Functional trait profiles and diversity of trees regenerating in disturbed tropical forests and agroforests in Indonesia

A main question in restoration of degraded forests and forest landscapes recovering from logging and fire is what to expect from natural regeneration through surviving propagules in the soil or seed sources and associated dispersal agents from the surrounding landscape mosaic,as alternative to tree *** diversity in secondary forests may be high,but based on newcomer species of low wood density and long-distance,abiotic dispersal *** compiled and analyzed three pairs of case studies(totaling 815 plots and 11.8 ha)of secondary forests recovering from logging,fire and conversion to agroforest in Sumatra and Kalimantan(Indonesia)on mineral *** on tree species diversity,wood density frequency distribution(indicative of successional status)and dispersal modes were compared with those of less disturbed comparator forests in the same *** undisturbed lowland dipterocarp forest in Kalimantan had close to 200 species of trees(>10 cm diameter)at a 1-ha sample scale(and 450 at a 10-ha scale).After repeated fires a sample area of 2 ha was needed to reach the same species ***-based logging had little impact on tree species *** rubber agroforest with low-intensity management beyond rubber planting,50 tree species were found at a 1-ha scale and close to 100 species in 3 *** Kalimantan forest after repeated fires had a markedly higher fraction of lowwood-density trees(40%),but otherwise,all forests sampled were similar in overall wood density *** logged forest managed by a local community(village forest)and rubber agroforest in Sumatra contained larger fractions of heavy-wood-density *** majority of trees(50%–70%)had birds,bats and primates as dispersal agents in all *** logged forests had higher fractions of autochorous species(15%)compared to other ***(wind-dispersed)species,especially Macaranga lowii,were most common(20%)in lowland dipterocarp *** be

Comparative study of microwave-assisted versus conventional heated reactions of biomass conversion into levulinic acid over hierarchical Mn_(3)O_(4)/ZSM-5 zeolite catalysts

Conversion of delignified cellulose from rice husk biomass,and model compounds of cellobiose and glucose to levulinic acid(LA)over hierarchical Mn_(3)O_(4)/ZSM-5 catalyst was carried out using a household microwave method,and then compared to the established conventional thermos-reaction *** hierarchical ZSM-5 was prepared using a double template method,aiming for micro and mesoporous systems developed in the *** as-prepared ZSM-5 were modified with Mn3O4 through incipient wetness impregnation with Mn2+solution followed by calcination at 550℃.The catalysts were characterized using various techniques such as powder XRD,SEM,BET,AAS,and FT-IR which indicated the hierarchical structure of MFI zeolite(Si/Al of 30-34)with Mn loading of 2.14 wt%.The conversion products were analyzed using HPLC,1H NMR,and 13C NMR *** microwave-assisted reaction using 600 W for 180 s using delignified cellulose,cellobiose,and glucose gave conversion of 37.27%,46.35%,and 54.29%,respectively which is close to the conversion given by the conventional reaction carried out at 130◦C for 4 h(36.75%,55.62%,and 60.9%,respectively).Interestingly,the LA yield from the microwave-assisted reaction(4.33%,6.12%,and 9.57%)is higher than the yield from the conventional reaction,which only produced 5.2%,4.88%,and 6.93%*** microwaveassisted method is also shown to give less by-products compared to the thermochemical ***,it could be considered an alternative method for converting cellulose to LA.

This paper presents a development of a novel path planning algorithm, called Generalized Laser simulator (GLS), for solving the mobilerobot path planning problem in a two-dimensional map with the presence ofconstraints. This approach gives the possibility to find the path for a wheelmobile robot considering some constraints during the robot movement inboth known and unknown environments. The feasible path is determinedbetween the start and goal positions by generating wave of points in alldirection towards the goal point with adhering to constraints. In simulation,the proposed method has been tested in several working environments withdifferent degrees of complexity. The results demonstrated that the proposedmethod is able to generate efficiently an optimal collision-free path. Moreover,the performance of the proposed method was compared with the A-star andlaser simulator (LS) algorithms in terms of path length, computational timeand path smoothness. The results revealed that the proposed method hasshortest path length, less computational time and the best smooth path. Asan average, GLS is faster than A∗ and LS by 7.8 and 5.5 times, respectivelyand presents a path shorter than A∗ and LS by 1.2 and 1.5 times. In orderto verify the performance of the developed method in dealing with constraints, an experimental study was carried out using a Wheeled Mobile Robot(WMR) platform in labs and roads. The experimental work investigates acomplete autonomous WMR path planning in the lab and road environmentsusing a live video streaming. Local maps were built using data from a live video streaming with real-time image processing to detect segments of theanalogous-road in lab or real-road environments. The study shows that theproposed method is able to generate shortest path and best smooth trajectoryfrom start to goal points in comparison with laser simulator.

