How parents' education and working status affect the nutrition and immunization status of preschool children in India

Objective:The aim of the paper is to see how educational and working status of the parents affect the nutritional and immunization status of preschool children in India.Methods:We have used data of more than 24 000 preschool children spread over different states in India.The data were collected by National Family Health Survey(NFHS-2) in 1998-99.For assessing the nutritional status,only the Z-scores of weight-forheight (WHZ) have been computed and for immunization status,it has been seen whether BCG,DpT3,polio3 and measles have been administered.Children who fall below -2SD(-3SD) from median are considered to be moderately(severely) malnourished.Results:According to the NFHS-2 data,70%of children are vaccinated by BCG,50%receive the full course of DpT,54%get all the three dozes of polio and only 42%are protected from measles by vaccination in India.The percentages of moderately and severely wasted children in India are 12.1 and 2.8,respectively.There is a marked regional variation of these percentages.Bivariate and multivariate analysis clearly points to the need of educational status of mothers rather than fathers for proper nutritional and immunization status of preschool children.parents’occupation and working status also have some effect,but not so pronounced as parents’education.Conclusion:The Indian preschool children need particular attention for high risk of wasting and low immunization.The prevalence of malnutrition can be arrested more by improving the mother’s education level rather than their fathers and by raising the standard of living of their house-holds.

Objective:To study the extent of undernutrition at district level and the socio-economic determinants of underweight children aged 0-71 months in West Bengal.Methods:The data were accessed from the Reproductive and Child Health Survey(RCHS-II),which contained information of 7 SSO children and their parents.Information of socio-economic variables about the associated families of these children had also been taken for our study.This study computed weight-for-age z-scores to assess the nutritional status of the children using WHO(2006) reference.Results:The prevalence of underweight varied over the districts.Districts with very high prevalence of underweight children were Murshidabad,Burdwan,purulia,Medinipur, Howrah and South 24 parganas.High prevalent districts for both boys and girls were Jalpaiguri and Coochbihar.Low prevalent districts for both boys and girls were South Dinajpur,Nadia and Kolkata.The percentage of underweight children were more in rural areas among Muslim families with illiterate parents and low standard of living.In Murshidabad,Bankura,Nadia, Medinipur and South 24 parganas districts,i.e.,where prevalence of underweight children were higher,the rural and urban differences were less.The characteristics like religion,parents’ educational status and standard of living index showed significant effect on the children’s weights.Conclusions:public intervention programs on the parent’s education and the standard of living of the households at district level should be given high priority to combat the children’s undernutrition problems so far as weight for age is concerned.

Objective:To search adequate epidemiological data on periodontal conditions for the planning of oral health programs in Indian population,and to determine the prevalence of periodontal diseases,in regards to age and gender of urban and rural population in West Bengal.India. Methods:22 542 subjects aged 15 years onwards,representative of rural and urban areas of West Bengal were examined for their periodontal conditions using the community periodontal index(CpI).Results:Supra and/or sub gingival calculus dominated as the most frequent score (score 2) among males(76.51%) and females(76.58%),which was least affected in young age group and higher in rural population.Severity of highest score were significant(pp and habitation and had independent effects(ppredominantly typeⅡ(Scaling and improved oral hygiene).Conclusions: The severe periodontal condition(Score 2,3 and 4) is observed among rural males in older age group more than its urban counterparts of West Bengal,India.

Implications of future climate change on crop and irrigation water requirements in a semi-arid river basin using CMIp6 GCMs

