Background: Although hyperglycaemia is one of the known side effects of L-asparaginase, its contribution to the development of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is less well known in the literature. Asparaginase is an essential component of treatment protocols for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) in combination with other chemotherapeutic drugs. On further evaluation, she was found to have high anion gap metabolic acidosis, hyperglycaemia and ketonuria. In recent decades, the use of these chemotherapeutic agents has led to a decrease in mortality and disease-free survival in ALL. L-asparaginase is one of the chemotherapy protocols used in the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) and can induce hyperglycaemia which is aggravated by the concomitant use of corticosteroids. We report the observation of a 14-year-old girl treated with chemotherapy (GFA LAL protocol) who developed transient diabetes following the use of L-asparaginase. She was treated at the Donka paediatric haemato-oncology unit by a multidisciplinary team including a paediatric oncologist, a psychologist and a diabetologist. The aim of this study was to highlight blood glucose monitoring before and after the use of asparaginase in acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. Conclusion: We conclude that the occurrence of ketoacidosis following the use of asparaginase is a rare event. We recommend close monitoring of blood glucose levels for hyperglycaemia in patients with ALL receiving L-asparaginase.

Photoinduced carrier dynamical processes dominate the optical excitation properties of photocatalysts and further determine the photocatalytic *** addition,as the electrons generally possess a faster transfer rate than holes,hole transfer and accumulation are critical,and they play the key efficiency-limiting step during the photocatalytic ***,a comprehensive understanding of the dynamics of photogenerated holes and their determining factors in the photocatalytic system is highly essential to rationalize the full catalytic mechanism and develop highly efficient photocatalysts,which have not yet been *** this work,the photoinduced charge carrier dynamics in InP/ZnS quantum dots(QDs)capped with longchain L-typed ligands(oleylamine)and inorganic ligands(sulfide ion(S^(2-)))were ***-resolved photoluminescence and femtosecond transient-absorption spectroscopy unambiguously confirmed the ultrafast hole transfer from the InP core to S^(2-)***,by probing the bleach of vibrational stretching of the ligands with transient midinfrared absorption spectroscopy,the hole transfer time was determined to be 4.2 *** injected holes are long-lived at the S^(2-) ligands(>4.5 ns),and they can remove electrostatically attached surfactants to compensate for the spatial charge ***,compared with other inorganic ligands such as Cl^(-) and PO_(4)^(3-),S^(2-) balances the ionic radii and net charge to ensure the optimal condition for charge *** observation rationalizes the excellent photocatalytic H_(2) evolution(213.6μmol mg^(-1) within 10 h)in InP/ZnS QDs capped with S^(2-) compared with those capped with other ligands and elucidates the role of surface ligands in the photocatalytic activity of colloidal QDs.

Kafr El-Dawar is a major industrial city and a municipality on the Nile Delta in northern Egypt. Kafr El-Dawar area is unfortunately suffering from many factories that let out their waste water into the irrigation canal and agricultural drains. Twenty five water samples were collected from five water resources to assess their heavy pollution. The determination of heavy metals (HV) water resources content conducted to compose the following increasing HV concentration sequences;Drain Abu Qir (DA): Min (Cu)_Max (Zn), Canal Dbora Deufsho (CD): Min (Cu)_Max (Zn), Drain Dbora Abu Qir (DD): Min (Cu)_Max (Fe), Drain Kafr Dawar Deufsho (DK) : Min (Cu)_Max (Mn) and Drain Yarn and Fabric (DY) Min (Cu)_Max (Zn). Distribution patterns of HV concentration of water resources were (a) wide spread-distribution (Cr, Co, Mn), (b) moderately spread distribution pattern (Cu, Ni, Pb),and (c) narrow spread distribution pattern (Fe, Cd, Li and Zn) . The association study conducted to classify the HV concentration into three groups;positively highly correlated HV: (Pb_Cd), (Pb_Co), (Pb_Cr), (Cd_Co), (Zn_Fe), (Cr_Co), (Ni_Co) and (Ni_Fe), negatively highly correlated HV: (Pb_Mn), (Cd_Mn), (Mn_Cu) and (Co_Li) and intermediate cases (non-significant positive and negative intercorrelation) that was represented by the other cases. The low values of contamination factor, of short term use (CfiST), showed that the majority of HV concentration, of the studied water resources was at safe use level. This certainly with exception of the cases of cadmium that classified the water resources DA and CD, and DD into polluted and risky levels, respectively. The high values of contamination factor, of long term use (CfiLT), indicated that the studied water resources were mainly contaminated by Cd, Co and Cr heavy metals. Contrary, the low values of (CfiLT) of Zn, Fe, Li, Ni, Pb and Cu, all studied water resources are safe. Contamination degree index (Cd) indicated the safe use at short term of water resource