Soil Metagenome of Tropical White Sand Heath Forests in Borneo:What Functional Traits Are Associated with an Extreme Environment Within the Tropical Rainforest?

White sand heath forests(WS) or kerangas, an unusual variant of tropical forests in Borneo, characterized by open scrubby vegetation, low productivity, and distinctive plant species composition and soil microbial community, are regarded as a stressful lowpH and/or nutrient environment. We investigated whether the functional soil metagenome also shows a predicted set of indicators of stressful conditions in WS. Based on stress-tolerant strategies exhibited by larger organisms, we hypothesized that genes for stress tolerance, dormancy, sporulation, and nutrient processing are more abundant in the soil microbiota of WS. We also hypothesized that there is less evidence of biotic interaction in white sand soils, with lower connectivity and fewer genes related to organismic interactions. In Brunei, we sampled soils from a WS and a normal primary dipterocarp forest, together with an inland heath, an intermediate forest type. Soil DNA was extracted, and shotgun sequencing was performed using Illumina HiSeq platform, with classification by the Metagenomics Rapid Annotation using Subsystem Technology(MG-RAST). The results, on one hand, supported our hypothesis(on greater abundance of dormancy, virulence, and sporulation-related genes). However, some aspects of our results showed no significant difference(specifically in stress tolerance, antibiotic resistance, viruses, and clustered regularly interspaced short palindrome repeats(CRISPRs)). It appears that in certain respects, the extreme white sand environment produces the predicted strategy of less biotic interaction, but exhibits high soil microbiota connectivity and functional diversity.

Leydig Cells Encapsulation with Alginate-Chitosan: Optimization of Microcapsule Formation

This research aimed to optimize the formation of microcapsules from alginate and chitosan for Leydig cells encapsulation. Alginate was used as the first coating agent while chitosan was the second layer. Various concentrations of alginate and CaCl2 were applied utilizing the extrusion method and the best concentration was determined based on their formation time, shape and diameter of microcapsules. Alginate microcapsule was applied with chitosan in various con- centrations. The best chitosan concentration was selected based on its mechanical stability. The results showed that the minimum concentration of alginate was 1.5% (w/v) with viscosity of 33.8 cPs, resulted to spherical microcapsules with diameters of 230 - 270 μm. The optimum concentration of chitosan as the second coating agent was 0.5% (w/v), resulted to spherical microcapsules with mechanical stability of 4 hours. Leydig cells were trapped inside the microcapsule with a density that is proportional to the concentration of cells used in the encapsulation.

The Effectiveness of Facebook as an Advertising Strategic Method Using EPIC： A Case Study of Mie Jupe Jombang

This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of advertising through social media （i.e., Facebook）. Mie Jupe Jombang has applied using an analytical method called EPIC Model. The population of this study points to 5,000 people found as consumers and engaged as facebook friends of Mie Jupe Jombang. Using purposive sampling technique, 100 respondents are collected as the total sample of this study. They are scattered in Jombang regency and engaged with Mie Jupe Jombang＇s Facebook account as friends that apparently seems to advertise Mie Jupe Jombang. This study uses descriptive analysis method with EPIC model （Empathy, Persuation, Impact, and Communication）. The result of analysis shows that the variables of EPIC Model （Empathy, Persuation, Impact and Communication） are found quite effective. Overall, this fmding concludes that the advertising of Mie Jupe Jombang is quite effective.

A Forensic Traceability Index in Digital Forensic Investigation

Digital crime inflicts immense damage to users and systems and now it has reached a level of sophistication that makes it difficult to track its sources or origins especially with the advancements in modern computers, networks and the availability of diverse digital devices. Forensic has an important role to facilitate investigations of illegal activities and inappropriate behaviors using scientific methodologies, techniques and investigation frameworks. Digital forensic is developed to investigate any digital devices in the detection of crime. This paper emphasized on the research of traceability aspects in digital forensic investigation process. This includes discovering of complex and huge volume of evidence and connecting meaningful relationships between them. The aim of this paper is to derive a traceability index as a useful indicator in measuring the accuracy and completeness of discovering the evidence. This index is demonstrated through a model (TraceMap) to facilitate the investigator in tracing and mapping the evidence in order to identify the origin of the crime or incident. In this paper, tracing rate, mapping rate and offender identification rate are used to present the level of tracing ability, mapping ability and identifying the offender ability respectively. This research has a high potential of being expanded into other research areas such as in digital evidence presentation.

