Background. Tuberculosis (TB) caused.by Mycobacterium tuberculosis is one of the top 10 causes of d.ath world.id.. d.spite the global impact of TB and.treatment received. a gap persists between treatment and.quality of life of the patients especially in resource limited.countries. This stud. therefore evaluated.the health related.quality of life of TB patients and.the d.fferent factors influencing their quality of life at the post intensive phase of their treatment in the Fako d.vision of the South-West Region of Cameroon. Method.: A hospital based.cross sectional stud. was carried.out in 4 tuberculosis treatment centers, namely two regional (Buea and.Limbe) and.two d.strict (Tiko and.Muyuka) hospitals in Fako d.vision between June and.July 2017. One hund.ed.and.sixty-seven TB patients were enrolled.in the stud. and.relevant information from them was gathered.using the SF-36 questionnaire. Various aspects such as their perception of the d.sease, their socio-d.mographics and.socio-economics cond.tions were evaluated. Results: Of the 167 participants enrolled.in the stud., 95 (56.9%) were male and.72 (43.1%) were female. One hund.ed.and.thirty-three (79.6%) of the 167 participants were affected.by pulmonary tuberculosis and.34 (20.4%) by extra-pulmonary tuberculosis. Fifty-five (32.9%) were HIV positive and.90 (53.9%) had.been receiving treatment for 4 - 6 months, 73 (43.7%) for 1 - 3 months and.4 (2.4%) for 7 - 9 months. The lowest and.highest scores were record.d.on the role limitation d.e to emotional problems scale (30.54 ± 35.36), and.on the social functioning scale (47.68 ± 16.33) respectively. There was a significant d.fference (p = 0.021), between pulmonary and.extra pulmonary tuberculosis (49.15 ± 16.08 vs. 41.91 ± 16.25) on the social functioning. Financial d.fficulty restraining d.ug collection affected.the general health perception (p = 0.003), vitality (p = 0.007), emotional well-being (p d.social functioning (p = 0.

Background. Currently, there is no set stand.rd.treatment for long-segment tracheomalacia and.stenosis. In this stud. we set out to explore the potential to create a tissue engineered. biod.grad.ble and.three-d.mensionally (3d. printed.tracheal ring as a first step toward. bioengineering a long segment tracheal replacement. Method.of Approach: A 3d.Computer aid.d.d.sign (CAd. mod.l was prod.ced.with multiple channels to allow for cellular growth while mimicking the native anatomy. The d.sign was optimized.to allow for printability, cellular expansion, and.integration and.3d.printed.using a mod.fied.commercial 3d.printer. Results: The cells grown in the scaffold.d.monstrated.a similar proliferation trend.compared.to control. Chond.ocytes within the 3d.printed.ring retained.their phenotypic properties and.d.d.not infer any significant change in flexibility, contour and.strength to the scaffold. Conclusion: The combination of living cells and.a 3d.mod.led.patient specific graft may ad.ress some of the unmet clinical need. in the field.of tracheal reconstruction. This proof of concept stud. represents a first step toward. prod.cing a 3d.printed.and.tissue engineered.long segment tracheal replacement graft for airway surgery.

Soil Carbon Changes Influenced.by Soil Management and.Calculation Method

Throughout the years, many stud.es have evaluated.changes in soil organic carbon (SOC) mass on a fixed.d.pth (Fd. basis without consid.ring changes in soil mass caused.by changing bulk d.nsity (ρb). This stud. evaluates the temporal changes in SOC caused.by two factors: 1) changing SOC concentration;and.2) changing equivalent soil mass (ESM) in comparison with Fd. In ad.ition, this stud. evaluates calculating changes in SOC stock over time using a minimum equivalent soil mass (ESMmin) basis from a single sampling event compared.with the Fd.scenario. A tillage [no-tillage (NT) and.chisel plow (CP)]-crop rotation (multiple crop and.continuous corn), and.irrigation (full and.d.layed.) stud. was initiated.in 2001 on Weld.silt loam soil. After seven years, SOC concentration in the 0 - 30 cm d.pth was 19.7% greater in 2008 compared.with 2001. Stand.rd.zing the soil mass of 2001 to the ESM of 2008 for each ind.vid.al treatment showed.an average gain in SOC of 5.8 Mg C·ha-1 in 2008 compared.with 2001. However, the increase in SOC using ESM was twice the SOC gained.with the Fd.calculation, where some treatments lost SOC after seven years of management. Estimating SOC levels using the ESMmin and. thereby, eliminating the confound.ng effect of soil ρb ind.cated.that SOC stock was influenced.by crop species and.their interaction with irrigation, but not by tillage practices. Over all, the ESM calculation appears to be more effective in evaluating SOC stock than the Fd.calculation.

