In their recent article in Nature Immunology, Wang et al. showed that influenza A virus (IAV) infection trained alveolar macrophages (AMs) for sustained antitumor immunity in the lung [1], extending the concept of trained immunity and pointing out benefits of viral respiratory infection in the context of pulmonary antitumor immune surveillance.

Portland cement has been widely used for stabilisation/solidification （S/S） treatment of contaminated soils. However, there is a dearth of literature on pH-dependent leaching of contaminants from cement-treated soils. This study investigates the leachability of Cu, Pb, Ni, Zn and total petroleum hydrocarbons （TPH） from a mixed contaminated soil. A sandy soil was spiked with 3000 mg/kg each of Cd, Cu, Pb, Ni and Zn, and 10,000 mg/kg of diesel, and treated with ordinary Portland cement （CEM I）. Four different binder dosages, 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% （m/m） and different water contents ranging from 13%-19% dry weight were used in order to find a safe operating envelope for the treatment process. The pH-dependent leaching behaviour of the treated soil was monitored over an 84-day period using a 3-point acid neutralisation capacity （ANC） test. The monolithic leaching test was also conducted. Geotechnical properties such as unconfined compressive strength （UCS）, hydraulic conductivity and porosity were assessed over time. The treated soils recorded lower leachate concentrations of Ni and Zn compared to the untreated soil at the same pH depending on binder dosage. The binder had problems with Pb stabilisation and TPH leachability was independent of pH and binder dosage. The hydraulic conductivity of the mixes was generally of the order, 10-8 m/sec, while the porosity ranged from 26%--44%. The results of selected performance properties are compared with regulatory limits and the range of operating variables that lead to acceptable performance described.

This study was designed to determine the safety and efficacy of cefovecin (Convenia?;Pfizer Animal Health) when compared to clindamycin (Antirobe?;Pfizer Animal Health) as an adjunctive therapy to periodontal scaling or surgery for severe periodontal disease in dogs. A multi-centre, double-masked, randomised study was conducted in 299 dogs with severe periodontal disease. Clindamycin, administered once daily at 11 mg/kg bodyweight orally for 10 days following dental surgery was compared with a single, subcutaneous injection of cefovecin (8 mg/kg bodyweight) administered at the time of dental surgery. The primary efficacy parameter assessed was percentage of tooth-root sites bleeding when probed (an indicator of gingival inflammation) 42 days after surgery. Two-hundred and ninety-one (291) dogs were included in the efficacy assessments. Cefovecin was shown to be non-inferior to clindamycin. The percentage of sites bleeding on probing was reduced from 54.3% to 20.3% for the cefovecin group (53.1% reduced to 17.4% for the clindamycin group). There were no suspected adverse drug experiences attributed to treatment with cefovecin or clindamycin. Cefovecin was shown to be as effective and safe adjunctive treatment for severe periodontal disease in dogs undergoing periodontal scaling and surgery as clindamycin.

Accumulating operational experience in both aerobic and anaerobic mechanical biological waste treatment （MBT） makes it increasingly obvious that controlled water management would substantially reduce the cost of MBT and also enhance resource recovery of the organic and inorganic fraction. The MBT plant at Gescher, Germany, is used as an example in order to determine the quantity and composition of process water and leachates from intensive and subsequent rotting, pressing water from anaerobic digestion and scrubber water from acid exhaust air treatment, and hence prepare an MBT water balance. The potential of, requirements for and limits to internal process water reuse as well as the possibilities of resource recovery from scrubber water are also examined. Finally, an assimilated process water management concept with the purpose of an extensive reduction of wastewater quantity and freshwater demand is presented.

＜正＞ The aim of the project was to examine the thermo-hydraulic process of air-steam leakage with possible condensation through known crack patterns. The tests simulate a section of a containment wall and allow modifying the crack width independent from the temperature and internal pressure. Therefore tests at varying crack openings could be performed while using the same load scenario. Additionally to the tests with air-steam mixtures pure air tests were performed before, in between and after steam tests in order to compare the leakage rates for the given crack pattern.
