Patella Alta and Trochlea Dysplasia Is Associated with Abnormal Type Ⅱ Collagen and Matrix Accumulation in Chondrocytes

The purpose of this study was to perform morphological and molecular analyses of articular cartilage from a 14-year-old boy with unusual cartilage lesions, patella alta and trochlea dysplasia in both knee joints and clinically examine two family members (sister, mother), also affected in their knee joints. Biopsies from the boy’s patella were used for: histological examination, Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and DNA sequencing of the COL2A1 gene including Multiplex Ligation-dependent Probe Amplification (MLPA), for detection of DNA deletions and duplications. Clinical and radiological examination showed patella alta and trochlea dysplasia for the brother (type D), sister (type A) and mother (type A) with Insall-Salvati ratios of 1.50, 1.46 and 1.3. Light Microscopy (LM) of biopsies from the patient showed rhomboid chondrocytes in lacuna with deposition of protein aggregates in the ECM. TEM revealed abnormal type II collagen fibrils in aggregates and chondrocytes with abnormal matrix accumulation in rough Endoplasmic Reticulum (rER). Immunostaining showed that type II collagen was deposited intracellularly and in protein aggregates, together with type I collagen, indicating alterations in chondrocyte function and turnover of these molecules. DNA sequencing of 54 exons including extended DNA analysis with MLPA was non-conclusive. Conclusions: We suggest that patella alta and trochlea dysplasia for this patient is associated with collagen accumulation in chondrocytes, abnormal type II collagen heterofibrils in the ECM, cell death and cartilage with subnormal strength and increased risk of premature patellofemoral arthritis. A family with these disorders suggests that phenotype might be transmitted as an autosomal dominant trait.

Simple ears - flexible behavior： Information processing in the moth auditory pathway

Lepidoptera evolved tympanic ears in response to echolocating bats. Comparative studies have shown that moth ears evolved many times independently from chordotonal organs. With only 1 to 4 receptor cells, they are one of the simplest hearing organs. The small number of receptors does not imply simplicity, neither in behavior nor in the neural circuit. Behaviorally, the response to ultrasound is far from being a simple reflex. Moths＇ escape behavior is modulated by a variety of cues, especially pheromones, which can alter the auditory response. Neurally the receptor cell（s） diverges onto many interneurons, enabling pa- rallel processing and feature extraction. Ascending interneurons and sound-sensitive brain neurons innervate a neuropil in the ventrolateral protocerebrum. Further, recent electrophysiological data provides the first glimpses into how the acoustic response is modulated as well as how ultrasound influences the other senses. So far, the auditory pathway has been studied in noctuids. The findings agree well with common computational principles found in other insects. However, moth ears also show unique mechanical and neural adaptation. Here, we first describe the variety of moths＇ auditory behavior, especially the co-option of ul- trasonic signals for intraspecific communication. Second, we describe the current knowledge of the neural pathway gained from noctuid moths. Finally, we argue that Galleriinae which show negative and positive phonotaxis, are an interesting model species for future electrophysiological studies of the auditory pathway and multimodal sensory integration, and so are ideally suited for the study of the evolution of behavioral mechanisms given a few receptors.

Low-income and overweight in China:Evidence from a life-course utility model

Previous literature has demonstrated that low-income people are more likely to settle for poor health choices in developed countries. By using income as a budget constraint and signal for future wellbeing in a life-course utility model, we examine the association amongst income and overweight. The data used for this study are from the China Health and Nutrition Survey(CHNS). Estimations are conducted for overweight initiation, cessation, and participation mirroring a decision to begin and a past decision to not terminate. Our findings propose that body weight and the likelihood of overweight commencement rise with additional income but at a diminishing degree, representing a concave relation;while the likelihood of overweight discontinuance declines with additional income but at an accelerating degree, suggesting a convex *** presume that, as opposed to developed countries, low-income people are less inclined to be overweight in China, a country in transition. This could be explained by an income constraint for unhealthy foodstuff. Nevertheless, it will switch when income surpasses the critical threshold of the concave or inverted U-shape curve indicating that low-income people appear to receive not as much utility from future health. Specifically, this adjustment seems to occur earlier for females and inhabitants of urban areas.

Is hydrotherapy an appropriate form of exercise for elderly patients with biventricular systolic heart failure?

Hydrotherapy (exercise in warm water) is considered to be a safe and beneficial method to use in the rehabilitation of stable heart failure patients, but there is little information on the effect of the increased venous return and enhanced preload in elderly patientswith biventricular heart failure. We present a case of an elderly man whowas recruited to participate in a hydrotherapy study. We compared echocardiographic data duringwarm water immersion with land measurements, and observed increases in stroke volume from 32 mL (land) to 42 mL (water), left ventricular ejection fraction from 22% to 24%, left ventricular systolic velocity from 4.8 cm/s to 5.0 cm/s and left atrioventricular plane displacement from 2.1 mm to 2.2 mm. By contrast, right ventricular systolic velocity decreased from 11.2 cm/s to 8.4 cm/s and right atrioventricular plane displacement from 8.1 mm to 4.7 mm. The tricuspid pressure gradient rose from 18 mmHg on land to 50mmHg during warm water immersion. Thus, although left ventricular systolic function was relatively unaffected during warm water immersion, we observed a decrease in right ventricular function with an augmented right ventricular pressure. We recommend further investigations to observe the cardiac effect of warm water immersion on patients with biventricular systolic heart failure and at risk of elevated right ventricular pressure.