Agriculture faces risks due to increasing stress from climate change,particularly in semi-arid regions.Lack of understanding of crop water requirement(CWR)and irrigation water requirement(IWR)in a changing climate may result in crop failure and socioeconomic problems that can become detrimental to agriculture-based economies in emerging nations worldwide.previous research in CWR and IWR has largely focused on large river basins and scenarios from the Coupled Model Intercomparison project phase 3(CMIp3)and Coupled Model Intercomparison project phase 5(CMIp5)to account for the impacts of climate change on crops.Smaller basins,however,are more susceptible to regional climate change,with more significant impacts on crops.This study estimates CWRs and IWRs for five crops(sugarcane,wheat,cotton,sorghum,and soybean)in the pravara River Basin(area of 6537 km^(2))of India using outputs from the most recent Coupled Model Intercomparison project phase 6(CMIp6)General Circulation Models(GCMs)under Shared Socio-economic pathway(SSp)245 and SSp585 scenarios.An increase in mean annual rainfall is projected under both scenarios in the 2050s and 2080s using ten selected CMIp6 GCMs.CWRs for all crops may decline in almost all of the CMIp6 GCMs in the 2050s and 2080s(with the exceptions of ACCESS-CM-2 and ACCESS-ESM-1.5)under SSp245 and SSp585 scenarios.The availability of increasing soil moisture in the root zone due to increasing rainfall and a decrease in the projected maximum temperature may be responsible for this decline in CWR.Similarly,except for soybean and cotton,the projected IWRs for all other three crops under SSp245 and SSp585 scenarios show a decrease or a small increase in the 2050s and 2080s in most CMIp6 GCMs.These findings are important for agricultural researchers and water resource managers to implement long-term crop planning techniques and to reduce the negative impacts of climate change and associated rainfall variability to avert crop failure and agricultural losses.

Insecticide resistance status and biochemical mechanisms involved in Aedes mosquitoes: A scoping review

Mosquitoes belonging to the genus Aedes pose a significant threat to human health on a global scenario due to their role in transmission of dengue,chikungunya,zika,and yellow fever.In absence of specific medications and vaccines against these diseases,disease prevention relies on vector control.However,in today’s world,vector control is facing major challenges due to the onset of insecticide resistance in mosquitoes.There are four main mechanisms of insecticide resistance,namely,behavioral resistance,reduced penetration/cuticular resistance,metabolic detoxification,and target site resistance;however,the latter two mechanisms have been studied widely in Aedes mosquitoes.Insecticide resistance in Aedes mosquitoes is widespread throughout the world.This review compiles the degree of insecticide resistance/susceptibility prevailing among different field populations of Aedes mosquitoes worldwide.In addition,the review has detailed the mechanisms providing the resistance phenomenon observed in nature in Aedes mosquitoes.

Role of CYp2E1 gene polymorphisms association with hepatitis risk in Northeast India

AIM:To investigate hepatitis virus, genetic and environmental factors, and their interactions in predisposing patients to liver diseases in Northeast India. METHODS:A total of 104 jaundice patients and 124 community controls were included. Serological analysis was performed by routine enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and nucleic acid testing for hepatitis viruses was done by polymerase chain reaction (pCR), followed by pCR direct sequencing for viral genotyping. Cytochrome p450 2E1 (CYp2E1) polymorphism was studied by pCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism. Nitrite and volatile nitrosamines in indigenous foods consumed routinely by the Northeast Indian ethnic population were estimated by Griess’s reagent and GC-MS, respectively.RESULTS: Hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection was predominantly prevalent (36.5%) in our cohort, followed by hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis E virus (HEV) andhepatitis C virus. HBV genotype D and HEV genotype 1 were the most dominant. CYp2E1 c1/c2 genotype frequency was comparatively higher in alcoholic (pptogenic (p=0.014, OR=8.714) patients, and was associated with significantly higher hepatitis risk (p=0.0.007,OR=6.489). Mutant C allele of Cyp2E1 DraⅠ frequency was comparatively higher in HAV (p=0.006), alcoholic (p =0.003) and cryptogenic (p=0.014) cases, and was associated with overall hepatitis risk (p=0.026, OR=5.083). Indigenous foods, Gundruk, Kharoli, betel leaf and nuts were found to have the highest nitrite content. CONCLUSION: Apart from viral factors, CYp2E1 polymorphism might be associated with increased risk of liver diseases in Northeast India. Indigenous foods that contain nitrite and nitrosamine might be an associated risk factor.

