Background: We hypothesized: 1) resected pulmonary typical carcinoid (TC) will show a favorable clinical pattern compared to other bronchopulmonary neuroendocrine tumors (BPNETs);and 2) Atypical carcinoid (AC) and large-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC) patients will have similar outcomes. Methods: The Surveillance Epidemiology and End Result database was queried to compare demographics and tumor specific variables in patients undergoing resection for TC, AC, LCNEC and small cell lung cancer (SCLC) from 2001 to 2006. Results: Similar to LCNEC, AC patients had greater incidence of histologic positive lymph nodes compared to TC (P howed a mean survival of 40.0 ± 1.9 months for SCLC, 46.2 ± 2.2 months for LCNEC, 58.3 ± 2.3 months for AC, and 70.2 ± 0.2 months for TC tumors. TC patients demonstrated favorable survival, and SCLC patients poorer survival, compared to AC and LNEC patients (P histology that exhibits clinical behavior distinct from TC. AC tumors should be staged, and treated with stage appropriate therapeutic strategies similar to other non-small cell lung cancers.

A 62-year-old female complained of vision loss following multiple abdominal surgeries for mesenteric ischemia. The patient’s visual acuity was no light perception (NLP) in the right eye and hand motion (hM) at 1’ in the left eye. Both pupils were unreactive and no relative afferent pupillary defect was noted. Anterior segment and fundus examination were unremarkable. T1 and T2 weighted MRI imaging of the brain was normal but diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) revealed areas of bright signal within both intraorbital optic nerves, confirming the diagnosis of posterior ischemic optic neuropathy.

A series of sulpha/substituted derivatives of phenyl azo-1,2-diazole have been synthesized and tested as an anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial activity in mature albino rats hind paw by taking Diclofenac sodium as standard. N1-(4-hydroxy benzoyl)-3-methyl-5-phenyl-4(N-4-chlorophenylazo)-1,2-diazole is synthesized by a two-step process. In the first step, synthesis of N1-4-chlorophenyl hydrazono-1-methyl-3-phenyl propane-1,3-dione by the reciprocal action of 1-methyl-5-phenylpropane-1,3-dione and diazonium salt solution of phenyl-chloride interacts with 4-hydroxybenzoic acid hydrazide to form the final compound. These diazoles, the heterocyclic compounds which contained electron withdrawing groups, were screened for analgesic activity by acetic acid induced writing method, and for anti-inflammatory activity carried on carrageenan-induced paw edema. The synthesized substituted Chlorophenylazo-1,2-diazole nucleus exhibited significant anti-bacterial, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory activity, muscle relaxing and moderate activity in anti-proliferative studies.

A simple and effective method for the synthesis of nano-crystalline PZT spatulae has been re-ported near MPB via a new Solution-Ignition Synthesis route and has been characterized by FT-IR, XRD, TG/DTG/DTA and SEM techniques. X-ray line broadening and Scherrer formula show crystallite size to be^20 nm. Densities of nano-crystalline spatulae of PZT in pellet form made by using 2% PVA and without PVA have been found to be 5.35 and 7.51 gm/cm3 respec-tively compared to the theoretical value of 7.78 gm/cm3. Dielectric constants of 83 and 227 of these spatulae with dielectric loss 0.118 and 0.0609 at 1 Mhz and a high resistivity value of 3.043 * 107 Ω cm for PZT pellets made without PVA suggest these nano-crystalline PZT spatu-lae to be the potential candidates for high fre-quency applications.

Clinical outcomes of endoscopic management of pancreatic fluid collections in cirrhotics vs non-cirrhotics: A comparative study

BACKGROUND Endoscopic management of symptomatic pancreatic fluid collections (PFCs) using self-expandable metal stents (SEMS) placement has emerged as an innovative therapeutic approach with excellent efficacy, safety, and relatively few adverse outcomes. however, their use has not been studied in patients with cirrhosis. Cirrhotics tend to be considered less than optimal candidates due to concern for portal hypertension and coagulopathy related complications. AIM To compare the efficacy and safety of using SEMS for drainage of symptomatic PFCs in cirrhotic vs non-cirrhotic patients. METhODS We conducted a retrospective comparative analysis of patients with symptomatic PFCs [pancreatic pseudocyst (PP) or walled-off necrosis (WON)] who underwent endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-guided placement of fully covered self-expandable metals stents or lumen-apposing self-expandable metal stents. All patients were followed clinically until resolution of PFCs or death. Definition:(1) Technical success was defined as successful placement of SEMS;and (2) Clinical success was defined as complete resolution of the PFCs without additional interventions including interventional radiology or surgery. Of these, 58 non cirrhotic patients underwent plastic stent insertion for management of PFC and 30 patients, 5 with cirrhosis and 25 without cirrhosis, underwent EUS-guided transmural drainage with SEMS, including 18 (60%) PP and 12 (40%) WON. AIM: To study the effect of anti-copper treatment for survival of hepatic cells expressing different ATP7 B mutations in cell culture. METhODS: The most common Wilson disease(WD) mutations p.h1069 Q, p.R778 L and p.C271*, found in the ATP7 B gene encoding a liver copper transporter, were studied. The mutations represent major genotypes of the United States and Europe, China, and India, respectively. A human hepatoma cell line previously established to carry a knockout of ATP7 B was used to stably express WD mutants. m RNA and protein expression of mutant ATP7 B, survival of cells, apoptosis, and protein trafficking were ***: Low temperature increased ATP7 B protein expression in several mutants. Intracellular ATP7 B localization was significantly impaired in the mutants. Mutants were classified as high, moderate, and no survival based on their viability on exposure to toxic copper. Survival of mutant p.h1069 Q and to a lesser extent p.C271* improved by D-penicillamine(DPA) treatment, while mutant p.R778 L showed a pronounced response to zinc(Zn) treatment. Overall, DPA treatment resulted in higher cell survival as compared to Zn treatment; however, only combined Zn + DPA treatment fully restored cell viability. CONCLUSION: The data indicate that the basic impact of a genotype might be characterized by analysis of mutant hepatic cell lines.

Synthetic resin, Amberlite XAD-4 was linked covalently with the third generation supramolecule, octa-O-methoxy resorcin [4] arene through -N=N-group to form chelating resin, which has been characterized and effectively used for the separation and preconcentration of metal ions such as Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II) and Cd(II). Critical parameters such as ph, flow rate, sorption capacity, breakthrough studies, distribution coefficient, preconcentration factor, concentration of eluting agents responsible for quantitative extraction of metal ions were optimized. The synthesized resin showed good binding affinity towards Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II) and Cd(II) under selective ph conditions. Good breakthrough capacity and fast exchange kinetics of the resin lead to effective separation of metal ions from their binary and ternary mixture by column method on the basis of ph and eluting agents. The resin could be reused for about 8 -10 cycles. The proposed method having the analytical data with the relative standard deviation (RSD) 2% and with recoveries of analytes higher than 98%, reflects upon the reproducibility and reliability of the method which has been successfully applied in the separation and determination of Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II) and Cd(II) ions in synthetic, natural and ground water samples.