Biochar in Nutrient Recycling—The Effect and Its Use in Wastewater Treatment

Biochar, i.e. charred organic material, appears to increase nutrient retention in soil. The mechanism for how this happens is not clear. Here two possible mechanisms, adsorption and microbial immobilisation, are suggested and compared. It is also suggested that we use biochar in wastewater treatment, and so potentially integrate it better into the total waste management cycle.

Oxygen radical formation does not have an impact in the treatment of severe acute experimental pancreatitis using free cellular hemoglobin

AIM： Microcirculatory dysfunction and free oxygen radicals are important factors in the pathogenesis of severe acute pancreatitis. Additional oxygen delivery might enhance lipid peroxidation but may also improve pancreatic microcirculation. This study assesses the effect of free cellular bovine hemoglobin on the formation of oxygen radicals and microcirculation in a rodent model of severe acute pancreatitis. METHODS： Fifteen minutes after induction of acute pancreatitis Wistar rats received either 0.8 mL bovine hemoglobin （HBOC-200）, hydroxyethyl starch （HES） or 2.4 mL of normal saline to ensure normovolemic substitution. After 6 h of examination the pancreas was excised and rapidly processed for indirect measurement of lipid peroxidation products malondialdehyde （MDA） and reduced glutathione （GSH） in pancreatic tissue. RESULTS： The single application of HBOC-200 improved pancreatic microcirculation and reduced histopathological tissue damage significantly. Tissue concentration of MDA did not differ between the groups. Also no differences in GSH levels were detected.CONCLUSION： Though the single application of HBOC-200 and HES improve pancreatic microcirculation, no differences in lipid peroxidation products were detected. The beneficial effect of additional oxygen supply （HBOC-200） does not lead to enhanced lipid peroxidation.

Photodegradation for Nutrient Management in the Dry Tropics

Nutrient limitation in agriculture is a big problem in many tropical areas. Much research has focused on the optimal use of crop residues in agriculture. Recent work indicates that plant residue decomposition rates, including nutrient release rates can be increased by pre-exposure to sunlight. This has potential as a technology to manipulate nutrient release from residues to match crop demands. The possible development and use of this technology is discussed. There is some evidence that this could increase emissions of trace gases, but the increase is thought to be small. Research needs are discussed.

X-Ray Computed Tomography for Root Quantification

Soil cores from a field growing barley and barley mutants without root hairs under conventional and minimum tillage were sampled. They were X-ray scanned to produce a 3D image and then the roots were washed out and weight and length were determined by conventional means. Root volume and surface area were then calculated from the 3D images using state of the art software and methodology, and the measured and calculated measures were correlated. The only strong and significant correlation was between measured weight and calculated volume for mutants without root hairs. It is concluded that the software cannot segment out very small roots, but segmentation accuracy also depends on root structure in some unknown way. Any study using X-ray computed tomography to quantify roots as they grow in situ should start with a calibration for the conditions in question.

Quality of life and hope in elderly people with cancer

The aim of this study was to describe the charac-teristics in Quality of Life (QoL) and hope in eld-erly people newly diagnosed with cancer, and to compare the results for those who survived six months after diagnosis with those who did not. The design of the study was a quantitative study in-cluding drop-out analysis. Data were collected pro-spectively from a group of 101 older people with cancer. The core questionnaire EORTC QLQ-C30 was used to measure QoL and Nowotny’s Hope Scale (NHS) was employed to measure hope. Par-ticipants who died within six months of diagnosis had significantly lower QoL and had more com-plaints about symptoms compared to those who survived. However, hope did not differ significantly between those who died and those who survived. Despite lower QoL score among those who died they were able to deal with their difficult situation and maintain hope in late life. This capacity seems to be an important component of hope in the elderly;thus it is essential to strengthen hope.

Healthy lifestyle for people with intellectual disabilities through a health intervention program

There are well known gaps related to health care service and public health interventions for people with Intellectual Disabilities (ID), but there is still lack of research information of what nurses can do to reducing health disparities of persons with ID. The present study aimed at exploring the views of people with ID about a healthy lifestyle, exercise, and to take part in a health promotion program. A qualitative method was an appropriate method for capturing the informants’ points of view. Participants were adults with intellectual disability who would be able to give their consent verbally and in written form. Women (n = 7) and men (n = 6). Data were collected from focus group interviews and analysed according to a qualitative content analysis of the tape-recorded and verbatim transcribed interviews. The participants took part in four workshops about healthy food, and ten physical activities addressing the connection to physical, social and emotional health. The results of the focus group interviews show that participants have knowledge about the importance of a healthy lifestyle for good health including physical activity and healthy food. Participants also describe social interaction and self-determination as important aspects in their life. It could then be concluded that the health promotion program result point at consciousness about a healthy lifestyle. There is still lack of research information of what public health nurses can do to reducing health disparities of persons with ID. Public health nurses work in community-based services and therefore they also might support persons with ID through health intervention programs.