Background:Male infertility poses a growing challenge to the healthcare system,with its prevalence on the rise.Unhealthy lifestyle,food,and addictions such as smoking,alcoholism,etc.accelerate the occurrence.While several approaches are being investigated to prevent and treat this condition,each therapeutic approach has its drawbacks.Traditional medications continue to play a crucial role in the healthcare system.In recent years,there has been a shift towards determining the efficacy of phytochemicals(or,herbal drugs)as remedies.Objective:To evaluate the effect of various herbs,plant,metabolites,or a part of plant in management of non-genetic male infertility.Methods:The male infertility-associated keywords were searched in pubMed,excluding those non-English writen papers.A total of 146 pertinent and closely connected records were included for full reading and inclusion in the systemic evaluation.Results:The manuscript focuses on individual herbal drug components,their active ingredients,their role in improving the condition and quality of life,and decreasing the prevalence of male infertility.Conclusion:Herbal medicinal plants show promising outcomes to treat male infertility.Herbal alternatives are appealing and have regained popularity.The future holds promise for some of these herbal treatments to advance with many showing improved outcomes in males with infertility issues.

A regional profile of AChE activity was noted in the Indian termite queen Odontotermes redemanni with the head recording the higher and body the lower range of activity. The enzyme characteristics such as substrate and temperature optima were more or less similar while pH requirement for optimum AChE activity varied from 7.0 to 7.6 In vitro inhibition of head and body AChE was studied using pure and commercial anticholinesterase compounds. Interestingly, the commercial formulations like Metacid-50 and Carbaryl are potent enough at 1×10^(-8) M to produce 50% in vitro inhibition of AChE of head and body regions within 15 min of preincubation. A 20 min of preincubation (t0.5) was necessary to record 50% in vitro inhibition of AChE with known and pure anticholinesterase compounds such as DFp (3.5×10^(-10)M) and physostigmine (3.6 ×10^(-10)M). It is surmised that (a) the response of the head and body AChE to the commercial formulations of the insecticides may be used as a reliable and sensitive bioindicator of pesticidal contamination of the terrestrial environment and (b) termite control may be successfully done with the application of organophosphate or carbamate compounds.

Rectangular Microstrip Antenna for Symmetrical 3-D Beam Widths for an Efficient Feed of Reflector Antenna and its Quantitative Analysis

A simple rectangular microstrip antenna on low dielectric constant substrate such as air for improved radiation beam performance is theoretically investigated. The conventional patch antenna fabricated on common substrates always produces quite broader E plane pattern compared to its H plane. In the present investigation, the same microstrip antenna is designed on air substrate with a view to develop an efficient feed for parabolic reflector antenna, which shows an excellent radiation pattern with symmetrical 3 dB beam widths at its both E and H plane. The present antenna compared to conventional structure to show its excellence in the beam performance is presented. The complete quantitative analysis to explore such radiation beam characteristics for both the structures (conventional and the present one) is also presented in this paper. An easy and handful relationship between the length of patch antenna and its fringing length for different types of substrate is established in the background of 3 dB beam widths. The proposed idea has been verified through a commercial software package for a patch operating in X band and a concrete physical insight into the phenomenon is developed.

Surface plasmon oscillations in a semi-bounded semiconductor plasma

We study the dispersion properties of surface plasmon（Sp） oscillations in a semi-bounded semiconductor plasma with the effects of the Coulomb exchange（CE） force associated with the spin polarization of electrons and holes as well as the effects of the Fermi degenerate pressure and the quantum Bohm potential.Starting from a quantum hydrodynamic model coupled to the poisson equation,we derive the general dispersion relation for surface plasma waves.previous results in this context are recovered.The dispersion properties of the surface waves are analyzed in some particular cases of interest and the relative influence of the quantum forces on these waves are also studied for a nano-sized Ga As semiconductor plasma.It is found that the CE effects significantly modify the behaviors of the Sp waves.The present results are applicable to understand the propagation characteristics of surface waves in solid density plasmas.
