Behavior of diatomaceous soil in lacustrine deposits of Bogota, Colombia

This work presents a study on the behaviors of diatomaceous soils. Although studies are rarely reported on these soils, they have been identified in Mexico City, the Sea of Japan, the northeast coast of Australia,the equatorial Pacific, and the lacustrine deposit of Bogota(Colombia), among other locations. Features of this kind of soil include high friction angle, high initial void ratio, high compressibility index, high liquid limit, and low density. Some of these features are counterintuitive from a classical soil mechanics viewpoint. To understand the geotechnical properties of the diatomaceous soil, a comprehensive experimental plan consisting of more than 2400 tests was performed, including physical tests such as grain size distribution, Atterberg limits, density of solid particles, and organic matter content; and mechanical tests such as oedometric compression tests, unconfined compression tests, and triaxial *** tests were complemented with scanning electron microscope(SEM) observations to evaluate the microstructure of the soil. The test results show that there is an increase in liquid limit with increasing diatomaceous content, and the friction angle also increases with increasing diatomaceous content. In addition, several practical correlations were proposed for this soil type for shear strength mobilization and intrinsic compression line. Finally, useful correlations were presented, such as the relationship between the state consistency and the undrained shear strength, the friction angle and the liquid limit, the void ratio at 100 kPa and the liquid limit, the plasticity index and the diatomaceous content, among others.

Aerial pollutants on a pig farm in peri-urban Beijing,China

The study was carried out to evaluate the airborne gases and suspended particulate matter concentrations in the pig barns of a commercial pig farm situated in the peri-urban area of Beijing,*** measurements followed the natural pig life-stages namely:gestation,farrowing,weaning,and *** order to accomplish these objectives,three different measurement devices were employed:(i)color diffusion tubes,(ii)a portable gas measuring device,and(iii)a dust measuring *** to the rotation of the devices in the different sampling places,the measurements were performed at different time periods during the months of the summer and winter season in *** pig farm had a capacity of 15000 pigs per year and the manurial system was identified as“gan qing fen”or dry cleaning of the *** main by-products generated by the farm were irrigation water and small-scale biogas *** dust concentrations were identified in the pig barns,especially during the feeding and manure cleaning events inside the farrowing and weaning barns with slatted *** dust ranged from 0 mg/m3 to 12.45 mg/m3,while the allowable dust ranged from 0 mg/m3 to 9.62 mg/*** concentration ranged from 0 ppm to 20 ppm(1 ppm=1 cm3/m3),and the carbon dioxide concentration ranged from 300 ppm to 8000 *** highest ammonia concentration was recorded in the fattening barn during the summer season,while the highest carbon dioxide concentration was reported in the weaning barn during the summer *** results of this study were similar to the results of studies performed on pig farms under natural and mechanical ventilation *** the other hand,the problems encountered during the gas measurements on the pig farm were directly related to the inadequate housing layout due to the obstruction of windows,fans and air channels for indoor ventilation,and thus the measurement devices faced harsh working ***,it is recommended that the housing system s

This paper presents the mechanical behaviors of the lacustrine deposit,a representative soil in Bogota,***,the physical characterization of the deposit is performed via laboratory tests (grain size distribution,scanning electron microscopy,Atterberg limits and water content).This characterization intends to explain the special characteristics of the mechanical behaviors of this ***,various triaxial tests are carried out with controlled loading path,strain rate change,relaxation,extensile stress,and cyclic *** test results reveal the shape of the yield curve for Bogotá soil (in a natural state),and also show that an increasing effect of the strain rate depends on the liquid *** effect is also preserved with extensile stresses (which are poorly studied in soil mechanics).Finally,other effects,such as the loss of structure in the reconstituted samples and the effect of shear modulus at low strains,are studied for Bogota soil.

Activation of 2D MoS_(2) electrodes induced by high-rate lithiation processes

MoS_(2) is a highly promising material for application in lithium-ion battery anodes due to its high theoretical capacity and low ***,problems with a fast capacity decay over cycling,especially at the first cycles,and poor rate performance have deterred its practical ***,electrodes comprised solely of few-layers 2D MoS_(2) nanosheets have been manufactured by scalable liquid-phase exfoliation and spray deposition *** long-standing controversy questioning the reversibility of conversion processes of MoS_(2)-based electrodes was *** studies revealed that,in 2D MoS_(2) electrodes,conversion processes are indeed reversible,where nanostructure played a key *** of the electrodes at high current rates revealed an intriguing phenomenon consisting of a continuously increasing capacity after ca.100-200 *** phenomenon was comprehensively addressed by a variety of electrochemical and microscopy methods that revealed underlying physical activation mechanisms that involved a range of profound electrode structural *** mechanisms delivered a capacitive electrode of a superior rate performance and cycling stability,as compared to the corresponding pristine electrodes,and to MoS_(2) electrodes previously ***,we have devised a methodology to overcome the problem of cycling stability of 2D MoS_(2) ***,activation of electrodes constitutes a methodology that could be applied to enhance the energy storage performance of electrodes based on other 2D nanomaterials,or combinations thereof,strategically combining chemistries to engineer electrodes of superior energy storage properties.

