum cholesterol (r = 0.290, p 0.020) and triglyceride concentration (r = 0.246, p 0.05). On the other hand, free T4 levels were inversely correlated with postprandial blood glucose (r =-0.256, p 0.046). Conclusions: It may be concluded that the lipid and thyroid function abnormalities with others socio-demographic and biophysical risk factors were more common in patient with diabetes cases rather than patient without diabetes cases. Therefore, further prospective studies with larger number of patients are required to strengthen the observations of the present study.

Status and Constrain for Mechanization of Rice Harvesting System in Bangladesh

To know the position, problems and suggestion of harvest mechanization of rice, the study conducted in 21 upzillas under seven regions (Dhaka, Mymensingh, Sylhet, Comilla, Bogra, Rajshahi and Rangpur) based on different agro-climatic condition and cropping intensity and 126 farmers participated in the interview. For collecting data, a structured questionnaire was used and statistical analysis of the collected data was carried out. In study area, the average cultivable area was 225 to 1239 decimal (1 decimal = 40 m2) and 97.60% farmer reaping by sickle and only 0.80% used combine harvester. Cut paddy transported by head (13.49%), shoulders (12.7%) or both of them of 11.11% farmer and 44.44% of farmers used small truck or field threshed. Threshing was mainly done using (49.21%) closed drum thresher and open drum thresher (26.20%), likewise 1 of 126 farmer use head-feed combine harvester. The study area, most farmers (37.3%) used kula for the cleaning of rice, but only 8.74% of farmers used winnower. In considerable amount, 80.95% of farmers had machinery, while the remaining (19.05%) did not have machines. Farmers agreed that harvesting was a labor-intensive method (35.71%) and time consuming (28.57%). Transporting of harvested paddy was dangerous and painful for head, shoulder, hand, waist, backbone, leg, etc. With mechanization and the introduction of machinery, 40.48% of farmers identified the main ceiling as the price of the machine and information/lack of credit system (21.43%). In survey area, most farmers (36.51%) identified the vital advantage of mechanized harvesting as lower labor requirement, while 21.43% of farmers said that a lower loss of rice. All farmers who participated in the interview expressed their need for machinery and mentioned agricultural credit with easy terms and conditions, subsidy for buying machinery and the ensuring of a fair market price for their rice.

Design and Development of a Prilled Urea Applicator

A prilled urea applicator was designed and developed to increase fertilizer use efficiency. The developed applicator’s aims to place Urea continuously at the subsurface of soil between two rows of plants. A line-to-line distance of 20 cm, depth of prilled urea placement of 5 - 7 cm, and field operating condition at 1 - 1.5 cm standing water (for softening the field) was the designed hypothesis. At the laboratory and farm level, test the developed applicator. The applicator consists of a rectangular frame, two skids and furrow opener, two cylindrical hoppers, and a drive wheel connected with a metering device. The designed applicator was fabricated using PVC, except the push handled (mild steel). The metering device consists of twelve spikes and is made of a metallic plate to apply the Urea uniformly. The applicator has a furrow opener and closer options. The effective field capacity was 0.13 ha/h with a speed of 1.22 km/h and field efficiency of 98%. Due to the continuous falling mechanism, there is no missing option but found the over-falling urea for both hoppers was found 5.35%. The average depth of urea placement was 6.38 cm. The machine was user-friendly to push, and the mean pushing force was 63.89 N. The weight of the applicator was 9 kg. So, it is natural to carry from one field to another field. The applicator is also convenient to handle, operate and manage.

Advantages of Maize-Legume Intercropping Systems

An experiment was conducted during Kharif seasons of 2009 and 2010 on sandy loam soil of West Bengal, India to evaluate the productivity and economic viability of maize ＋ legume intercropping systems in additive as well as in replacement series with different row proportions. Maize （Zea rnays L.） cv. ＂Vijay＂（composite）, green gram （Vigna radiata L.） cv. ＂Samrat＂, black gram （Vigna mungo L.） cv. ＂Sarada＂, soybean （Glycine max L. Merril） cv. ＂PK 327＂ and peanut （Arachis hypogaea L.） cv. ＂JL 24＂, were tested in monoculture as well as in intercropping situations with 1：1 （additive series） and 1：2 ratios （replacement series）. The result indicated that intercropped legumes improved the yield components of maize and offered some bonus yield. The highest maize grain yield （2,916.28 kg/ha） and maize equivalent yield （4,831.45 kg/ha） were recorded with maize ＋ green gram （1：1） and maize ＋ peanut （1：I）, respectively. The values of all the competition functions were always greater than unity and maize ＋ black gram （1：2） recorded the highest values of land equivalent ratio （1.433）, area time equivalent ratio （1.374） and land equivalent coefficient （0.421）. Maximum monetary advantage （Rs. 10,579.13） was found with maize ＋ green gam （l：1）. Maize ＋ peanut （1：2） combination recorded the highest relative net return （2.01）, net return （Rs. 28,523.08）, benefit-cost ratio （2.76） ad per day return （Rs. 259.30）.

Over 350 million years have passed since the documentation of the first interaction between plants and insects. Numerous plant defense qualities and associated counter-adaptive features have developed as a result of these interactions between insects and plants. These characteristics might be either morphological or biological in nature. One of the most significant and useful biochemical characteristics in plants is latex. Latex has a sticky property due to presence of secondary metabolites in it, which aids in entangling or sealing the mouthparts of small insects. These metabolites also chemically interact with the insects interfering with crucial bodily processes. Plant latex has amazing properties that help protect plants from insects and inhibit them in general. It may be possible to control insect pests in a natural, secure, and long-lasting manner by correctly identifying plant latex with strong insecticidal properties and developing formulations of plant latex.