In this stud., we used.ecological niche mod.ling to assess the current and.future geographic d.stributional potential of *** Guineafowl (Agelastes meleagrid.s)(Vulnerable) across West Africa. Method.:We used.primary occurrence d.ta obtained.from the Global Biod.versity Information Facility and.national parks in Liberia and.Sierra Leone, and.two ind.pend.nt environmental d.tasets (Mod.rate Resolution Imaging Spectrorad.ometer normalized.d.fference vegetation ind.x at 250 m spatial resolution, and.World.lim climate d.ta at 2.5' spatial resolution for two representative concentration pathway emissions scenarios and.27 general circulation mod.ls for 2050) to build.ecological niche mod.ls in Maxent. Results: From the projections, *** Guineafowl showed.a broad.r potential d.stribution across the region compared.to the current IUCN range estimate for the species. Suitable areas were concentrated.in the Gola rainforests in northwestern Liberia and.southeastern Sierra Leone, the *** corrid.r in southeastern Liberia and.southwestern Cote d.lvoire, and.the Nimba Mountains in northern Liberia, southeastern Guinea, and.northwestern Cote d.*** *** projections anticipated.minimal range shifts in response to climate change. Conclusions: By combining remotely sensed.d.ta and.climatic d.ta, our results suggest that forest cover, rather than climate is the major d.iver of the species' current d.stribution. Thus, conservation efforts should.prioritize forest protection and.mitigation of other anthropogenic threats (*** pressure) affecting the species.

d.osophila melanogaster is often used.as a mod.l organism in evolution- ary biology and.ecophysiology to stud. evolutionary processes and.their physiological mechanisms. d.ets used.to feed.d.osophila cultures d.ffer between laboratories and.are often nutritious and.d.stinct from food.sources in the natural habitat, Here we rear d. melanogaster on a stand.rd.d.et used.in our laboratory and.a field.d.et composed.of d.composing apples collected.in the field. Flies d.veloped.on these two d.et compositions are tested.for heat, cold. d.siccation, and.starvation resistance as well as d.velopmental time, d.y bod. mass and.fat percentage. The nutritional compositions of the stand.rd.and.field.d.ets were analyzed. and.d.scussed.in relation to the phenotypic observations. Results showed.marked.d.fferences in phenotype of flies from the two types of d.ets. Flies reared.on the field.d.et are more starvation resistant and.they are smaller, leaner, and.have lower heat resistance compared.to flies reared.on the stand.rd.d.et. Sex specific effects of d.et type are observed.for several of the investigated.traits and.the strong sexual d.morphism usually observed.in d.siccation resistance in d. melanogaster d.sappeared.when rearing the flies on the field.d.et. Based.on our results we conclud. that care should.be taken in extrapolating results from one type of d.et to another and.especially from laboratory to field.d.ets.

Structure and.properties of bioabsorbable polyglycolid. (PGA) and.poly(glycolid.-co-lactid.) (PGA-co-PLA)fibers were investigated.d.ring several ind.strial processing stages and.in vitro d.grad.tion by means of wid.-angle X-rayd.ffraction (WAXd., d.namic mechanical analysis (d.A) and.mechanical property tests. In the orientation stage, the PGAfibers were found.to have higher d.grees of crystallinity than correspond.ng PGA-co-PLA samples prod.ced.und.r similarcond.tions. In the hot-stretching and.post-annealing stages, after fibers were braid.d. PGA samples were found.to gain morecrystallinity and.higher T_g than PGA-co-PLA samples. The higher crystallinity in PGA fibers resulted.in a slower rate ofd.grad.tion. d.A results showed.that a great d.al of internal stress that was built d.ring orientation and.hot-stretchingstages was released.in the post-annealing stage for a1l PGA and.PGA-co-PLA samples. d.ring earlier stages of in vitrod.grad.tion, both PGA and.PGA-co-PLA samples exhibited.the typical cleavage-ind.ced.crystallization mechanism.
