Bacteria form biofilms as an adaptive mechanism in response to environmental changes. Streptococcus mutans is the biofilm-forming bacterium that is primarily associated with dental caries. The expression of important genes by bacteria in biofilms is different from that of planktonic cells. Lectins are proteins that bind specifically to carbohydrates and may have important biological activities on bacterial cells, acting as antibacterial and anti-biofilm agents. ConM (Canavalia maritima lectin) is a protein that is able to inhibit the planktonic growth and biofilm formation of S. mutans. In this context, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of ConM and concanavalin A (ConA) on the expression of genes related to virulence and biofilm formation in S. mutans. The results showed that ConM significantly reduced the expression of genes encoding enzymes related to adhesion, formation and regulation of biofilms. On the contrary, ConA did not alter the expression of the genes studied. Because the two lectins have a high degree of similarity, the differences in the actions of ConM and ConA may be explained by the small structural differences in the carbohydrate recognition domain of the lectins.

Background:Through history acupuncture has been claimed to be effective relieving many kinds of ***-specific acute neck pain is defined as pain in the posterior and lateral aspect of the neck persisting for less than 3 months and not related to specific *** for acupuncture mechanism of action,some authors proposed that acupuncture with lifting and thrusting manipulation could improve efficacy of the acupuncture’s therapeutic ***,literature review showed that acupuncture with lifting and thrusting manipulation obtains better results than acupuncture without lifting and thrusting ***:To prove that acupuncture with lifting and thrusting manipulation has better therapeutic effect than acupuncture without manipulation treating non-specific acute neck ***:Thirty participants with non-specific acute neck pain were randomly divided into 2 groups;acupuncture with lifting-thrusting manipulation group and acupuncture without lifting-thrusting manipulation *** visual analogue scale（VAS）and the Northwick Park Questionnaire were used as outcome measures to measure pain evolution across ***:Experimental group showed greater pain reduction than control group with both outcome *** group showed 67.09%of pain reduction after treatment,while control group showed 52.25%of pain reduction tested with Visual analogue scale with statistical significance（p＜0.05）.Experimental group showed 64.44%of pain reduction after treatment,while control group showed 50.22%of pain reduction tested with Northwick Park Questionnaire with statistical significance（p＜0.05）.Conclusion:It can be concluded that acupuncture with lifting and thrusting manipulation produce greater reduction of pain than acupuncture without lifting and thrusting manipulation treating non-specific acute neck ***,both groups showed considerable neck pain *** may suggest that lifting and thrusting manipulation improve therapeutic

Immunoexpression of cyclooxygenase-2 in primary gastric carcinomas and lymph node metastases

AIM: To evaluate immunoexpression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) in primary gastric carcinomas and respective lymph node metastases. METHODS: Immunohistochemistry to analyze COX-2 expression was performed on tissue microarray slices obtained from 36 specimens of gastrectomy and satellite lymph nodes from patients with gastric carcinoma. RESULTS: Immunostaining was seen in most cases, and COX-2 expression was higher in lymph node me-tastases than in corresponding primary gastric tumors of intestinal, diffuse and mixed carcinomas, with a statistically signif icant difference in the diffuse histotype (P = 0.0108). CONCLUSION: COX-2 immunoexpression occurs frequently in primary gastric carcinomas, but higher expression of this enzyme is observed in lymph node metastases of the diffuse histotype.