Purpose: Cervical spine is considered to be the most moving part of vertebral column. It is located in a very important part of the body i.e. neck having some very important structures related to it. Any age related changes occurring in such a part of vertebral column may lead to many disorders and disabilities. Complete familiarity of this entire region anatomically as well as radiologically is therefore of utmost importance for the diagnosis and management of such disorders. Aim of this work is to evaluate the frequency of age related degeneration in cervical spine in Saudi adult asymptomatic subjects using CT scan images. Methods: In this study, 105 cases of symptomless adults ranging between 18 - 90 years of age were included. The cases were classified into 3 groups;adult group (18 - 35 years old), middle age group (36 - 55 years old) and old age group (56 - 90 years old). Their CT scans were performed in the department of radiology, King Khalid Hospital, Al Kharj and studied for any age related changes. results: The first age group category included 35 cases;20 had normal and 15 degenerative changes. The second category included 35 cases;3 had normal and 32 degenerative changes. The third category included 35 cases. Single had normal and 34 degenerative changes. Conclusion: Asymptomatic degenerative changes are common in the cervical spine after 30 years of age in Saudi adult asymptomatic subjects.

Objectives: The impairment of right ventricular (rV) myocardial mechanics is evident in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). It is independently influenced by LV mechanics and correlated to the severity of LV phenotype. We investigated the changes in rV global and regional deformation following surgical septal myectomy using vector velocity imaging (VVI). Methods: 25 HCM patients, 68% males with mean age (34.5 ± 12 years) were examined before and within two months after surgical myectomy using VVI. In addition to conventional echocardiographic parameters, peak systolic strain (εsys), strain rate (Sr) and time to peak εsys (TTP) of regional rV free wall (rVFW) & septal walls were analyzed in longitudinal (long) directions from apical four-chamber view and their (Δ) changes were calculated. Similar parameters were quantified in LV from apical 2 & 4 CH views. Intra-V-delay was defined as SD of TTP and inter-V dyssynchrony was estimated from TTP difference between the most delayed LV segment & rVFW. results: All study patients showed improvement of their functional class from NYHA class III to class I and reduction of LVOT gradient to below 20 mmHg except one patient who had 30 mmHg gradients at rest. There was significant reduction of septal thickness, left atrial diameter & volume, LVOT gradient, LVMI, severity of mitral regurgitation, tricuspid annular velocities (P rV diameter (P rease in LV internal dimensions(P r, there was significant reduction of rV and LV systolic mechanics;rV global εsys % (from -16.1% ± 4.4% to -12.9% ± 2.9%, P rom -11.6% ± 2.8% to -9.4% ± 2.2%, P respectively. In this research dobera leaves (DL), an agricultural waste, available in large quantity in south region of Saudi Arabia, were used as low-cost adsorbent for removal of metal ions such as Pb(II). Batch operation was used to study the equilibrium behavior of DL. The effects of initial concentration of Pb(II), solution pH, contact time and adsorbent dose were evaluated. To study the kinetics of adsorption of Pb(II) onto DL, pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order and intra-particle diffusion were used. Adsorption process undergoes pseudo-second-order kinetic as proved by the high value of r2. Furthermore, to design the equilibrium data of adsorption of process, four adsorption isotherm models such as Langmuir, Freundlich Temkin and Dubinin-radushkevich (D-r) were used. It is found that Langmuir equation has the highest value of r2 (0.999) compared with other models. In presences of a mixture of Pb(II)/Ni(II), DL were found to be selective for Pb(II) ions with a high adsorptive capacity of 83 mg/g and show favorable adsorption with rL reliminary results indicate that DL are very effective adsorbent for the removal of Pb(II) ions (>90%) from drinking water with less competition of other ions present in water.

