Allometric relationships between primary size measures and sapwood area for six common tree species in snow-dependent ecosystems in the Southwest United States

High-elevation,snow-dependent,semiarid ecosystems across southwestern United States are expected to be vulnerable to climate change,including drought and fi re,with implications for various aspects of the water *** that end,much less is known about the dynamics of transpiration,an important component of the water cycle across this *** the individual-tree scale,transpiration is estimated by scaling mean sap fl ux density by the hydroactive sapwood area(SA).SA also remains a key factor in eff ectively scaling individual tree water-use to stand *** across large spatial scales is normally established by relating SA of a few trees to primary size measures,e.g.,diameter at breast height(DBH),tree height(H),or canopy diameter(CD).Considering the importance of SA in scaling transpiration,the primary objective of this study was therefore to establish six species-specifi c(aspen,maple,white fi r,ponderosa pine,Douglas fi r,Englemann spruce)allometric relationships between SA and three primary size measures(DBH,CD,or H)across two high-elevation,snow-dependent,semiarid ecosystems in New Mexico and *** on multiple statistical criteria(coeffi cient of determination,index of agreement,Nash–Sutcliff e effi-ciency)and ease of measurement in the forest,we identifi ed DBH as the primary independent variable for estimating SA across all *** on group regression analysis,we found allometric relationships to be signifi cantly(p<0.05)diff erent for the same species(ponderosa pine,Douglas-fi r)across diff erent ***,our allometric relationships provide a valuable database for estimating transpiration at diff erent spatial scales from sap fl ow data in some of our most vulnerable ecosystems.

Rare Occurrence of Primary Chest Wall Bone Tumours

Primary tumors involving the bony skeleton of the chest wall are uncommon. After a retrospective review of the histopathology archive at our institution from Oct 08 to Mar 09 we found three malignant neoplasms affecting the rib, clavicle and the costal cartilages, one mesenchymal chondrosarcoma, one case of clear cell chondrosarcoma and an aggressive osteoblastoma each having distinctive histological diagnosis. Our limited experience in the occurrence of primary chest wall tumors showed that there are occurrences of rare bony lesions. A strong clinical suspicion, clinico-radiological correlation and histopathological confirmation are required for proper evaluation.

Clinicopathological Correlation of Primary Malignant Bone Tumors—An Observational Study

Background: Primary malignant tumors arising from bone are uncommon but important malignant neoplasms which account for 0.2% of all primary cancers in adults and approximately 5% of all childhood malignancies. Aim: No comprehensive surveillance data about primary malignant bone tumors is available from this region of West Bengal in the literature. An attempt is undertaken to correlate clinicopathological findings, both histological & cytological features of primary bone tumours. Method: This observational study of clinical presentation was corroborated with cytology and histopathology of 67 cases of primary malignant bone tumors in 2005-2007 in a tertiary health care centre. Results: Among the primary malignant tumors, 39 cases (58.20%) were male and 28 (41.80%) were female. Sixty one lesions (91%) were located in the long bones and 6 (9%) involving flat and short bones. Osteosarcomas are found to be the predominant primary malignant bone tumors (44.77%), followed by Ewing’s sarcomas (20.89%), chondrosarcomas (13.43%), high grade giant cell tumor, and plasmacytoma (5.97%). Predilection for male (M: F 2:1) found in both osteosarcoma and chondrosarcoma, but it was reverse in cases of Ewing’s sarcomas. Conclusion: Osteosarcoma is the most common around knee joint and chondrosarcoma is frequent in long bones in this region. We made an attempt to correlate FNAC findings with the histopathology and it was seen that overall sensitivity of FNAC of primary malignant bone tumors was 56.71%.

