Comparison of intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor agents and treatment results in Irvine-Gass syndrome

AIM:To compare the efficacy of bevacizumab,ranibizumab,and aflibercept in pseudophakic cystoid macular edema(CME)patients with Irvine-Gass syndrome(IGS).METHODS:This study is designed as retrospective consecutive case *** who developed postoperative pseudophakic CME that refractory to topical treatment and were treated with anti-vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF)agents included in the *** coherence tomography(OCT)examination including central macular thickness(CMT),total macular volume(TMV),retinal nerve fiber layer(RNFL),ganglion cell layer(GCL)and choroidal thickness(ChT)measurements at the baseline,1 st,3 rd and 6 th month controls were ***:Fifty-nine eyes of 59 patients with CME and other healthy eyes of the patients(Control group)were *** were 22 eyes of 22 patients in the bevacizumab group(group 1),19 eyes of 19 patients in the ranibizumab group(group 2),and 18 eyes of 18 patients in the aflibercept group(group 3).There was no difference in terms of age,gender,axial length,IOP,and spherical equivalent *** baseline subfoveal and mean ChT were higher in the IGS *** difference between the baseline and sixth month values of subfoveal and mean ChT were compared in the CME groups,thinning was observed in all three *** was thinner in the patient group at the 6 th month of *** resolution time of CME was observed faster in group ***:All three anti-VEGF agents seem to be effective in CME but bevacizumab appears to be slightly more cost-effective than the other two alternatives.

Cholesterol and Sericin as First Aid for Damaged Cells

Cells are surrounded by a double-layered phospholipid cell membrane responsible for the isolation of intracellular contents, active regulation of uptake from the extracellular environment, and intercellular connection and communication. These cell membranes must be intact and functionally active for cell survival and biological functioning. Compromised damage repair mechanisms usually result in impaired cellular homeostasis, leading to early or late problems. Chronic myopathies, certain myocardial diseases, aging, and acute or chronic neurodegenerative diseases (like Parkinson and Alzheimer) are directly related to cell membrane damage. This study examined the effect of a cholesterol-loaded nanoparticle (methyl-beta cyclodextrin) or the silk protein sericin on cell membrane and DNA integrity and cell viability in an in vitro cell damage model (frozen-thawed rabbit sperm cells). The cells were stored in liquid nitrogen (-196°C), thawed in small batches, and treated with cholesterol-loaded cyclodextrin or sericin before incubation at 35°C for 4 hours. Cell membrane integrity, DNA damage, and viability rates were assessed immediately after thawing and after the incubation period. The administration of sericin and cholesterol in a cell damage model increased cell survival and reduced DNA damage over a 4-hour post-thaw incubation period, suggesting their potential use as a “first aid” intervention at the cellular level.

FPGA Implementable Frame Synchronization Algorithm for Burst Mode GMSK

In time division multiple access (TDMA) communication systems, correctly estimating the synchronization parameters is very important for reliable data transfer. The algorithms used for frequency/phase and symbol timing estimates are generally accepted as knowing the start of signal (SoS) parameter. Therefore, within these parameters, the SoS parameter is of particularly great importance. In this study, a reduced version of the SoS estimation algorithm introduced by Hosseini and Perrins is presented to estimate SoS for Gaussian Minimum Shift Keying (GMSK) modulated signals in burst format over additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels. The reduced algorithm can be implemented on FPGA by using half the number of complex multipliers that would be required by the double correlation method and is robust to carrier frequency/phase errors. Simulations performed under 0.1 normalized frequency offset conditions show that the proposed algorithm has a probability of false lock which is less than 7×10-2, even at 0 dB SNR level.

Inverse design of a Si-based high-performance vertical-emitting meta-grating coupler on a220 nm silicon-on-insulator platform

Efficient extraction of light from a high refractive index silicon waveguide out of a chip is difficult to *** inverse design approach was employed using the particle swarm optimization method to attain a vertical emitting meta-grating coupler with high coupling efficiency in a 220-nm-thick silicon-on-insulator *** carefully selecting the figure of merit and appropriately defining parameter space,unique L-shape and U-shape grating elements that boosted the out-of-plane radiation of light were *** addition,a 65.7%(-1.82 dB)outcoupling efficiency and a 60.2%(-2.2 dB)fiber-to-chip vertical coupling efficiency with an 88 nm 3 dB bandwidth were demonstrated by numerical *** fabrication constraints,the optimized complex meta-grating coupler was modified to correspond to two etching steps and was then fabricated with a complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor-compatible *** modified meta-grating coupler exhibited a simulated coupling efficiency of 57.5%(-2.4 d B)with a 74 nm 3-dB bandwidth in the C-band and an experimentally measured coupling efficiency of 38%(-4.2 dB).

采用CFD方法数值模拟了小型汽车发动机冷却系统对全车阻力的影响特性。汽车的内部及外部(发动机舱及舱内)均设置了数值模拟网格。分别计算了散热器及风扇对阻力的影响,采用本校实验结果(散热器压力损失)及制造商提供的数据(散热器及风扇的质量流率)确定初始及边界条件,为基于RNS的CFD提供输入。对汽车轮胎运动模式及行驶速度对散热系统阻力及汽车总阻的影响特性也进行了计算分析。预测结果表明,冷却系统阻力占汽车总阻的6.9%,与实测值吻合。

Prevalence of Restless Legs Syndrome in Patients Treated with Peritoneal Dialysis: Clinical and Biochemical Characteristics among Patients with and without Restless Legs Syndrome

Introduction and Aims:This is a prospective study identifying prevalence of Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) in patients ongoing peritoneal dialysis (PD) due to end stage renal disease (ESRD) and comparing clinical and biochemical characteristics among patients with and without RLS. Methods: Two hundred ESRD patients who received PD at least six months assessed by neurologist and nephrologist with regards to presence of RLS. Also, clinical and biochemical features of these patients are determined. One hundred and forty four patients were excluded from study because they had other secondary causes of RLS except for ESRD. Results: Thirteen of 56 patients (23.2%) had RLS. The use of vitamin B + folic acid supplements was significantly lower in patients with RLS than in those without RLS (69.2% vs 97.7%;p = 0.008). There was no significant difference between patient groups with and without RLS in terms of age, gender, body mass index, cause of ESRD, peritoneal membrane transport characteristic, smoking, consuming alcohol, use of erythropoietin, duration of PD, hemoglobin, serum calcium, serum phosphorus, serum albumin, levels of serum iron, total iron binding capacity, ferritin, folic acid and vitamin B12, transferrin saturation, weekly Kt/V urea value, and amount of residual urine volume (p > 0.05). Conclusion: RLS is more common among PD patients than general population. Although essential cause is not exactly known, use of folic acid and vitamin B complex decrease the RLS prevalence in this particular patient group.
