Assessment of Above-and Below-Ground Carbon Pools in a Tropical Dry Deciduous Forest Ecosystem of Bhopal, India

This study estimated 18.35 Mg C/ha in standing biomass of natural forest and 15 Mg C/ha in Hardwickia binata Roxb. plantation in a tropical dry deciduous forest located in the capital city of Madhya Pradesh. The study area of Indian Institute of Forest Management(IIFM), Bhopal,resembled a degraded dry scrubland in 1988 and for over about three decades, the degraded forest recovered remarkably, and ecological processes evolved favorably with canopy cover reaching over 60% in some patches and about 50% in general at most part of the campus. The study was conducted in 18 randomly laid plots in natural forest and over one-acre(0.405-ha) plantation area of Hardwickia binata for assessing the above-ground biomass, below-ground biomass and subsequent carbon content. The lower-diameter classes accounted for the maximum above-ground biomass, basal area and tree density. The forest is predominantly occupied by Leucaena leucocephala, an exotic tree species which showed higher standing biomass carbon storage of 3.79 Mg C/ha followed by Holoptelea integrifolia(2.11 Mg C/ha), Azadirachta indica(1.29 Mg C/ha),Gardenia latifolia(1.26 Mg C/ha) and Lannea coromandelica(1.24 Mg C/ha) besides Hardwickia binata plantation(15 Mg C/ha). It is recommended to plant and promote local native tree species in the urban forests of tropical dry deciduous nature as a means to mitigate climate change effects.

Evaluation of regression algorithms for estimating leaf area index and canopy water content from water stressed rice canopy reflectance

Optical remote sensing(RS)with robust algorithms is needed for accurate assessment of crop canopy *** intensive studies on algorithms,their performance using RS needs to be *** evaluated five different algorithms(partial-least-squares regression(PLSR),support vector regression(SVR),random forest regression(RFR),locally-weighted-PLSR(PLSRLW)and PLSR with feature selection(PLSRFS))for rapid assessment of leaf area index(LAI)and canopy water content(CWC)for rice canopies using canopy reflectance spectra over visible to short-wave infrared *** pooled datasets of LAI(600)and CWC(480)were collected from two replicated field experiments during 2014–15 and 2015–16 rice growing *** performance of each algorithm was evaluated using coefficient of determination(R^(2)).Results showed that PLSRLW performed more accurately than other algorithms with R^(2) values 0.77 and 0.66 for LAI and CWC,*** also used a bootstrapping approach to generate a kernel density estimator of root mean squared error values for each *** results suggested that the improvement in prediction accuracy of LAI and CWC can be achieved if a suitable algorithm is selected by assigning higher weights to calibration samples,which has similar canopy structure as the test *** of the canopy spectral data results large error values in test dataset,therefore the use of entire season canopy spectral data should be used for model calibration.

Central Asia has long emerged as a hotspot for both the regional and extra-regional powers for two main reasons:its geopolitical location in the middle of Eurasia between Europe,South Asia,the Middle East,Russia and China,and their abundant and mostly unexplored natural *** on huge untapped hydrocarbon potentials the Central Asian geographical entity in recent years has offered enormous opportunity and appeal for global countries and emerged as a grand chessboard for regional and extra-regional *** is one such new pole in the new great game without which any geopolitical and geo-economic debate on Central Asia would be *** this prelude,this article attempts to analyse China's rise in Central Asia and its strategies to strengthen its position in the heartland region by discarding the much-hyped great game thesis and argues that China’s rise is unparallel and unmatched as testified by the recent Belt and Road Initiative of Beijing.
