Duodenitis in Systemic Autoimmune Diseases: Pathologist Perspective

Aims: To study the histomorphology of duodenitis associated with systemic autoimmune diseases with clinicopathologic correlation. Patients and Methods: This is a descriptive prospective study. Fifteen patients of autoimmune diseases with duodenitis were included. Informed consent was taken. Histomorphological parameters studied were villous architecture, crypt architecture, intraepithelial lymphocyte (IEL) count per 100 enterocytes, villous tip IEL count per 20 enterocytes were counted, inflammatory cells in lamina propria—lymphocytes, neutrophils, eosinophils, epithelioid cells. Statistical analysis was done using IBM-SPSS software version 21. Results: Fifteen cases of duodenitis associated with autoimmune diseases included 6 patients of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), 5 of rheumatoid arthritis, one each of ankylosing spondylitis, systemic sclerosis, dermatomyositis and seronegative reactive arthritis. All these cases were serologically proven. Only 3 (20%) patients had mild villous blunting. Six patients (46.7%) had increased IEL counts. The range of IELs was 8 - 30, mean ± SD was 14 ± 7.6. Range of villous tip IELs was 0 - 8 with mean ± SD of 3.45 ± 2.56. Six patients (46.7%) had increased IEL counts but only 3 patients (20%) had increased villous tip IELs. All patients had moderate increase in lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate in lamina propria. Eosinophils in lamina propria were increased in 46.7% cases.? Conclusion: One of the causes for malabsorptive conditions in adult population in South India is found to be duodenitis associated with autoimmune conditions. We conclude that a combination of clinical, serological, endoscopic and histopathologic features is crucial in arriving at a correct diagnosis.

Influence of deposition rate on the structural, optical and electrical properties of electron beam evaporated SnO_2 thin films for transparent conducting electrode applications

The role of deposition rate in the structural, optical and electrical properties of SnOthin films deposited by electron beam evaporation method is investigated by varying the deposition powers viz. 50, 75, and 100 *** structural characterization of the films is done by X-ray diffraction(XRD) technique. The surface morphology of the films is studied by scanning electron microscopy(SEM). Rutherford back scattering(RBS) measurements revealed the thickness of the films ranging from 200 nm to 400 and also a change in the concentration of oxygen vacancies which is found to be the maximum in the film deposited at the lowest deposition rate. Optical absorption spectrum is recorded using the UV–V is spectroscopy and the films are found to be transparent in nature. A shift in the absorption edge is observed and is attributed to a different level of allowed energy states in conduction band minimum. The Hall effect and electrical measurements show a variation in the carrier concentrations, mobility and resistivity of the films. In order to explore a better compromise in electrical and optical properties for transparent electrode applications, skin depths calculations are also done to find the optimized values of carrier concentration and mobility.

Visceral leishmaniasis(VL)is a serious parasitic disease causing considerable mortality and major disability in the Indian *** is most neglected tropical disease,particularly in terms of new drug development for the lack of financial *** elimination campaign has been running in India since 2005 that aim to reduce the incidence of VL to below 1 per 10,000 people at sub-district *** of the major components in this endeavor is reducing transmission through early case detection followed by complete *** progress has been made during the recent years in the area of VL treatment,and the VL elimination initiatives have already saved many lives by deploying them effectively in the endemic ***,many challenges remain to be overcome including availability of drugs,cost of treatment(drugs and hospitalization),efficacy,adverse effects,and growing parasite ***,better emphasis on implementation research is urgently needed to determine how best to deliver existing interventions with available anti-leishmanial *** is essential that the new treatment options become truly accessible,not simply available in endemic areas so that they may promote healing and save *** this review,we highlight the recent advancement and challenges in current treatment options for VL in disease endemic area,and discuss the possible strategies to improve the therapeutic outcome.

Isolation of enriched-yielders and fed-batch production of alkaline protease from the newly isolated <i>Bacillus</i>sp. BHA

An alkalophilc and thermophilic Bacillus sp. BHA that produced a thermostable alkaline protease was isolated from decaying protein substrates. The isolate was found to grow in pH range 7 - 11 with an optimum pH 9.0 and temperature up to 55℃. The activity of alkaline protease of Bacillus sp. BHA (68.98 APU/ml) was found higher than the standard strains of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens MTCC 610 (8.98 APU/ml) and Bacillus subtilis MTCC 8349 (12.14 APU/ml, used in this study, and was comparable (68.98 APU/ml, equivalent to 30.38 APU/mg) to the activity of the commercially produced standard protease procured from Novo Nordisk, Denmark (30.35 APU/mg). Hence, the proteolytic activity produced by this isolate was further investigated in batch and fed-batch process. Sucrose was the best carbon source for the production of protease activity by that isolate. Different organic nitrogen sources (casein, peptone and beef extract) at 1% (w/v) with varying levels of sucrose (1% - 4% w/v) initially repress enzyme synthesis. The duration and extent of repression decreased with increased concentration of sucrose. Maximum protease activity was found in basal medium with 4% (w/v) sucrose and 1% (w/v) yeast extract. Yeast-extract was thought to be an inducer of enzyme synthesis. Further, the basal medium was unique with respect to the enzyme production, as protease production was growth associated with the peak enzyme production being detected at the time of maximum growth. Interestingly, a rise in 34.2% (104.86 APU/ml) of protease activity was detected at incubation temperature of 50℃ and when culture filtrate was assayed at 60℃, signifying a high temperature stability of the produced protease by this isolate. Additional studies on the enzyme characterization were resulted in recognition of highly significant properties of the activity towards casein at pH 9.0 and stability at high temperature with retention of 96% the enzyme activity at 60℃. 目的:比较扩散峰度成像、扩散张量成像及扩散加权成像在良恶性脑膜瘤的鉴别效能。方法:连续收集72名组织病理学上确诊为脑膜瘤的患者。运用独立样本t检验比较良恶性脑膜瘤肿瘤实性部分标准化的平均峰度(MK)、径向峰度(KR)、轴向峰度(KA)、各向异性(FA)、平均扩散率(MD)和表观扩散系数(ADC)等扩散参数值的差异。采用受试者操作特征(ROC)曲线筛选最佳诊断参数。结果:标准化后DKI值(MK 0.013,KR 0.015和KA 0.014)在鉴别良恶性脑膜瘤上明显优于其他扩散参数,包括MD,FA和ADC。标准化后的KA,MK和KR值对鉴别良恶性脑膜瘤具有良好的诊断效能。结论:扩散峰度值能客观的反映脑膜瘤的超微结构改变,较其它扩散参数更能有效的鉴别良恶性脑膜瘤。
