Response evaluation of chemotherapy in metastatic colorectal cancer by contrast enhanced ultrasound

AIM:To evaluate whether contrast enhanced ultrasound(CEUS) might also be used for response prediction and early response evaluation in patients receiving bevacizumab based chemotherapy for metastasized colorectal ***:Thirty consecutive patients with non primary resectable liver metastases from colorectal cancer underwent CEUS before treatment(CEUS date 1) and before the second(CEUS date 2) and fourth(CEUS date 3) cycle of bevacizumab based *** parameters [PEAK,Time to peak(TTP) and RISE RATE]were correlated with radiological ***:For neoadjuvant purpose a reduction of tumour mass was required to assume clinical *** on these response criteria there was a significant(P < 0.001) correlation in TTP between metastases of responders(9.08 s) and non-responders(14.76 s) archived on CEUS date *** calculating a standardized quotient(metastases divided by normal liver tissue) we were able to define a cut off,predicting response with a sensitivity of 92.3 % and a specificity of 100 %.To reflect a palliative intention only those patients with progressive disease were classified as *** this stetting TTP was also significantly(P < 0.01) different between responders and *** contrast,Peak and Rise rate did not show any significant difference between responder and ***:CEUS might serve as a surrogate marker to predict treatment response in patients with metastasized colorectal cancer who receive antiangiogenic therapy.

The scope of the paper covers steel cylinders of different radius/thickness ratios of 200 to 750 as well as different support widths and it refers to the basic case of unstiffened cylinders of constant wall thickness with the steel grade Fe 360. The numerical calculations were carried out on the basis of geometrically nonlinear analy- ses including geometrical imperfections as well as material *** to verifications- made by means of comparisons with the test results-parametric studies were performed con- cerning the variation of the wall thickness and the *** aim of the studies was to obtain a basis for developing design recommendations.

However, the restoration of motor function following lesions of the corticospinal tract requires also the recruitment of additional neurons to increase the net corticospinal output. For this purpose, we investigated a novel protocol based on brain state-dependent paired associative stimulation.

Slash and burn practices are widely used around the globe with different degrees of success which are mostly related to the impact of fire on soil properties. In Japan slash and burn practises, known as Yakihata, have a long history and are still used in Yamagata Prefecture today. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of a low severity controlled fire underneath Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) on brown forest soil (Cambisol). Japanese Cedar is the dominant species among plantations in Japan. We measured organic carbon and nitrogen content as well as changes in carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) stable isotope composition in a steep west facing slope under heavy precipitation (~2600 mm/a) and heavy snowfall (~3 to 4 m/a). The accumulation of Ctotal and Ntotal at the bottom of the slopes was remarkably higher at the slash and burned site than in the control forest site. After slash and burn δ15N isotopes in the slope in general became significantly lighter than in the control forest while the δ13C did not show any significant difference between the two sites except at the bottom of the slopes where δ13C was heavier in the forest. The results show that Ctotal and Ntotal values as well as the isotopes ratios of C and N change with decreasing elevation in the forest as well as in the burned site being consistent with leaching and erosion. The changes in soil nitrogen and carbon isotopes at the bottom of the slope appear to be related to the transport of material with different isotopic composition from the upper slope. The effect of the low severity fire (as part of the slash and burn practice) on soil organic carbon and nitrogen movement was enhanced by the steepness of the slopes and the high precipitation of Shonai region.

Compost Barns for Dairy Cows—Aspects of Animal Welfare

Compost barns for dairy cows are showing increased popularity also in Central Europe. A compost barn is used mainly as a two-area system with a bedded lying area and a solid feeding alley. Sawdust or dry fine wood shavings or wood chips are mostly used as bedding material, which has to be stirred twice a day. Stirring aerates and mixes faeces and urine into the bedding material, the mixture decomposes by means of aerobic microorganisms. A joint research project between the Agricultural Research and Education Centre Raumberg-Gumpenstein (HBLFA) and the Institute for Sustainability Sciences Tänikon (ISS) analyzed amongst other things, the cleanliness of the animals, integument alterations, lying behaviour and the current lameness situation of animals. A total of 138 cows were examined on five Austrian dairy farms. All cows were visually scored and animal behaviour was observed by data loggers as well as by direct observation. The mean value concerning cleanliness of animals was 0.44, while the udder was the cleanest and the lower leg the dirtiest area. Only a few lesions in carpal and tarsal joints could be found. Cows showed no differences in lying behaviour between times of day and temperatures. Large differences in lying behaviour were evident among farms. While on the compost barn farms only around 25% of all cows were scored to be lame, on cubicle-housing system farms 31% - 46% of the cows fell into that category (p < 0.001). From the present results, the compost barn can be seen as an animal-friendly system. In further investigations other factors affecting animal health and to resolve any outstanding issues concerning economy and alternative litter materials should be analyzed.
