similarities and differences between the 2 main kinds of compound eye （apposition and superposition） are briefly explained before several promising topics for research on compound eyes are being introduced. Research on the embryology and molecular control of the development of the insect clear-zone eye with superposition optics is one of the suggestions, because almost all of the developmental work on insect eyes in the past has focused on eyes with apposition optics. Age- and habitat-related ultrastructural studies of the retinal organization are another suggestion and the deer cad Lipoptena cervi, which has an aerial phase during which it is winged followed by a several months long parasitic phase during which it is wingless, is mentioned as a candidate species. sexual dimorphism expressing itself in many species as a difference in eye structure and function provides another promising field for compound eye researchers and so is a focus on compound eye miniaturization in very small insects, especially those that are aquatic and belong to species, in which clear-zone eyes are diagnostic or are tiny insects that are not aquatic, but belong to taxa like the Diptera for instance, in which open rather than closed rhabdoms are the rule. structures like interommatidial hairs and glands as well as corneal microridges are yet another field that could yield interesting results and in the past has received insufficient consideration. Finally, the dearth of information on distance vision and depth perception is mentioned and a plea is made to examine the photic environment inside the foam shelters of spittle bugs, chrysales of pupae and other structures shielding insects and crustaceans.

During the regeneration of the tail in the arboreal New Zealand gecko （Hoplodactylus maculatus） a new set of tail scales, modified into pads bearing setae 5-20 μm long, is also regenerated. stages of the formation of these specialized scales from epidermal pegs that invaginate the dermis of the regenerating tail are described on the basis of light and electron microscopic images. Within the pegs a differentiating clear layer interfaces with the spinulae and setae of the Oberh^utchen according to a process similar to that described for the digital pads. A layer of clear cytoplasm surrounds the growing tiny setae and eventually comities around them and their spatular ends, later leaving the new setae free- standing on the epidermal surface. The fresh adhesive pads help the gecko to maintain the prehensile function of its regenerated tail as together with the axial skeleton （made of a cylinder of elastic cartilage） the pads allow the regenerated tail to curl around twigs and small branches just like the original tail. The regeneration of caudal adhesive pads represents an ideal system to study the cellular processes that determine setal formation under normal or experimental manipulation as the progressive phases of the formation of the setae can be sequentially analyzed.

The compound eyes of the wingless adults of the Madagascar ＇hissing cockroach＇ Gromphadorhinaportentosa sachum, 1853 were examined by light and electron microscopy. Each eye contains 2 400-2 500 mostly hexagonal facets. However, irregularities affecting both shape and size of the ommatidia are relatively common, especially towards the margins of the eye. An individual ommatidium of this eucone type of apposition eye contains eight retinula cells, which give rise to a centrally-fused, tiered rhabdom. The distal end of the latter is funnel-shaped and accommodates the proximal end of the cone in its midst, Further below, the rhabdom （then formed by the rhabdomeres of four retinula cells） assumes a squarish profile with microvilli aligned in two directions at right-angle to each other. Cross sections through the proximal regions of the rhabdom display triangular rhabdom outlines and microvilli （belonging to 3-4 retinula cells different from those involved in the squarish more distal rhabdom） that run in three directions inclined to one another by 120°. Overall the organization of the eye conforms to the orthopteroid pattern and particularly closely resembles that of the American cockroach Periplaneta americana. However, since G. portentosa possesses fewer ommatidia, this could be a consequence of its inability to fly. On the other hand, the large size of the facets and the voluminous rhabdoms suggest considerable absolute sensitivity and an ability to detect the plane of linearly polarized light. Based on the pattern of microvillus orientations in combination with the crepuscular lifestyle G. portentosa leads and the habitat it occurs in, the prediction is made that this insect uses its green receptors for e-vector discrimination in the environment of down-welling light that reaches the forest floor.

Mass aggregations and migrations of millipedes despite numerous attempts to find causes for their occurrences are still an enigma. They have been reported from both southern and northern hemisphere countries, from highlands and lowlands of both tropical and temperate regions and they can involve species belonging to the orders Julida and spirobolida, Polydesmida and Glomerida. According to the main suggestions put forward in the past, mass occurrences in Diplopoda occur：（1） because of a lack of food and a population increase beyond sustainable levels;（2） for the purpose of reproduction and in order to locate suitable oviposition sites;（3） to find overwintering or aestivation sites;（4） because of habitat disruption and changes in the local environment;（5） as a consequence of weather conditions the year（or winter and spring） before. A recent outbreak（November 2014） of a mass migration of the polydesmid Chamberlinius hualienensis Wang 1956 on the Japanese Izu Island of Hachijojima 300 km to the south of Tokyo gave this author an opportunity to review the existing literature on millipede mass migrations and to carry out additional observations on the phenomenon in the field as well as the laboratory. Hitherto unreported heavy infestations with phoretic deutonymphs of the mite Histiostoma sp. as well as dense populations of internal rhabditid nematodes（Oscheius cf. necromena and an unidentified species of the genus Fictor）, suggest that infestations of this kind could be necromenic and either have been a contributing factor for the mass migration or been a consequence of so manyindividuals occurring together at close proximity. It is concluded that mass migrations and aggregations in millipedes do not have one common cause, but represent phenomena that often are seasonally recurring events and appear identical in their outcome, but which have evolved as responses to different causes in different millipede taxa and therefore need to be examined on a case-to-case basis.

