Comparison of Three Experimental Models for Rat Osteoarthritis Induction

Background: Osteoarthritis is a slowly progressive and debilitating disease with high prevalence in adult population. Knee is one of the joints most affected by this disorder. There are several models for animals’ osteoarthritis induction, however it is not identified any paper that compares these techniques. The present study was aimed to define the most appropriate model for rats osteoarthritis induction. Material and Methods: 40 Wistar rats were distributed into 4 groups of 10 animals each: normality group (NG);meniscectomy group (MG);quinolone group (QG) and iodoacetate group (IG). Radiographic images of the rat’s knees were analyzed as well as the amount of chondrocytes in the epiphyseal and articular cartilage. Results: In the radiographic analysis, there was a low correlation between the raters. Regarding the amount of chondrocytes in the epiphyseal cartilage, it was noticed that the IG and QG groups had fewer chondrocytes than NG, in contrast to MG that reported similar results to normality (p > 0.05). There was no significant difference between IG and QG groups (p > 0.05). Regarding the amount of chondrocytes in articular cartilage, it was noticed that the IG group showed fewer chondrocytes than NG (p 0.05). There was no significant difference between QG and MG groups (p > 0.05). Conclusion: Intraarticular injection of iodoacetate in rats is the model with greatest effect on reduction of chondrocytes amount.

Species of the genus Erythrina are frequently used as ornamental plants and in projects to restore degraded areas. Also, extracts from its shoots and stems are popularly used as a herbal medicine with validated activity on the central nervous system. The objective of this study was to evaluate E. mulungu and E. velutina seed germination and seedling development potential aiming commercial scale production of those species. Seeds stored for one or twelve months at 10°C ± 2°C were sown in sand, soil or Plantmax? substrates and evaluated for germination and seedling development. Subsequently, seedlings sprouted in Plantmax? were transferred to polyethylene bags and kept in greenhouse, under direct sunlight for plant development (plant height, stem diameter and root length pivoting) evaluations. Four-month-old plantlets were transplanted to the field and after a period of one year the collar diameter and shoot height (of each plant were measured. Seed germination rates of both species grown in soil and in Plantmax? were significantly high (over 80%). Storing seeds for 1 month did not inhibit germination. However, seeds stored for twelve months had germination reduced by more than a quarter. The development of plants in greenhouse and in the field was satisfactory, indicating the viability of producing E. mulungu and E. velutina on a commercial scale, in order to meet the expanding market demand for herbal medicines.

This study aimed to evaluate energy and nutritional densities, water, carbon and ecological footprints, cost, of omnivorous and vegan main courses served in a university restaurant in the city of Rio de Janeiro. A cross-sectional, analytical study was conducted with 40 main dish-type preparations, 20 of which are omnivorous and 20 vegans, served at lunch, to assess energy and nutritional densities, carbon, water and ecological footprints and cost of preparations. We propose a healthy and sustainable preparation index (HSPI) to evaluate from the list, the best preparation options considering the nutritional quality combined with the impact that the food causes on the environment. Preparations with the highest HSPI were considered the best options because they have a good relation between the nutritional profile and the environmental impact. Results: Regarding energy (ED), nutritional (ND) densities and water, carbon and ecological footprints, omnivorous preparations presented much higher values when compared to the vegan ones. The omnivorous preparations had the highest average cost (R$ 3.44). Regarding the HSPI, vegan preparations showed better rates than omnivorous preparations. Food services should promote healthy and sustainable choices by offering menus with low energy density preparations, high nutritional density, and low environmental impact, considering local realities and customer needs. Conclusion: This study was able to evaluate the best preparation options, considering the nutritional profile and the food impact on the environment, using health and sustainable indicators. Obtaining indicators of preparations regarding healthiness and sustainability, in practice, translates environmental aspects in menu planning, which contribute to changes in food consumption patterns in food services, in addition to contributing to the reduction of the environmental impact. BACKGROUND The etiology of inflammatory bowel disease(IBD)is unknown,but it is believed to be *** hygiene hypothesis proposes that better hygiene conditions would lead to less infectious disease during childhood and favor the development of immune-mediated *** To test the hygiene hypothesis in IBD by assessing the environmental risk factors associated with IBD development in different regions of Brazil with diverse socioeconomic development *** A multicenter case-control study was carried out with 548 Crohn’s disease(CD)and 492 ulcerative colitis(UC)outpatients and 416 healthy controls,from six IBD centers within different Brazilian states at diverse socioeconomic development stages.A semi-structured questionnaire with 87 socioeconomic and environmental questions was *** regression model was created to assess the odds ratio(OR)with P value and 95%confidence intervals(CI).RESULTS Predictive variables for both diseases(CD and UC)were women[odd ratios(OR)=1.31;OR=1.69],low monthly family income(OR=1.78;OR=1.57),lower number of cohabitants(OR=1.70;OR=1.60),absence of vaccination(OR=3.11;OR=2.51),previous history of bowel infections(OR=1.78;OR=1.49),and family history of IBD(OR=5.26;OR=3.33).Associated risk factors for CD were age(18-39 years)(OR=1.73),higher educational level(OR=2.22),absence of infectious childhood diseases(OR=1.99).The UC predictive variables were living in an urban area(OR=1.62),inadequate living conditions(OR=1.48)and former smokers(OR=3.36).Appendectomy was a risk factor for CD(OR=1.58)with inverse association with UC(OR=4.79).Consumption of treated and untreated water was associated with risk of CD(OR=1.38)and UC(OR=1.53),*** This is the first examining environmental exposures as risk factors for inflammatory bowel disease in *** of the variables associated with disease risk support the role of the hygiene hypothesis in IBD development.

Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser Syndrome (MRKH) is a rare disease characterized by total or partial vagina agenesis, karyotype 46, XX with normal secondary sexual characters. Still, it is the second leading cause of primary amenorrhea. The absence of obvious signs and symptoms often causes the syndrome to be diagnosed only after puberty. The case presented here highlights exactly this difficulty of early diagnosis, which meets the objective of the study, and is precisely to provide reliable material that facilitates the diagnosis and management of patients with MRKH syndrome.
