Increases in the treatment of water to meet the growing water demand ultimately result in unmanageable quantities of residuals,the handling,and disposal of which is a major environmental ***,research into beneficial reuse of water treatment residuals continues *** study investigated the applicability of lime-iron sludge for phosphate adsorption by fixed-bed column ***-scale experiments were conducted at varying flow rates and bed *** and empirical models(Thomas,Yan,Bohart-Adams,Yoon-Nelson,and Wolboroska)as well as artificial intelligence techniques(Artificial neural network(ANN)and Adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system(ANFIs))were used to simulate experimental breakthrough curves and predict column *** in flow rate resulted in reduced adsorption ***,adsorption capacity was not affected by bed *** was superior in predicting breakthrough curves and predicted breakthrough times with high accuracy(R^2>0.9962).Na OH(0.5 mol·L^-1)was successfully used to regenerate the adsorption *** nine cyclic adsorption/desorption runs,only a marginal decrease in adsorption and desorption efficiencies of 10%and 8%respectively was *** same regenerate Na OH solution was reused for all desorption *** nine cycles the eluent desorbed a total of 1550 mg phosphate exhibiting potential for further reuse.

The Effects of Zinc sulfate on the in Vitro Digestibility of Feeds in Cervids

The captive white-tailed deer industry has an estimated impact of 1.6 billion UsD in the state of Texas alone. However, nutritional requirements for cervids are determined through research based on sheep and goats. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of zinc on differences in dry matter digestibility in vitro for white-tailed does (Odocoileus virginianus). Deer (n = 2) were ethically harvested, rumens were collected, and placed into a cooler containing warm water. Rumen contents were agitated, and fluid was filtered using cheese cloth while applying CO2. Fluid was placed into four separate incubator jars with filter bags containing a 1:1 alfalfa to coastal hay blend. Zinc doses of 0.073 mg/kg/d equivalents were added to two of the jars ( Zn), and the additional two jars received 0.00 mg/kg/d (CON). Following 48 h of incubation, in vitro true digestibility (IVTD) showed no significant differences between the control and the treatment groups. Average dry matter digested in vitro was 91.87% and 95.13%, respectively. There were no differences detected in ADF, NDF, IVTD, or OM between the treatment groups. While no detectable differences were observed in this study, this methodology did prove to be viable and functional for microbial digestion in vitro. This study can be replicated with multiple experimental units to confirm the observations of increased digestibility. Formal nutritional guidelines can be created to allow for more efficient feeding of cervids thereby reducing feed costs and continuing the growth of the captive deer industry.

Through a bioreplication approach, we have fabricated artificial visual decoys for the invasive species Agrilus planipen- nis--commonly known as the Emerald Ash Borer （EAB）. The mating behavior of this species involves an overflying EAB male pouncing on an EAB female at rest on an ash leaflet before copulating. The male spots the female on the leaflet by visually detecting the iridescent green color of the female＇s elytra. As rearing EAB and then deploying dead females as decoys for trapping is both arduous and inconvenient, we decided to fabricate artificial decoys. We used a dead female to make a negative die of nickel and a positive die of epoxy. Decoys were then made by first depositing a quarter-wave-stack Bragg reflector on a polymer sheet and then stamping it with a pair of matched negative and positive dies to take the shape of the upper surface of an EAB female. As nearly 100 artificial decoys were fabricated from just one EAB female, this bioreplication process is industrially scalable. Preliminary results from a field trapping test are indicative of success.

Use of stereotactic radiosurgery in the treatment of gynecologic malignancies:A review

Recent retrospective studies have reported the use ofstereotactic radiosurgery(sRs) in the treatment of gy-necologic cancers. sRs uses real-time imaging and highdose radiation beams attached to precise robotic armsto target malignant lesions while sparing normal *** purpose of this review is to examine the indicationsfor sRs in gynecologic oncology, review the currentliterature regarding the use of sRs in gynecologic can-cers, and identify future directions for research in thisarea. Literature on stereotactic radiosurgery was re-viewed using the PubMed search engine. Articles writ-ten in English from 1993-2013 were reviewed, and 20 case series and clinical trials were included. The safetyand efficacy sRs has been demonstrated in all gyne-cologic disease sites including cervical, endometrial,vulvar, vaginal, and ovarian cancers. Indications for itsuse include non-central pelvic recurrences in previouslyirradiated patients, complex or non-resectable diseaserecurrence, and solitary brain metastases. Toxicitiesare usually mild, though grade 3-4 toxicities have been reported. sRs is a promising second line treatment modality for patients with primary or recurrent disease who cannot undergo standard surgical or radiation therapy. Further research is required to determine optimal dosing and fractionation schedules, delineate appropriate patient populations, and assess longterm morbidity and survival.