Flavonoids are phytochemicals which can regulate the activity of the intestinal immune system. In patients with chronic inflammatory bowel disease(IBD) there is an overexpression and imbalance of the components of the inflammatory immune reactions which are chronically activated. suppression of inflammation can be achieved by anti-inflammatory drugs which are used in clinical medicine but these can cause serious side effects. Flavonoids can have natural immunosuppressive properties and inhibit the activation of immune cells and its effectors(chemokines, TNF-, cytokines). Phytochemicals such as flavonoids bind to the nuclear Ah(aryl hydrocarbon)-receptor thereby stimulating protective enzyme activities. As shown by clinical evidence in patients and by experimental work some flavonoids(apigenin, epigallocatechin gallate) were effective in the inhibition of inflammation. Instead of or additionally to anti-inflammatory drugs flavonoids can be used in IBD patients to treat the over-reactive immunologic system. This is accomplished by upregulation of the Ah-receptor. Flavonoids interact with toll-like receptors expressing on the surface of immune cells, then they were internalized to the cytosol and transferred into the nucleus, where they were attached to the Ah-receptor. The Ah-receptor binds to the Ah-R nuclear translocator and via Ah response element beneficial protective enzymes and cytokines are induced, leading to upregulation of the anti-inflammatory system.

Chip-based flow-through PCR implements the PCR as a continuous process for nucleic acid analytics. The sample is transported in a winding channel through temperature zones required for denaturation, annealing and extension. Main fields of application are the monitoring of continuous processes for rapid identification of contaminants and quality control as well as high throughput screening of cells or microorganisms. A modular arrangement with five heating zones for flow-through PCR is discussed and evaluated. The special heater arrangement allows the implementation of up to 40 cycles on the footprint of a microscope slide, which is placed on top ofa 5 zones heating plate. Liquid/liquid two phase flow of PCR reaction mixture and mineral oil have been applied to create a segmented flow process scheme. In that way, the developed system may provide flow-through PCR as a unit operation for the droplet based microfluidics platform. The single use of disposable devices is commonly preferred due to the sensitivity of the PCR process to contaminations. All-glass microfluidic chips and disposable chip devices, made from polycarbonate as a replication with identically geometry, have been fabricated and tested. For the first time, microchannel geometries with nearly circular profile developed by all-glass technology have been transferred to mass fabrication by injection compression molding. Both devices have been successfully applied for the detection of the tumor suppressor gene p53. Although product yield and selectivity of the amplification process do not depend on the chip material, a well defined, reliable segmented flow regime could only be realized in the all-glass chip.

The subject of our investigation was the visual features of wing color with special focus on the UV reflectance in the green-veined white butterfly （Pieris napi）. Previous studies had concluded that UV reflectance on dorsal wing surfaces is found only in the female P napi. Based on UV sensitive photography, we analyzed a correlation between 12 geographic and environmental factors and UV reflectance patterns on 3 patches on the forewings of 407 P. napi specimens from the Palaearctic region. Results had shown that females significantly differ from males： they exhibit a 25% higher UV reflectance. To investigate whether and how UV reflectance levels on the forewings and hindwings of both sexes are influenced by the environment, we performed a principal component analysis （PCA） with several environmental variables. For several variables （in particular, latitude and longitude, mean annual temperature and precipitation, and temperature annual range and altitude）, the generalized linear model （GLM） model revealed a significant correlation in both sexes. This suggests a link between UV reflectance levels and the environment and distribution of P. napi. We found that stronger UV reflectance is associated with generally more hostile environments and concluded that large-scale environmental factors influence the UV reflectance on the forewings of both male and female green-veined white butterflies.

Purpose This study aimed to investigate if changing the midsole bending stiffness of athletic footwear can affect the onset of lower limb joint work redistribution during a prolonged *** Fifteen trained male runners(10-km time ofs at 90%of their individual speed at lactate threshold(i.e.,when change in lactate exceeded 1 mmol/L during an incremental running test)in a control and stiff shoe condition on 2 *** limb joint kinematics and kinetics were measured using a motion capture system and a force-instrumented *** were acquired every 500 *** Prolonged running resulted in a redistribution of positive joint work from distal to proximal joints in both shoe *** to the beginning of the run,less positive work was performed at the ankle(approximately 9%;p≤0.001)and more positive work was performed at the knee joint(approximately 17%;p≤0.001)at the end of the *** running in the stiff shoe condition,the onset of joint work redistribution at the ankle and knee joints occurred at a later point during the *** A delayed onset of joint work redistribution in the stiff condition may result in less activated muscle volume,because ankle plantar flexor muscles have shorter muscles fascicles and smaller cross-sectional areas compared to knee extensor *** active muscle volume could be related to previously reported decreases in metabolic cost when running in stiff *** results contribute to the notion that footwear with increased stiffness likely results in reductions in metabolic cost by delaying joint work redistribution from distal to proximal joints.

Purpose This study aimed to investigate whether there is a systematic change of leg muscle activity,as quantified by surface electromyography(EMG),throughout a standard running footwear assessment protocol at a predetermined running *** Thirty-one physically active adults(15 females and 16 males)completed 5 testing rounds consisting of overground running trials at a speed of 3.5 m/*** level of muscle activity from 6 major leg muscles was recorded using surface *** variables assessed were the EMG total intensity as a function of time and the cumulative EMG overall *** effects of the chronological testing round(independent variable)on the normalized EMG overall intensity(dependent variable)were examined using Friedman analysis of variates and post hoc pairwise Wilcoxon signed-rank tests(α=0.05).Results There was a systematic reduction in overall EMG intensity for all 6 muscles over the time course of the running protocol(psting round when EMG intensities reached a steady *** one exception was the biceps femoris muscle,which showed a significant reduction of EMG intensity during the stance phase(pswing phase(p=0.16).Conclusion While running at a predetermined speed,the neuromuscular system undergoes an adaptation process characterized by a progressive reduction in the activity level of major leg *** process may represent an optimization strategy of the neuromuscular system towards a more energetically efficient running *** running protocols should include a familiarization period of at least 7 min or 600 strides of running at the predetermined speed.
