Prevalence of celiac disease in Germany:A prospective follow-up study

AIM:To determine the prevalence of celiac disease in a randomly selected population sample. METHoDS:A total of 2157 subjects (1036 males; 1121 females) participating in a population-based cross-sectional study underwent laboratory testing for tissue transglutaminase and antibodies to immunoglobulin A, endomysium and antigliadin. In a second step, all subjects who had been examined serologically were surveyed using a questionnaire that included questions specific to celiac disease. Subjects with positive antibody titers and those with histories positive for celiac disease then underwent biopsy. At the first follow up, antibody titers were again determined in these subjects and subjects were questioned regarding symptoms specific for celiac disease and disorders associated with celiac disease. The second follow up consisted of a telephone interview with subjects positive for celiac ***:Antibody tests consistent with celiac disease were reported in eight subjects, corresponding to an overall prevalence of 1:270 (8/2157). The prevalence among women was 1:224 and 1:518 in men. Classical symptoms were observed in 62.5% of subjects. Atypical celiac disease was present in 25.0%, and transient celiac disease in 12.5%. False-negative test results were returned in three subjects. This yields a sensitivity and specificity of 62.5% and 50.0%, respectively, for tissue transglutaminase immunoglobulin-A antibody; of 62.5% and 71.4% respectively, for endomysium antibody; and of 62.5% and 71.4%, respectively, for antigliadin ***:The prevalence rate in our collective lies within the middle tertile of comparable studies in Europe. The use of a single antibody test for screening purposes must be called into question.

Type 1 diabetes mellitus(T1D)is an autoimmune disease that is characterized by a progressive infiltration of autoreactive T cells into the pancreatic islets and the destruction of insulin-producing beta cells.1 It is generally assumed that T1D is initiated by yet unidentified T cells that escape from thymic negative selection2 and trigger an initial destruction of beta cells.3 These initial hits could generate suitable conditions in beta cells and/or in islets that favor the coactivation and amplification of autoreactive T cells directed against a broad spectrum of beta cell-specific antigens,such as GAD65,IGRP,and IA-2.

Aims Non-structural carbohydrates(NSCs)are plant storage compounds used for metabolism,transport,osmoregulation and regrowth following the loss of plant *** in conditions suitable for optimal growth,plants continue to store *** storage may be due to passive accumulation from sink-inhibited growth or active reserves that come at the expense of *** former pathway implies that NSCs may be a by-product of sink limitation,while the latter suggests a functional role of NSCs for use during poor *** Using 13C pulse labelling,we traced the source of soluble sugars in stem and root organs during drought and everwet conditions for seedlings of two tropical tree species that differ in drought tolerance to estimate the relative allocation of NSCs stored prior to drought versus NSCs assimilated during *** monitored growth,stomatal conductance,stem water potential and NSC storage to assess a broad carbon response to *** Findings We found that the drought-sensitive species had reduced growth,conserved NSC concentrations in leaf,stem and root organs and had a larger proportion of soluble sugars in stem and root organs that originated from pre-drought storage relative to seedlings in control *** contrast,the drought-tolerant species maintained growth and stem and root NSC concentrations but had reduced leaf NSCs concentrations with a larger proportion of stem and root soluble sugars originated from freshly assimilated photosynthates relative to control *** results suggest the drought-sensitive species passively accumulated NSCs during water deficit due to growth inhibition,while the drought-tolerant species actively responded to water deficit by allocating NSCs to stem and root *** strategies seem correlated with baseline maximum growth rates,which supports previous research suggesting a trade-off between growth and drought tolerance while providing new evidence for the importance of plasticity in

A rise in the number of flood-affected people and areas has increased the interest in new methods and concepts that account for this *** are integrated into disaster risk reduction processes through participatory approaches and can provide valuable up-to-date local *** a field study in Eberbach(Baden–Wuerttemberg,Germany)sketch maps and questionnaires were used to capture local knowledge about *** on a previous study on urban flooding in Santiago de Chile,the tools were adapted and applied to river flooding in the city of Eberbach,which is regularly flooded by the Neckar River,a major river in southwest *** empirical database of the study comprises 40 participants in the study area and 40 in a control *** of the participants in each group are residents and half are *** sampling was used,and the questionnaires aimed to gather demographic information and explore what factors,such as property,influence the risk perception of the study *** results show that residents identify a larger spatial area as at risk than pedestrians,and owning property leads to higher risk *** flood type influenced the choice of the base maps for the sketch *** river flooding,one map with an overview of the area was sufficient,while for urban flooding a second map with more details of the area also enables the marking of small *** information gathered can complement authoritative data such as from flood *** participatory approach also increases the communication and trust between local governments,researchers,and citizens.

Pangenome analysis of Enterobacteria reveals richness of secondary metabolite gene clusters and their associated gene sets

In silico genome mining provides easy access to secondary metabolite biosynthetic gene clusters(BGCs)encoding the biosynthesis of many bioactive compounds,which are the basis for many important drugs used in human ***,the association between BGCs and other functions encoded in the genomes of producers have remained ***,we present a systems biology workflow that integrates genome mining with a detailed pangenome analysis for detecting genes associated with a particular *** analyzed 3,889 enterobacterial genomes and found 13,266 BGCs,represented by 252 distinct BGC families and 347 additional singletons.A pangenome analysis revealed 88 genes putatively associated with a specific BGC coding for the colon cancer-related colibactin that code for diverse metabolic and regulatory *** presented workflow opens up the possibility to discover novel secondary metabolites,better understand their physiological roles,and provides a guide to identify and analyze BGC associated gene sets.

The persistent phosphor SrAl_(2)o_(4):Eu^(2+),Dy^(3+)is the subject of numerous *** often neglected aspect is that in this phosphor,as well as in Sr_(4)Al_(14)o_(25):Eu^(2+),Dy^(3+),there are two different Sr^(2)+sites which can be occupied by the dopant Eu^(2+)ions,We first introduce a general scheme of possible energy transfers in these persistent phosphor materials including explicitly both europium ions,This scheme is used as a generic starting point to study experimentally specific *** illustrate this application with the study of the effect of excitation wavelength(444 and 382 nm)on the afterglow of differently doped SrAl_(2)o_(4):Eu^(2+),Dy^(3+)samples,as well as on the emission decay *** the same excitation intensity under 444 nm excitation,the resulting afterglow intensity is stronger than under near UV *** 382 nm,Eu^(2+)ions on both Sr^(2)+s ites in SrAl_(2)o_(4)are excited,but at room temperature the blue emission is quenched,leading to a loss of *** observed effects can further be associated with the ratio of Eu^(2+)ions and trap states which are modulated by the concentrations of Eu^(2+)and Dy^(3+)in SrAl_(2)o_(4),as well as by temperature,Increasing the nominal Dy^(3+)content from 0.1 mol%to 0.5 mol%with respect to Sr results in the doubling of the integrated afterglow intensity and confirms thus that Dy^(3+)ions are indeed involved in the trapping process,The concentration of trap states is much lower than the concentration of Eu^(2+)ions,as even with low excitation densities,a plateau of integrated afterglow intensity(corresponding to the total number of accessible traps)is *** postulate that an important fraction of excited Eu^(2+)ions can potentially transfer their energy to trap *** that all traps are filled or in a dynamical filling-depletion process under illumination(with thermal and/or optical depletion processes),for the remaining Eu^(2+)a"normal"steady-state emission is observed
