Over-exploitation and sand-gravel mining affect groundwater resources in terms of both quantity and quality. Groundwater level and well yields in and around the sand-gravel pits significantly decrease. Sand-gravel mining also changes the turbidity levels and temperature of groundwater. Reduction and destruction of valuable aquifers are significant issues. In this case, the natural state of the aquifer disappears. The Kazan Plain in central Turkey is a dramatic example of these kinds of results. The productive sand-gravel aquifer in the Kazan plain has been substantially damaged due to intensive sand-gravel mining since the 1980s. Additionally, over-exploitation has caused notable declines in groundwater levels, particularly in the 2000s. This study focuses on the hydrogeochemical situation of the Kazan Plain alluvium aquifer after intensive sand-gravel mining and over-exploitation. Groundwater samples were collected seasonally in 2015, five years after the over-exploitation and heavy sand-gravel mining. The decline reached 20 m (about half of the saturated thickness of the sand-gravel aquifer) in the region where the intensive groundwater abstraction lasted until 2010. Some quarries continued to operate until 2010, but after that mining activity continued only at a minimum level. Today, groundwater quality has been significantly degraded due to the over-exploitation of sand-gravel mining and also the cessation of recharge from fresh river water.

AIM:To investigate alanine aminotransferase(ALT)and sustained virological response(SVR)in chronic hepatitis C(CHC)during peginterferon-ribavirin ***:One hundred and fifty-one genotype 1CHC patients underwent treatment for 48 wk with peginterferon and ribavirin,and were retrospectively divided into two groups as having a rapid virological response(RVR)(Group 1,n=52)and not having an RVR(Group 2,n=99).We also subdivided each group into two according to the initial ALT level being high(Group1h and Group 2h)or normal(Group 1n and Group 2n).HCV RnA and ALT levels were measured at baseline;at 4,12,24 and 48 wk during the treatment period;and at 24 wk *** levels were also obtained at 8 *** to the results of ALT,patients were enrolled in either the follow-up abnormal or follow-up normalized ALT groups at each *** with high and normal ALT levels were compared for each interval in terms of ***:The SVR rates were 83%vs 40%(P=0.000),82%vs 84%(P=0.830),and 37%vs 44%(P=0.466)when comparing Group 1 with 2,1h with1n,and 2h with 2n,*** Group 2h,the SVR rates were 34%vs 40%(P=0.701),11%vs 52%(P=0.004),12%vs 50%(P=0.007),7%vs 50%(P=0.003),6%vs 53%(P=0.001),and 0%vs 64%(P=0.000)when comparing patients with high and normalized ALT levels at week 4,8,12,24,48 and 72,*** multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that RVR(OR=7.05;95%CI:3.1-16.05,P=0.000),complete early virological response(cEVR)(OR=17.55;95%CI:6.32-48.76,P=0.000),normalization of ALT at8 wk(OR=3.04;95%CI:1.31-7.06,P=0.008),and at 12 wk(OR=4.21;95%CI:1.65-10.76,P=0.002)were identified as independent significant predictive factors for ***:normalization of ALT at 8 wk may predict viral response during peginterferon-ribavirin treatment in genotype-1 CHC patients especially without RVR.

Anti-Hypertensive Prescription and Cost Patterns in an Outpatient Department of a Teaching Hospital in Lagos State nigeria

Introduction: Hypertension is a public health problem with a high prevalence in nigeria. The cost of prescription medications is thought to be a barrier for many patients to access the healthcare they need. This study was aimed at identifying associated co-morbid conditions, the prescribing patterns and cost of prescription for the treatment of hypertension in an outpatient clinic at Lagos University Teaching Hospital. Materials and Methods: A cross sectional study was carried out. A total of 147 prescriptions were obtained from the case notes of patients treated at the LUTH outpatient department between February 2012 and August 2012. For each prescription, the number of drugs, the class and combinations of antihypertensives were recorded. The monthly cost of a 30-day anti-hypertensive supply based on the recommended daily dose was calculated. Results: The mean age of the patients was 54(+/-14) years and of the 147 prescriptions, 77(52.4%) was for females and 70(47.6%) was for males. The mean systolic blood pressure was 141.6 mmHg (+/-20.5SD) and mean diastolic blood pressure was 86.5 mmHg (+/-13.3SD). Of the 147 prescriptions, 112(76.2%) were for patients with co-morbidities. The frequency of prescription of the various classes of anti hypertensives are;diuretics 117(79.6%), angiotensin receptor blockers 78(53.1%), angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors 65(44.2%), calcium channel blockers 65 (44.2%) beta blockers 54(36.7%) and centrally acting agents 12(8.2%). Average cost per month was =n=6611.47 (US$44). There was a statistically significant association between co morbid conditions and high cost of prescriptions with 73.7% of those with diabetes and 63.2% of those with renal disease having cost of prescriptions within the high cost group (p nclusion: The cost per month is high and it is recommended that hypertension should be addressed as part of an integrated care program. Ingenious ways of health care financing also have to be promoted.

This study was designed to investigate the effects of kinesio tape （KT） on functional performance of female basketball players with and without chronic ankle instability （CAI）. The players with （n = 15） and without ankle instability （n = 16） were enrolled. KT was applied with tension in the instability group and without tension in the control group. Before KT application, 30 minutes and 48 hours after application; muscle strength and endurance were tested in plantar flexion and dorsiflexion, joint position sense was measured in ankle dorsiflexion and plantar flexion using a dynamometer. Dynamic postural stability was evaluated with a balance system between the levels of 12-4. Vertical jumping heights were measured by jump-meter. The results were statistically assessed by SPSS 19 version. In CAI group, dynamic postural stability showed statistically significant improvement in both legs overall （P 〈 0.0001）, antero-posterior （P 〈 0.004） and medio-lateral indexes （P 〈 0.009）. CAI group showed significant improvements in one-leg postural stability overall, antero-posterior and medio-lateral indexes after 48 hours （P 〈 0.011, P 〈 0.022, P 〈 0.038, respectively）. Joint position sense, vertical jump height and muscle strength and endurance were also compared in both groups, and there was no significant difference between the groups. Postural stability indexes were decreased by supporting fimction of KT to the ankle. As a result, we can say that KT has a beneficial effect on maintaining posture by correcting standing kinematics in cases with CAl. We may suggest that KT can be utilized in preventing the injuries in CAI.

Objective:The aim of this study was to examine angiotensin converting enzyme(ACE)insertion/deletion,alpha adducin,and interleukin-10(IL-10)gene polymorphisms(GPs)in terms of both idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss(ISSnHL)risk and their potential prognostic ***:The study group consisted of 70 patients and the control group consisted of 50 *** blood samples were analyzed for relevant GPs via kompetitive allele-specific polymerase chain ***,sex,affected side,tinnitus,and vertiginous symptom status,number of days between symptom onset and hospital admission,pure tone audiometry results at admission and after treatment were included in the *** were compared ***:The D allele of ACE insertion/deletion GP was significantly more frequent in patients with ISSnHL than in the control group(p=0.032).II genotype was associated with a reduced risk of ISSnHL(p=0.036).The amount of hearing loss was significantly higher in patients with the TT genotype(p=0.027)and T allele of the IL-10 GP(p=0.035)than in the patients without this *** hearing loss was a poor prognostic factor(p=0.008).Conclusions:The D allele of ACE insertion/deletion GP may be involved in the ISSnHL *** to the association of this allele with occlusive vascular pathologies,ischemia is believed to be a common pathway in the etiopathogenesis of ISSnHL.
