Role of quorum sensing in bacterial infections

Quorum sensing(QS) is cell communication that is widely used by bacterial pathogens to coordinate the expression of several collective traits, including the production of multiple virulence factors, biofilm formation, and swarming motility once a population threshold is reached. Several lines of evidence indicate that QS enhances virulence of bacterial pathogens in animal models as well as in human infections; however, its relative importance for bacterial pathogenesis is still incomplete. In this review, we discuss the present evidence from in vitro and in vivo experiments in animal models, as well as from clinical studies, that link QS systems with human infections. We focus on two major QS bacterial models, the opportunistic Gram negative bacteria pseudomonas aeruginosa and the Gram positive Staphylococcus aureus, which are also two of the main agents responsible of nosocomial and wound infections. In addition, QS communication systems in other bacterial, eukaryotic pathogens, and even immune and cancer cells are also reviewed, and finally, the new approaches proposed to combat bacterial infections by the attenuation of their QS communication systems and virulence are also discussed.

Multiple sclerosis(MS)is a complex chronic disease of the central nervous system(CNS)which includes three main anatomopathological characteristics:inflammation,demyelination,*** pathology induces many clinical symptoms,depending on the site of the lesions,such as motor,sensitive,visual,urinary and cognitive *** addition,MS is a very heterogeneous disease that displays different clinical courses or phenotypes(relapsing/remitting MS,primary progressive MS(ppMS)and secondary progressive MS(SpMS).Both neurodegeneration and inflammation are present along the natural history of the ***,the balance of both phenomena varies according to the course of the *** relapsing/remitting MS form,the acute inflammation,mainly adaptive immunity,predominates over the neurodegeneration,being the main cause of the *** SpMS and ppMS,the neurodegeneration predominates over the inflammation,which appears as chronic inflammation,being innate immunity(microglia and astroglia)the main feature in the neurodegenerative process.

Sustainability of microporous polymers and their applications

Microporous polymers(Mps) are studied for their intriguing chemistry and physics as well as their potential application in catalytic transformations, gas-separation processes, water purification and so on. Here, we critically review Mps with respect to the sustainability aspects of their synthesis as well as their applications that have sustainable character. Some Mps have been synthesized from monomers derived from biomass resources, but there is certainly a large potential for further *** are also opportunities to improve the sustainability of Mp synthesis in terms of the use of solvents, catalysts, and related aspects. The applications of Mps in processes related to sustainability depend upon multiple properties. A rich and flexible chemistry is important to applications as catalysts for, among other useful reactions, the photoreduction of CO_2 and selective oxidation. The(ultra)micropore volume of Mps are crucial in gas-separation applications such as CO_2 capture, and the chemisorption of CO_2 on Mp-tethered alkylamines could offer a means to remove that gas from dilute mixtures. When it comes to the storage of H_2 and CH_4 in Mps for onboard use in fuel cell or biogas cars, volumetric capacity is paramount, meaning that the density of the Mps must be considered. Finally, for use in separation and purifications from liquid mixtures(aqueous or hydrocarbon-based), crosslinked Mps are more limited than the solution-processable Mps that can be more easily processed into films and membranes.

Effect of psychological stress on gastric motility assessed by electrical bio-impedance

Metabolic diseases are highly prevalent worldwide and have been associated with adverse clinical outcomes,including mortality,in patients developing coronavirus disease(COVID-19).Because of the close relationship between metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes mellitus and obesity and the presence of metabolicassociated fatty liver disease(MAFLD),a high number of cases of patients affected by both MAFLD and COVID-19 would be expected,especially in highrisk *** studies have shown an increased risk of adverse clinical outcomes,viral shedding,and deep vein thrombosis,especially in patients with MAFLD-related liver *** predisposition to poor outcomes and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection in patients with MAFLD could be secondary to mechanisms common to both,including preexisting systemic chronic inflammation,endothelial dysfunction,and involvement of the renin-angiotensin *** of the increased risk of adverse outcomes,MAFLD should be screened in all patients admitted for *** computed tomography scans could be of help,assessment of liver fibrosis is also recommended,favoring noninvasive methods to limit the exposure of healthcare *** involvement in this population ranges from abnormalities in liver chemistry to hepatic steatosis in postmortem ***,preventive measures should be strongly advocated in patients already known to have MAFLD,including the use of telemedicine and vaccination in addition to general measures.

Territorial Competitiveness in a Globalised Economy： Regional Efficiency of the Mexican Service Sector

The existence of a solid service sector and some degree of specialisation in tertiary activities are among a number of territorial diversity of factors which need to be taken into account in relation to the creation of competitive capacities. In addition globalisation has presumably played a significant role in the productive restructuring of economies in which the service sector has had an increasing quantitative and qualitative importance over the years Therefore, an evaluation of the role of services in constructing regional competitive capacities is required. This paper aims at addressing indirectly the meaning of services on improving competitiveness by providing a wide-ranging analysis of regional efficiency of the Mexican service sector and its determinants as well as an overview of its territorial distribution and special isation patterns. We evaluate the patterns of concentration of the third sector and its branches, and specialisation of regions. The efficiency of the service sector in the NAFTA period is analysed further because of the impact of services on regional competitiveness. We employ state leve data to examine technical efficiency＇s differentials across regions and their determinants. The methodology includes data envelopment analysis to measure technical efficiency which is the dependent variable in a reduced form model that links regional performance with a number of proxies for various types of agglomeration economies such as specialisation, urbanisation and internal economies of scale

Aggregation behavior of Harmonia axyridis under non-wintering conditions

The invasive multicolored Asian ladybeetle, Harmonia axyridis （pallas）（Coleoptera： Coceinellidae）, aggregates inside dwellings during winter to avoid cold weather. This adaptive behavior disturbs homeowners, because of the large numbers of individuals that aggregate, which induces allergic reactions. The migratory flight patterns of this species have been well documented, with individuals preferentially moving toward prominent and high color contrast elements. However, the factors involved in the selection of aggregation sites by this species have yet to be elucidated. Here, we evaluated the influ- ence of （i） the density of individuals and （ii） the type of available shelters on decisions by H. axyridis to settle and aggregate under shelters. A dual choice bioassay conducted in the laboratory demonstrated the presence of mutual attraction to conspecifics. We also found that individuals preferentially settled under red covered shelters compared to transparent shelters, and that the type of shelter outweighed the effect of social interactions among conspecifics. Moreover, this experiment was performed under non-wintering conditions, providing the first evidence that aggregative behavior in this species can also occur under those specific conditions.
