Evaluation of biostimulation and Tween 80 addition for the bioremediation of long-term DDT-contaminated soil

The bioremediation of a long-term contaminated soil through biostimulation and surfactant addition was evaluated. The concentrations of 1,1,1-trichloro-2,2-bis（4-chlorophenyl）ethane（DDT） and its metabolites 1,1-dichloro-2,2-bis（4-chlorophenyl） ethane（DDD） and1,1-dichloro-2,2-bis（4-chlorophenyl） ethylene（DDE） were monitored during an 8-week remediation process. Physicochemical characterization of the treated soil was performed before and after the bioremediation process. The isolation and identification of predominant microorganisms during the remediation process were also carried out. The efficiency of detoxification was evaluated after each bioremediation protocol. Humidity and p H and the heterotrophic microorganism count were monitored weekly. The DDT concentration was reduced by 79% after 8 weeks via biostimulation with surfactant addition（B ＋ S） and 94.3%via biostimulation alone（B）. Likewise, the concentrations of the metabolites DDE and DDD were reduced to levels below the quantification limits. The microorganisms isolated during bioremediation were identified as Bacillus thuringiensis, Flavobacterium sp., Cuprivadius sp.,Variovorax soli, Phenylobacterium sp. and Lysobacter sp., among others. Analysis with scanning electron microscopy（SEM） allowed visualization of the colonization patterns of soil particles. The toxicity of the soil before and after bioremediation was evaluated using Vibrio fischeri as a bioluminescent sensor. A decrease in the toxic potential of the soil was verified by the increase of the concentration/effect relationship EC50 to 26.9% and 27.2% for B ＋ S and B, respectively, compared to 0.4% obtained for the soil before treatment and 2.5%by natural attenuation after 8 weeks of treatment.

The witching week of herding on bitcoin exchanges

This paper analyses the herding behaviour among exchanges around the expiration of bitcoin futures traded on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange(CME).The database extends from December 2017 to October 2020,taking as a reference the main exchanges that trade bitcoin(Binance,Bitfinex,Bitstamp,Coinbase,itBit,Kraken,and Gemini)and using hourly closing prices and trading volumes in bitcoin and US *** the proposal of Chang,Cheng and Khorana(2000)(CCK)to test conditional herding,we obtain results that indicate that the herding effect is significant during the week before *** expiration,the herding effect lasts for a few hours and *** overload originating,among other causes,from sophisticated investors’strategies may generate this mimetic *** results show the relevance of intraday data applied to specific events such as expiration since the unconditional analysis shows,in general,anti-herding behaviour throughout the period of study.

Phenotypic and genomic relationships between vulva score categories and reproductive performance in first-parity sows

Background:One of the biggest challenges in the swine industry is to increase female reproductive ***,vulva score categories(VSC),assessed prior to puberty,has been proposed as an indicator trait of efficient reproductive performance in *** objective of this study was to validate the use of VSC as an indicator trait for reproductive performance,and to perform genetic and genomic analyses for ***:The phenotypic relationship of VSC,using a three-point scale:small(VSC-S),medium(VSC-M),and large(VSC-L),on reproductive performance was evaluated on three *** was measured at 15 weeks of age,for farms 1 and 2,and at 14 weeks of age for farm 3 on 3981 Yorkshire gilts,in which 1083 had genotypes(~50 K SNPs).Genetic parameters for VSC with reproductive traits were estimated using ssGBLUP.A Genome-wide association study(GWAS)for VSC was performed using ***:For the phenotypic analysis of VSC across datasets,differences in performance were identified there was a significant effect(P≤0.05)for the interaction between Farm and VSC for total number dead(TND),and a trend(P<0.10)for total number born(TNB).There were significant(P≤0.05)pre-defined contrasts of VSC-S versus VSC-M+L on TNB,number born alive(NBA),TND,number of stillborn(NSB),and number of mummies(MUM).Heritability estimates for VSC as a categorical trait(VSCc)and a quantitative trait(VSCq)were 0.40±0.02 and 0.83±0.02,respectively,for across farm,0.13±0.07 and 0.20±0.10,respectively,for Farm1,0.07±0.07 and 0.09±0.09,respectively,for Farm2,and 0.20±0.03 and 0.34±0.05,respectively,for *** across farms,favorable genetic correlations estimates were found for TNB(0.28±0.19)and NBA(0.26±0.17).Within farms,moderate genetic correlations between VSC with reproductive traits were found for TNB(0.61±0.47)and MUM(0.69±0.47)for farm 1,for number of services until first farrow(NS;0.69±0.38)and unique service with successful first farrow(SFS;−0.71±0.38)for farm *** genomic regions