Synthesis of plant-based biogenic jarosite nanoparticles using Azadirachta indica and Eucalyptus gunni leaf extracts and its application in Fenton degradation of dicamba

Bio-jarosite,an iron mineral synthesized biologically using bacteria,is a substitute for iron catalysts in the Fenton oxidation of organic *** nanocatalysts have been widely used as Fenton catalysts because they have a larger surface area than ordinary catalysts,are highly recyclable,and can be treated *** study aimed to explore the catalytic properties of bio-jarosite iron nanoparticles syn-thesized with green methods using two distinct plant species:Azadirachta indica and Eucalyptus *** focus was on the degradation of dicamba via Fenton *** synthesized nanoparticles exhibited different particle size,shape,surface area,and chemical composition *** particles were effective in removing dicamba,with removal efficiencies of 96.8%for *** bio-jarosite iron nano-particles(ABFeNPs)and 93.0%for *** bio-jarosite iron nanoparticles(EBFeNPs)within 120 min of *** the catalyst dosage by 0.1 g/L resulted in 7.6%and 43.0%increases in the dicamba removal efficiency for EBFeNPs and ABFeNPs with rate constants of 0.025 min^(-1) and 0.023 min^(-1),respectively,confrming their catalytic ***,the high efficiency of both catalysts was demonstrated through five consecutive cycles of linear pseudo-first-order Fenton oxidation reactions.

Co-seismic surface displacement of the June 21, 2022 M_(W)6 Khōst,Afghanistan earthquake from InSAR observations

A robust estimation of the earthquake location, seismic moment, and fault geometry is essential for objective seismic hazard assessment. Seismic events in a remote location, specifically in the absence of seismic and GNSS networks, can be investigated effectively using the In SAR-based technique. This study adopts the Differential Interferometric SAR(DIn SAR) technique to quantify the co-seismic surface displacement caused by the June 21, 2022, Khōst M_(W)6 earthquake that occurred along the western plate boundary between the Indian and Eurasian plate. The interferograms show that the maximum surface deformation occurred on the northwest and southwest of the fault line. From coherence, the Line of Sight(LOS) displacement, and the co-seismic surface displacement analysis, it has been observed that surface deformation was most pronounced in the southwest region of the fault line, and the surface has moved to the opposite direction along the fault line, which indicates a sinistral slightly oblique strike-slip movement. This In SAR-based observation appears consistent with the seismic waveforms derived from co-seismic surface displacements. Further, it has been argued that the slip deficit accumulated during the period of the last about 48 years along the frontal region of the northward extension of the Suleiman range and associated fault zone is qualitatively estimated at about 1.5 m, which is consistent with the seismic waveforms derived finite slip model.

Diagnosing upper tract urothelial carcinoma: A review of the role of diagnostic ureteroscopy and novel developments over last two decades

Objective: The role of ureteroscopy in the diagnosis of upper tract urothelial carcinoma is yet to be fully determined. We aimed to provide an up to date evaluation of its role and the emerging technologies in the ***: A literature search of the last two decades (from 24th May, 2001 to 24th May, 2021) was carried out identifying 147 papers for potential inclusion within this narrative ***: Diagnostic ureteroscopy is undeniably useful in its ability to visualise and biopsy indeterminate lesions, and to risk stratify malignant lesions that may be suitable for kidney sparing surgery. However, an increased risk of intravesical recurrence following nephroureterectomy when a prior diagnostic ureteroscopy has been performed, inadequate sampling at biopsy, complications from the procedure, and difficult ureteric access are all potential drawbacks. Furthermore, whilst generally an accurate diagnostic procedure, it risks missing carcinoma in-situ lesions. Despite this, evidence shows that routine use of ureteroscopy changes the management of patients in a large proportion of cases, preventing unnecessary surgery or facilitating kidney sparing surgery. The overall rate of complications is low, and improved biopsy techniques and the use of tissue biomarkers for improved staging and grading are encouraging. The risks of delays to definitive management and post-ureteroscopy intravesical recurrence do not seem to affect survival, and trials are in progress to determine whether intravesical therapy can mitigate the latter. Further promising techniques are being investigated to improve shortcomings, particularly in relation to improved diagnosis of carcinoma in situ and preoperative ***: Ureteroscopy has a role in the diagnosis of upper tract malignancy, though whether it should be used routinely is yet to be determined.
