Simulation of 3d Heat and Mass Transfer in Glass and Oxide Melts Using the Inductive Skull Melting Technology

The inductive skull melting technology has many advantages for melting of innovative materials in the field of glasses and *** offers high processing temperatures and the compliance of necessary purities at the same time. Applicable materials are in particular optical glasses,which are applied for lenses,fibers or filters,because the skull melting technology allows high process temperatures and high purities of the final *** the production of glass materials strong requirements have to be fulfilled regarding the optical characteristics,which are mainly defined and influenced by the melting of the raw material and the following refining *** unsolved problem in the melting process of glasses and oxides using the inductive skull melting technology was in the past the unknown heat and mass transfer in the melt because temperature and melt flow measurements in the melt are practically impossible due to the high *** the other hand the temperature and velocity distribution in the melt is very important regarding the safety of the melting process,the process control for producing the required properties of the material or the further development of skull melting *** paper describes a new numerical model which is able to simulate the instationary 3d melt flow of glasses and *** numerical model takes into account electromagnetic,convection and Marangoni *** this a comprehensive view of the hidden processes in the practical experiments could be obtained. By means of the new numerical model different glass and oxide melting processes were simulated and the results were compared with experimental *** comparisons show first of all a very good agreement between experimental and numerical results at the melt *** the numerical results allow to look much deeper inside the melt and show interesting new effects of the heat and mass transfer below the melt surface which were unknown before.

Reassessment of electromagnetic core-mantle coupling and its implications to the Earth’s decadal polar motion

The observed Earth’s polar motion on decadal time scales has long been conjectured to be excited by the exchange of equatorial angular momentum between the solid mantle and the fluid outer core,via the mechanism of electromagnetic(EM)core-mantle ***,past estimations of the EM coupling torque from surface geomagnetic observations is too weak to account for the observed decadal polar *** recent estimations from numerical geodynamo simulations have shown the *** this paper,we re-examine in detail the EM coupling mechanism and the properties of the magnetic field in the electrically conducting lower mantle(characterized by a thin d '-layer at the base of the mantle).Our simulations find that the toroidal field in the d'-layer from the induction and convection of the toroidal field in the outer core could be potentially much stronger than that from the advection of the poloidal field in the outer *** former,however,cannot be inferred from geomagnetic observations at the Earth’s surface,and is missing in previous EM torque estimated from geomagnetic *** deduction suggests further that this field could make the actual EM coupling torque sufficiently strong,at approximately 5×1019 Nm,to excite,and hence explain,the decadal polar motion to magnitude of approximately 10 mas.

Assessment of Heavy Metal Contaminants Using Pollution Indices in Ankobra River at Prestea Huni-Valley district, Ghana

The reliance of communities on River Ankobra as the source of drinking water makes the assessment of its quality very imperative to human health and environmental management. The objective of this work was to investigate the concentration of heavy metal in the Ankobra River sediments at the Prestea Huni-Valley district using pollution indices. Sediments were collected randomly from the bottom of the Ankobra River at four different communities namely: Awodua, Heman, Ankobra and Tarkwa Breman. The presence of a set of heavy metals Fe, Mn, Cd, Pb, Zn, Cu, and Hg in the sediments was determined using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS). The results showed that the concentration of Fe, As, and Hg did not differ significantly (p > 0.05) amongst the four communities but significant variation in the levels of Cu, Mn, Cd, Pb, and Zn was found (p dex revealed that the communities were not polluted with Cu, Mn, Fe, Pb and Zn. However, all communities except Tarkwa Breman were found to have exceptionally high levels of Cd. The contamination factor results were consistent with the I-geo results. The pollution load index (PLI) showed that the four communities were not polluted with heavy metals. Strong statistical positive relationship were found between Mn and Cu;Cd and Cu;Pb and Mn;Hg and Mn;Zn and Cu;Zn and Mn;Zn and Pb;Zn and Hg whilst As and Fe showed strong negative correlation.

3d Seismic Analysis of the Gas Hydrate System and the Fluid Migration Paths in Part of the Niger delta Basin, Nigeria

Comprehensive qualitative and semi-quantitative seismic analysis was carried out on 3-dimensional seismic data acquired in the deepwater compressional and shale diapiric zone of the Niger delta Basin using an advanced seismic imaging tool. The main aim of this work is to obtain an understanding of the forming mechanism of the gas hydrate system, and the fluid migration paths associated with this part of the basin. The results showed the presence of pockmarks on the seafloor and bottom simulating reflectors(BSRs) in the field, indicating the active fluid flux and existence of gas hydrate system in the area. In the area of approximately 195 km^2 occupying nearly 24% of the entire study field, three major zones with continuous or discontinuous BSRs of 3 to 7 km in length which are in the northeastern, southern and eastern part of the field respectively were delineated. The BSR is interpreted to be the transition between the free gas zone and the gas hydrate zone. The geologic structures including faults(strike-slip and normal faults), chimneys and diapirs were deduced to be the main conduits for gas migration. It is concluded that the biogenic gases generated in the basin were possibly transported via faults and chimneys by advection processes and subsequently accumulated under low temperature and high pressure conditions in the free gas zone below the BSR forming gas hydrate. A plausible explanation for the presence of the ubiquitous pockmarks of different diameters and sizes in the area is the transportation of the excessive gas to the seafloor through these mapped geologic structures.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is one of the most common cardiac arrhythmias and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. It is becoming increasingly evident diabetes is a significant risk factor for the development of AF. The reason for this link is not clearly understood, however it is clear that other co-morbid diseases associated with diabetes such as hypertension and obesity may be implicated or there may be direct arrthymogenic affects of glucose dysregulation on the myocardium. The development of AF in patients with diabetes may be an ominous sign given the increased risk of death from cardiovascular disease and we propose this is an under researched area where treatments may bring benefits over and above those patients without diabetes in terms of morbidity or death from cardiovascular disease.

A primary quantity of interest in the study of infectious diseases is the average number of new infections that an infected person *** so-called reproduction number has significant implications for the disease *** has been increasing literature suggesting that superspreading,the significant variability in number of new infections caused by individuals,plays an important role in the spread of *** this paper,we consider the effect that such superspreading has on the estimation of the reproduction number and subsequent estimates of future ***,we employ a simple extension to models currently used in the literature to estimate the reproduction number and present a case-study of the progression of COVId-19 in *** models demonstrate that the estimation uncertainty of the reproduction number increases with superspreading and that this improves the performance of prediction *** independent interest is the derivation of a transparent formula that connects the extent of superspreading to the width of credible intervals for the reproduction *** serves as a valuable heuristic for understanding the uncertainty surrounding diseases with superspreading.