Heavy Crude Oil Upgrading: Jazmin Crude

The Jazmin crude oil is located at the heart of Middle Magdalena in Colombia. It is heavy and sour crude oil with 43 wt.% of vacuum bottoms. It cannot be processed at the conventional refinery without being mixed with other lighter crudes, and should be upgraded to produce synthetic crude with higher concentration of distillates and lower acidity and carbon content. In this paper eight upgrading alternatives are presented. The alternatives include the processing of the crude, reduced crude and vacuum bottoms of the Jazmin crude oil using the following technologies: Distillation, solvent deasphalting, visbreaking, Delayed Coking, and Hydrotreating. The experiments were conducted at pilot scale, and there were used standard analysis techniques such as ASTM. In this study it was found that Jazmine crude oil and its heavy components produce high distillate yields when they were processed with thermal conversion processes. In addition those processes reduce the products acidity. Within the analyzed scheme the one corresponding to the visbreaking of the crude oil and the Delayed Coking of the vacuum bottoms from the visbreaking is perhaps the most attractive, giving 5.9 wt.% of gas, 78.2 wt.% of distillates and 15.9 wt.% of coke.

Implementation of a nurse-led protocol for early extubation after cardiac surgery: A pilot study

BACKGROUND Protocols for nurse-led extubation are as safe as a physician-guided weaning in general intensive care unit(ICU).Early extubation is a cornerstone of fast-track cardiac surgery,and it has been mainly implemented in post-anaesthesia care *** a nurse-led extubation protocol may lead to reduced extubation *** To investigate results of the implementation of a nurse-led protocol for early extubation after elective cardiac surgery,aiming at higher extubation rates by the third postoperative *** A single centre prospective study in an 18-bed,consultant-led Cardiothoracic ICU,with a 1:1 nurse-to-patient *** a 3-wk period,the protocol was implemented with:(1)Structured teaching sessions at nurse handover and at bed-space(all staff received teaching,over 90%were exposed at least twice;(2)Email;and(3)Laminated sheets at *** compared“standard practice”and“intervention”periods before and after the protocol implementation,measuring extubation rates at several time-points from the third until the 24th postoperative *** Of 122 cardiac surgery patients admitted to ICU,13 were excluded as early weaning was considered ***,109 patients were included,54 in the standard and 55 in the intervention *** of surgical interventions and baseline left ventricular function were similar between *** the third to the 12th post-operative hour,the intervention group displayed a higher proportion of patients extubated compared to the standard ***,results were significant only at the sixth hour(58%vs 37%,P=0.04),and not different at the third hour(13%vs 6%,P=0.33).From the 12th post-operative hour time-point onward,extubation rates became almost identical between groups(83%in standard vs 83%in intervention period).CONCLUSION The implementation of a nurse-led protocol for early extubation after cardiac surgery in ICU may gradually lead to higher rates of early extubation.

Revisiting the X-Chromosome Inactivation and Its Impact on Female Longevity

X-chromosome inactivation is the genetic mechanism by which X-linked gene expression is equalized between the male and female genders of all placental mammal species. Given that the probability of mutant X-linked allele expression decreases as a result of the inactivation, it has been proposed that females have biological advantages relative to males. These advantages have grabbed the attention of the scientific community in recent years and have focused it on this topic and its clinical implications. To shed some new light on this intriguing phenomenon, this article reviews the most relevant molecular events involved in this process. These events include the role of Xist, the selection mechanism for future X-chromosome inactivation, the age-related inactivation skewing, and the relationship between inactivation and the emergence of X-linked diseases, possible treatments, and longevity.