Ochratoxigenic Black Aspergilli Isolated from Dried Agricultural Products in Yogyakarta, Indonesia

Black aspergilli, the potential ochratoxin A （OTA） producers, were predominant fungi in fermented cocoa bean, coffee bean and dried cassava in Yogyakarta. Identification of black aspergilli at species level will be useful to make clear link between OTA contamination on food product and the toxin producer. The objective of this study was to identify the species of the black aspergilli producing OTA which contaminated dried agriculture products. In this study, 16 isolates were obtained, and four isolates among of them （YAC-9, YAK-6, YAK-12 and YAG-2） were found as OTA producing-strains, with the highest OTA found on Yeast Extract Sucrose （YES） solid medium of 57.68 ppb. Based on morphological characters, 16 isolates can be grouped into four species, after confirmation by molecular data based on PCR method, the groups were identified as A. carbonarius, A. niger, A. tubingensis and A. aculeatus. OTA producing-strains were identified as A. carbonarius and A. niger, meanwhile, A. tubingensis and A. aculeatus were found as non-OTA producing-strains.

Gut microbiota profile in healthy Indonesians

BACKGROUND Recently, gut microbiota has been associated with various diseases other than intestinal disease. Thus, there has been rapid growth in the study of gut microbiota. Considering the numerous factors influencing gut microbiota such as age, diet, etc., area-based research is required. Indonesia has numerous different tribes and each of these tribes have different lifestyles. Hence, it is expected that each tribe has a specific gut microbiota. A deeper insight into the composition of gut microbiota can be used to determine the condition of gut microbiota in Indonesians and to consider which treatment may be suitable and effective to improve health *** To investigate the gut microbiota of Indonesian subjects represented by Javanese and Balinese tribes by analyzing fecal *** Fecal samples were collected from a total of 80 individuals with 20 in each of the young groups ranging from 25-45 years and the elderly group aged 70 years or more from two different regions, Yogyakarta and Bali. Fecal sample collection was performed at the end of the assessment period(day 14 ± 1 d) during which time the subjects were not allowed to consume probiotic or antibiotic *** quantification of various Clostridium subgroups, Lactobacillus subgroups,Enterococcus, Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, Bacteroides fragilis group and Prevotella,Bifidobacterium and Atopobium cluster, Enterobacteriaceae and Pseudomonas was performed using the Yakult intestinal flora-scan(YIF-SCAN).RESULTS The bacterial population in younger subjects' feces was higher than that in the elderly population, with a total of approximately 10.0 – 10.6 log10 bacterial cells/g feces. The most abundant bacteria in all groups were Clostridium, followed by Prevotella, Atopobium, Bifidobacterium and Bacteroides. In the elderly, an increase in Enterobacteriaceae, Coliform and Escherichia coli was found. In terms of bacterial counts in Yogyakarta, total bacteria, Clostridium coccoides(C. coccoides)

The Effect of Salinity on Growth, Dry Weight and Lipid Content of the Mixed Microalgae Culture Isolated from Glagah as Biodiesel Substrate

Microalgae use photosynthesis to convert solar energy into chemical energy, such as lipid and they can be a replacement for oil-based fuels. They are among the fastest growing plants in the world, and about 50% of their weight is oil. This lipid oil can be used to make biodiesel. Unfortunately, there are only some of potential strains isolated from Indonesia and most of the biodiesel productions are usually using a single strain. Then, although they are rich of oils, their biomass productivity is still low. Salinity treatment can be used to increase their biomass as well as their lipid content. Therefore, the research aim was to study the effect of salinity on the growth, dry weight and lipid content of mixed microalgae isolated from Glagah, Yogyakarta. The mixed microalgae were cultured in 3NBBM medium with different salinities or types of water （sea water, brackish water, and fresh water）. The cultures were incubated at light intensity 3,000 lux under dark：light exposure of 12：12 h for 7 days. The number of cells was counted every 24 h with a Haemocytometer, and the biomass was calculated based on the dry weight. The lipid content was measured on days 0, 3, and 7 using NR （Nile Red） staining, and then the amount of lipid was analyzed using a fluorescence microscope and measured with CellProfiler 2.0 software. The highest dry weight and lipid content were found in seawater medium, they accounted for 3.42 mg/mL and 13.58% at day 7, respectively. Whereas, the highest number of cells was found in freshwater medium, this was 9.8 × 10^6 cells/mL.