Monocyte-secreted Wnt5a interacts with FZD5 in microvascular endothelial cells and induces angiogenesis through tissue factor signaling

Angiogenesis during reactive and pathologic processes is characteristically associated with inflammation. Inflammatory cells partici- pate in angiogenesis by secreting different molecules that affect endothelial celt functions. We had previously shown that induced tissue factor （TF） expression in activated rnicrovascular endothelial celts （rn EC） is able to induce angiogenesis via autocrine regulation. However, the signals that induce TF expression in mEC are not fully known. Here, we demonstrate that rnonocyte paracrine cross-talk with mECs triggers rnEC-TF expression. We have identified that rnonocyte-secreted Wnt5a induces TF expression in rnEC and function-ally induces celt rnonolayer repair and angiotube formation in vitro as well as rnicrovesset formation in vivo. Monocyte-secreted Wnt5a activates FZD5 in mECs, which signals to induce the release of intraceUular Ca2＋ and increase NFKB transcription activity and TF gene expression. In sum, WntSa secreted by monocytes signals through the noncanonical Wnt-FZD5 pathway in mECs to induce TF expression that induces angiogenesis by autocrine regulation.

Metabolic enzymes in seasonally acclimatized and cold acclimated rufous-collared sparrow inhabiting a Chilean Mediterranean environment

Due to the higher energy requirements of birds during winter, it is predicted that the activities of metabolic enzymes （e.g., citrate synthase, CS and cytochrome C oxidase, COX） should increase in tandem with increases in rates of energy expendi ture （e.g., basal metabolic rate, BMR）. However, there is mixed support for the hypothesis of enzymatic acclimatization. Fur thermore, there is little information about the effect of ambient temperature on energetics and tissue enzyme activity levels in passerines inhabiting seasonal Mediterranean environments. In this study we evaluated the interplay between BMR and enzyme activities of freshly caught individuals of the passerine Zonotrichia capensis in winter and summer in a Mediterranean environment from central Chile, and also in warm （30℃） and cold （15℃） labacclimated birds. The results revealed a lack of seasonal variation in BMR, thermal conductance and in the activity of CS and COX. However, we found higher BMR and lower thermal conductance in coldacclimated than in warmacclimated birds. Also, total CS activity was higher in the flight muscles of coldacclimated than in warmacclimated birds. We found also a significant correlation between BMR and total CS activity in pectoral muscle. Although some authors have suggested that BMR mainly depends on the metabolic intensity and mass of internal organs, our results revealed that skeletal muscles such as the flight muscles may also affect BMR. Finally, differences in the accli mation and acclimatization responses in Rufouscollared sparrows suggest that largescale oscillations in the physical environment might maintain the capacity for flexibility in thermogenic traits through generations .

The salinity stress is one of the most relevant abiotic stresses that affects the agricultural *** present study was performed to study the improvement of the salt tolerance of tomato plants which is known for their susceptibility to salt *** present study aimed to assess to what extent strain Azospirillum brasilense(N040)and Saccharomyces cerevisiae improve the salt tolerance to tomato plants treated with different salt *** inoculant strain ***(N040)was previously adapted to survive up to 7%NaCl in the basal media.A greenhouse experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of this inoculation on growth parameter such as:plant height,root length,fresh and dry weight,fruits fresh weight,chlorophyll content,proline and total soluble sugar in tomato plants under salt stress *** results revealed that co-inoculation of Azospirillum brasilense(N040)and Saccharomyces cerevisiae significantly increased the level of proline(8.63 mg/g FW)and total soluble sugar(120 mg/g FW)of leaves under salinity condition comparing to non-inoculated plants(2.3 mg/g FW and 70 mg/g FW,respectively).Plants co-inoculated with adapted strain of *** and *** showed the highest significant(p<0.01)increase in fruit yield(1166.6 g/plant),plant high(115 cm)and roots length(52.6)compared whit un-inoculated control plants(42 g/pant,43.3 cm and 29.6 cm,respectively).In contrast,Na^(+)ion content was significantly decreased in the leaves of salt stressed plants treated with the ***(N040)and ***,the results showed that dual benefits provided by both ***(N040)and *** can provide a major way to improve tomato yields in saline soils.

Endoscopic mucosal ablation-an alternative treatment for colonic polyps:Three case reports

BACKGROUND Endoscopic resection of non-invasive lesions is now the standard of care for lesions in the GI ***,resection techniques require extensive training,are not available in all endoscopy centers and are prone to *** mucosal ablation(EMA)is a combination of resection and ablation techniques and it may offer an alternative in the management of such *** SUMMARY In this case series we report the successful treatment of three flat colonic polyps using the EMA *** lesions were treatment naïve and 1 was a recurrence after an endoscopic mucosal *** sizes ranged from 2 to 4 *** three polyps were ablated successfully with no immediate or delayed *** recurrence rate at 1 year of follow up was 0%.CONCLUSION Based on this initial experience,we conclude that EMA is a safe and effective technique for the treatment of non-invasive colonic polyps when endoscopic resection techniques are not available.

Evolving spectrum of diabetic nephropathy

Diabetes remains an important health issue as more patients with chronic and uncontrolled diabetes develop diabetic nephropathy(DN), which classically presents with proteinuria followed by a progressive decrease in renal ***, an increasing proportion of DN patients have a decline in kidney function and vascular complications without proteinuria, known as nonproteinuric DN(NP-DN). Despite the increased incidence of NP-DN, few clinical or experimental studies have thoroughly investigated the pathophysiological mechanisms and targeted treatment for this form of DN. In this review, we will examine the differences between conventional DN and NP-DN and consider potential pathophysiological mechanisms, diagnostic markers, and treatment for both DN and NP-DN. The investigation of the pathophysiology of NP-DN should provide additional insight into the cardiovascular factors influencing renal function and disease and provide novel treatments for the vascular complications seen in diabetic patients.