Massive haemorrhage in liver transplantation:Consequences,prediction and management

From its inception the success of liver transplantation has been associated with massive blood loss. Massive transfusion is classically defined as > 10 units of red blood cells within 24 h, but describing transfusion rates over a shorter period of time may reduce the potential for survival bias. Both massive haemorrhage and transfusion are associated with increased risk of mortality and morbidity(need for dialysis/surgical site infection) following liver transplantation although causality is difficult to prove due to the observational design of most trials. The blood loss associated with liver transplantation is multifactorial. Portal hypertension secondary to cirrhosis results in extensive collateral circulation, which can bleed during hepatectomy particular if portal pressures are increased. Avoiding volume loading and maintenance of a low central venous pressure together with the use of vasopressors have been shown to reduce blood loss and transfusion during liver transplantation, but may increase the risk of renal impairment post-operatively. Coagulation defects may be present pre-transplant, but haemostasis is often re-balanced due to a deficit in both proand anti-coagulation factors. Further derangement of haemostasis may develop in the anhepatic and neohepatic phases due to absent hepatic metabolic function, hyperfibrinolysis and platelet sequestration in the donor liver. Point-of-care tests of coagulation such as the viscoelastic tests rotation thromboelastometry/thromboelastometry allow and more accurate and rapid assessment of these derangements in coagulation and guide the use of factor replacement and antifibrinolytics. Transfusion protocols guided by these tests have been shown to reduce transfusion rates compared with conventional coagulation tests, but have not shownimprovements in mortality or morbidity. AIM： To determine whether different intravitreal doses of quinupristin/dalfopristin lead to electroretinographic or histological changes in the rabbit retina over one month period after injection. METHODS： Eighteen New Zealand white rabbits were divided into three treatment groups （groups 1 to 3） and different intravitreal doses of quinupristin/dalfopristin were tested in each group. The right eye was injected with the drug and the left eye received intravitreal injection of 5% dextrose water and served as control eye. The doses delivered to each group were 0.1 mg/0.1 mL, 1 mg/0.1 mL and 10 mg/0.1 mL. Simultaneous, bilateral, dark-adapted electroretinography and clinical images of both eyes were obtained in all groups before injection （baseline） and after 7, 14, 21 and 28d, followed by enucleation for histological examination. RESULTS： Subjects in the group 1 showed no signs of toxicity in the electroretinogram when compared with groups 2 and 3 （Kruskall-Wallis test, P=0.000）. By day 7, no electrical response to light stimuli was recorded in the treated eyes in groups 2 and 3, consistent with severe damage due to retinal toxicity. Light microscopy revealedno significant histopathological changes in the group 1, while rabbits in groups 2 and 3 had signs of granulomatous inflammation in most cases. CONCLUSION： Intravitreal 0.1 mg/0.1 mL doses of quinupristin/dalfopristin do not lead to electroretinographic or histological signs of retinal toxicity compared with 1 mg/0.1 mL and 10 mg/O.1 mL in this rabbit model.

Magnetic, Structural and Morphological Characterization of Sr<sub>2</sub>GdRuO<sub>6</sub>Double Perovskite

We report structural, morphological and magnetic properties of the Sr2GdRuO6 compound, which is used as precursor oxide in the production process of RuSr2GdCu2O8 superconducting ruthenocuprates. The crystalline structure was studied by X-ray diffraction and Rietveld refinement. Results reveal that material crystallizes in a monoclinic double perovskite, space group P21/n (#14). Scanning Electron Microscopy experiments on samples show homogeneous granular morphology with grain size from 3 up to 7 μm. Semiquantitative analysis of composition was performed by the Energy Dispersive X-ray technique. Experimental results are 98% in agreement with the theoretical stoichiometry. Curves of magnetization as a function of temperature exhibit an antiferromagnetic-like behaviour, with Néel temperature TN=15.3 K and magnetic effective moment 8.72μB.