PI and rST Control Design and Comparison for Matrix Converters Using Venturini Modulation Strategy

This paper presents a thorough design and comparative study of two popular control techniques, i.e., classical Proportional Integral (PI) and rST, for Matrix Converters (MCs) in terms of tracking the reference and robustness. The output signal of MCs is directly affected by unbalanced grid voltage. Some research works have attempted to overcome this problem with PI control. However, this technique is known to offer lower performance when it is used in complex and nonlinear systems. On the other hand, rST control offers better performance, even in case of highly nonlinear systems. Therefore, the rST can achieve better performance to overcome the limitation of PI control of nonlinear systems. In this paper, a rST control method is proposed as output current controller to improve the performance of the MC powered by unbalanced grid voltage. The overall operating principle, Venturini modulation strategy of MC, PI control and characteristics of rST are presented.

Use of Foot Measurements as Sonographic Parameter for Estimation of Fetal Age

Objectives: this research was conducted to describe the ultrasonic measurements of the foot full measurements (FFM) and their importance in the antenatal care (ANC). Material and methods: the Descriptive quantitative cross-sectional study conducted in the ultrasound department at Alshaekh Mohammed Ali Fadol hospital in Omdurman locality. The study included 400 healthy Sudanese pregnant women whom in the 1st (late), 2nd and 3rd trimesters (i.e., after 10 weeks gestational age) of different parity and ages (15 years old and above);they have regular menstrual cycle and well certain of their last menstrual period and calculated date of delivery. Ultrasonographic measurement of Full Foot Length1 (FFL1), Foot Full Length2 (FFL2), and Foot Full Width (FFW) of all pregnant women were done. Sonographically we measured fetal foot from 14 to 40 weeks of gestation. results: the study revealed that the mean FFL1 was 58.7 ± 12.9 mm. The minimum measurement was 18.8 mm, and the maximum was 89.1 mm, while the mean value of FFL2 was 53.4 ± 11.4 mm, with minimum value 17.5 mm and maximum 81.7 mm, and the mean FFW was 23.7 ± 5.1 mm, with minimum value 7.0 mm and maximum 38.0 mm. Conclusion: a strongly significant relationships were observed between (FFL1, FFL2, FFW) and gestational age (p = 0.00). However there is no significant difference between the FFL1, FFL2, and correlations with sex of embryo, residence, occupation, parity, maternal height, socioeconomic status, bleeding during this pregnancy, chronic illness, and caesarian section, moreover there are significant correlations between the FFL1, FFL2 and the (maternal age, maternal weight, and body mass index), but in the measurement of the fetal FFW there were no significant correlations with (sex of embryo, maternal age, body mass index, residence, occupation, parity, socioeconomic status, bleeding during this pregnancy, chronic illness, and caesarian section). The present study was performed in order to discern the effects of combined exposure to cadmium and mercury on liver function and histopathological alterations in male adult Wistar rats. In the present investigation, cadmium (100 mg/l) and mercury (25 mg/l) were administered orally for 10 weeks separately or in combination. The rational for studying cadmium and mercury is that both of these metals are encountered frequently in the same contaminated areas. In liver, the activities of serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate amino tranferase (AST) increased significantly in the cadmium (Cd) and mercury (Hg) alone or in combination (Cd + Hg) compared to the control suggesting that both cadmium and mercury cause hepatotoxicity spatially when co-administrated. We noted an increase in serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity in Cd and combined Cd + Hg treated groups while it decreased in Hg treated group. There was no statistically significant change in the level of total bilirubilin. Serum urea concentration showed a significant increase in the Cd and Hg groups compared to the control group. However an increase in serum creatinine concentration was noted only in the combined treated rats showing that renal insufficiency is more serious in the co-exposed group. Light microscopic examination indicated severe histological changes in the two organs under Cd and mercury influence. results of the present investigation clearly showed that mercury has profound effects of hepatic handling of cadmium (synergistic effect) as shown by histological and biochemical results. Moreover, we observed a antagonist effect between these two toxic metals on kidney markers such as urea.
