Shoot-level biomass allocation is affected by shoot type in Fagus sylvatica

Aims The present study aims(i)to examine if recently reported interspecific shoot-level biomass allocational trade-offs,*** trade-offs between leaf mass(LM)and stem mass(SM)and between leaf size and leaf number,hold intraspecifically and(ii)to explore whether those scaling relationships are independent of shoot type(*** *** shoots).Methods In order to address our questions,we used Fagus sylvatica saplings growing under a broad light range that were sampled in theWestern Carpathians Mountains(Slovakia).Important Findings We found that:(i)intraspecific shoot-level biomass allocational trade-offs differ from those reported interspecifically and that(ii)long and short shoots differ in biomass allocation scaling *** relationships with slopes statistically smaller than 1.0 or higher than-1.0,were found between SM and LM and between mean leafing intensity and individual leaf mass,respectively,in long *** contrast,isometric scaling was found in short *** suggests that leaf mass in short shoots is unaffected by shoot stem mass,in contrast to long *** shoots also had a larger fraction of biomass allocated to *** shoots,as has been observed in other shoot dimorphic species,are specialized,with short shoots specializing in carbon gain and long shoots in space acquisition.A greater shift in LM than in SM among species during speciation shifting from allometric intraspecific relationships to an isometric interspecific scaling relationship between those traits could explain the discrepancies between the outputs of the present intraspecific study and others similar *** study draws attention to the importance of considering shoot types in future studies dealing with allocation rules in species with dimorphic shoots.

Bulk lateral shearing interferometry for spatiotemporal study of time-varying ultrashort optical vortices

The spatiotemporal measurement of ultrashort laser beams usually involves techniques with complex set-ups or limited by instabilities that are unable to accurately retrieve the frequency-resolved wavefront. Here, we solve these drawbacks by implementing a simple, compact, and ultra-stable spatiotemporal characterization technique based on bulk lateral shearing spectral interferometry using a birefringent uniaxial crystal. We apply it to retrieve complex spatiotemporal structures by characterizing ultrafast optical vortices with constant and time-varying orbital angular momentum. This technique can operate in all the transparency range of the anisotropic elements,enabling the characterization in different spectral ranges like infrared, visible, or ultraviolet.

Three-dimensional analysis of the physiological foramen geometry of maxillary and mandibular molars by means of micro-CT

The aim of this study was to investigate the physiological foramen diameter, shape and distance between physiological and anatomical apex of maxillary and mandibular first and second molars. Accurate knowledge of the physiological foramina morphology; thus, inherent mechanical shaping technical hindrances, is decisive when taking the corresponding root canal final preparation decision. The morphological dimensions of a total of 1 727 physiological foramina were investigated by means of micro-computed tomography. Mean narrow and wide （to a high number, oval） diameters of the physiological foramen were 0.24, 0.22 and 0.33 mm and 0.33, 0.31 and 0.42 mm in mesiobuccal （MB）, distobuccal （DB） and palatal （P） roots in maxillary first molars; 0.24, 0.22 and 0.33 mm and 0.41, 0.33 and 0.44 in MB, DB, and P roots in maxillary second molars. Mandibular first molars showed mean narrow and wide diameters of 0.24 and 0.30 mm and of 0.39 and 0.46 mm in mesial （M） and distal （D） roots; second mandibular molars showed 0.25 and 0.31 mm and 0.47 mm in M and D roots. The mean distance between the physiological foramina and anatomical apex was 0.82, 0.81 and 1.02 mm and 0.54, 0.43 and 0.63 mm in MB, DB and P roots of the maxillary first and second molars, respectively. A mean distance of 0.95 mm （M） and 1.05 mm （D） in the first and 0.78 mm （M） and 0.81 mm （D） in the second mandibular molars was observed. Based on the results obtained, assumable recommendations for final preparation size of the physiological foramen were calculated. However, when taking into consideration, the resulting standard deviations of marginal errors must be cautiously considered when taking a final decision in clinical endodontic treatment.

Root canal morphology and configuration of 123 maxillary second molars by means of micro-CT

The aim of this study was to investigate the root canal configuration, accessory canals and number of main foramina of 123 maxillary second molars by means of micro-computed tomography. The teeth were scanned and reproduced with 3D software imaging. The root canal configuration and number of main foramina were evaluated by means of a four-digit system. The morphological complexity of human maxillary second molars is depicted by the number of accessory and connecting canals. The most frequently observed root canal configurations in the mesiobuccal root were 2-2-2/2 （19.5%）, 2-2-1/1 （14.6%） and 2-1-1/1 （13.0%）. A 1-1-1/1 configuration was observed in 93.5% and in 96.7% in the distobuccal and palatal roots, respectively. The MB1 mot canal had one accessory canal （18.7%）, and 8.9% of the MB2 root canal had one or two accessory canals. The distobuccal （11.3%） and palatal （14.6%） root canals had at least one accessory canal, and connecting canals were observed in 16.3% of mesiobuccal roots. The MB1, MB2, distobuccal and palatal root canals had one main foramen in 99.2%, 43.1%, 98.4% and 99.2% of samples, respectively. In the mesiobuccal root, one accessory foramen was detected in 14.6%, two were detected in 7.3%, and three were detected in 5.7%. The distobuccal root showed one or two accessory foramina in 9.1% of samples. The root canal configuration of maxillary second molars is quite heterogeneous; the mesiobuccal root has predominantly two root canal entrances （58.4%, 1 in 41.1%） with one main foramen （54.4%）. Two main foramina were observed in 43.0%. Morphological variations, connecting and accessory canals were observed in all apical thirds.

Efficient Handling of Lock Hand-off in DSM Multiprocessors with Buffering Coherence Controllers

Synchronization in parallel programs is a major performance bottleneck in multiprocessor systems. Shared data is protected by locks and a lot of time is spent on the competition arising at the lock hand-off. In order to be serialized, requests to the same cache line can either be bounced （nACKed） or buffered in the coherence controller. In this paper, we focus mainly on systems whose coherence controllers buffer requests. In a lock hand-off, a burst of requests to the same line arrive at the coherence controller. During lock hand-off only the requests from the winning processor contribute to progress of the computation, since the winning processor is the only one that will advance the work. This key observation leads us to propose a hardware mechanism we call request bypassing, which allows requests from the winning processor to bypass the requests buffered in the coherence controller keeping the lock line. We present an inexpensive implementation of request bypassing that reduces the time spent on all the execution phases of a critical section （acquiring the lock, accessing shared data, and releasing the lock） and which, as a consequence, speeds up the whole parallel computation. This mechanism requires neither compiler or programmer support nor ISA or coherence protocol changes. By simulating a 32-processor system, we show that using request bypassing does not degrade but rather improves performance in three applications with low synchronization rates, while in those having a large amount of synchronization activity （the remaining four）, we see reductions in execution time and in lock stall time ranging from 14% to 39% and from 52% to 7170, respectively. We compare request bypassing with a previously proposed technique called read combining and with a system that bounces requests, observing a significantly lower execution time with the bypassing scheme. Finally, we analyze the sensitivity of our results to some key hardware and software parameters.

The present study was conducted to evaluate the impact of bimetallic nanoparticles(nPs)of copper(Cu)and zinc(Zn)from Crotalaria longirostrata on the insect mortality and cell viability of Phenacoccus *** biosynthesis of bimetallic nanoparticles(Cu/Zn-nPs)from *** was confirmed by the presence of a single peak around 378 *** hydrodynamic diameter of the Cu/Zn nanoparticles varied from 59 to 119 nm and their zeta potential was found to be−30.90 *** EDX analysis showed a strong signal for Cu and Zn(8 and 8.6 keV,respectively).The Cu/Zn-nPs showed an effective insecticide activity against *** with 63%of insect mortality after 96 h ***,further studies about nanotoxicity of Cu/Zn-nPs from *** are needed to reveal the exact mechanism of nanoparticles toxicity in insects.

Examples of changes in the magnitude of the B-n>n>field after the heliosphere termination shock (TS) with both Voyager spacecraft (SC) are presented. The work focuses on similarities and differences in the observations at their in-situ measurements along divergent paths. The presented results were collected where the accuracy of the magnetometer is the highest. These locations are those wherein, four to seven times during the year, the SC performs about 330 minutes of slow rotations identified in the SC language as MAGROLs. They are next reviewed, with the understanding that after the TS, at MAGROLs, the solar wind (SW) flows appear to be mostly sub-magnetosonic and compressional in this region, region named helio-sheath (HS). This is a preliminary survey that uses 48 sec B-field averages. The time-intervals in this work fill gaps in the currently available studies for longer time intervals. The present study reinforces the view that in the HS after the TS the SW is most likely strongly compressional. Further we discuss the fact that observed fluctuation intensity-modes of the B-field in our time-ranges appear to be much more pronounced at the Voyager 2 path than at the Voyager 1 path.n>n>n>
