In the last decades, higher attention has been paid to olfactory perception in birds. As a consequence, a handful of avian species have been discovered to use olfaction in different contexts. Nevertheless, we still have a very limited knowledge about the use of odor cues in avian social life, particularly, in the case of songbirds. Here, we investigate if female house sparrows Passer domesticus show any preference for the odor of kin and nonkin conspecifics and we also test a possible role of familiarity based on male see nt in female choice. We performed the experiment with captive birds twice, duri ng the non breeding and breedi ng seas ons. Our results show that female house sparrows strongly avoided the odor of unrelated familiar (UF) males, both in the breeding and nonbreeding seasons. Our results suggest recognition for olfactory stimuli related to familiarity and kin ship. We suggest that avoidance for UF males is associated with previous experie nee in this species. Also, we provided further evidenee to the use of olfaction in passerine species by using a new experimental setup.

Peritoneal carcinomatosis is one of the most common routes of dissemination of colorectal cancer (CRC). It is encountered in 7% of patients at primary surgery, while it develops in about 4% to 19% of patients after curative surgery and in up to 44% of patients with recurrent CRC. Peritoneal involvement from colorectal malignancies has been considered traditionally as a manifestation of terminal disease, due to limited response to conventional surgical and chemotherapeutic treatments. In the past few years the introduction of cytoreductive surgery combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemoperfusion has shown promising results in selected patients. Currently, the surgical management of peritoneal surface malignancies of colonic origin with this combined locoregional therapy has resulted in a signif icant improvement in survival of these patients. However, further controlled studies will help to standardize indications and the technique of this locoregional therapy in order to achieve an improvement of morbidity and mortality rates.

Dear Editor,Soil quality is defined as"the capacity of a soil to function,within ecosystem and land use boundaries,to sustain productivity,maintain environmental quality,and promote plant and animal health"(Doran and Parkin 1994).In this context,soil functionality is fundamental to the biosphere and is highly dependent on the associated microbiota.Soil microorganisms are relevant for terrestrial ecosystem functioning,and understanding the functional changes of the biological community in diverse soils is relevant for monitoring soil quality and developing actions to mitigate soil degradation(Madsen,2008;Delgado-Baquerizo et al.,2021).

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) still remains a considerable challenge for surgeons.Surgery,including liver transplantation,is the most important therapeutic approach for patients with this disease.HCC is frequently diagnosed at advanced stages and has a poor prognosis with a high mortality rate even when surgical resection has been considered potentially curative.This brief report summarizes the current status of the management of this malignancy and includes a short description of new pharmacological approaches in HCC treatment.

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) represent important chronic conditions affecting the gastrointestinal tract in man.However,similar disorders are found in several animal species and the IBD affecting dogs are particularly important.These are encompassed by an umbrella of probably several different entities with common symptoms,some of which seem to share striking similarities with human conditions.This review will focus on the actual knowledge of IBD in dogs,and attempt to identify differences and similarities with human IBD conditions.

Lymphadenectomy of colorectal cancer is a decisive factor for the prognostic and therapeutic staging of the patient.For over 15 years,we have asked ourselves if the minimum number of 12 examined lymph nodes(LNs)was sufficient for the prevention of understaging.The debate is certainly still open if we consider that a limit of 12 LNs is still not the gold standard mainly because the research methodology of the first studies has been criticized.Moreover many authors report that to date both in the United States and Europe the number"12"target is uncommon,not adequate,or accessible only in highly specialised centres.It should however be noted that both the pressing nature of the debate and the dissemination of guidelines have been responsible for a trend that has allowed for a general increase in the number of LNs examined.There are different variables that can affect the retrieval of LNs.Some,like the surgeon,the surgery,and the pathology exam,are without question modifiable;however,other both patient and disease-related variables are non-modifiable and pose the question of whether the minimum number of examined LNs must be individually assigned.The lymph nodal ratio,the sentinel LNs and the study of the biological aspects of the tumor could find valid application in this field in the near future.

Pre-expanded bipedicled visor flap:an ideal option for the reconstruction of upper and lower lip defects postburn in Asian males

Background:Reconstruction of upper and lower lip subunits is a complicated and elusive challenge.For patients affected by defects involving upper and lower lip subunits,a technique able to reconstruct both aesthetic units with matched colour,sufficient contours and similar texture would be ideal.In this study,we present our experience with upper and lower lip reconstruction using the pre-expanded bipedicled visor flap.Methods:From January 2014 to January 2017,12 male patients presenting with defects of the upper and lower lip subunits were treated using this surgical technique.After a period of expansion of the scalp flap of over 6 months,the bipedicled visor flap was raised from both the parietal regions and rotated to resurface the defect.Delay and section of the pedicle were then performed.Results:Twelve male patients with postburn scars aged 22 to 48 years(mean:34 years)were successfully treated with no major complications.The donor site was closed primarily in all cases.Subsequent flap debulking and minor revisions were performed under local anaesthesia between 6 and 12 months postoperatively.Conclusions:The pre-expanded bipedicled visor flap provides an effective and reliable option for upper and lower lip reconstruction with excellent colour and texture.It is feasible to achieve these results simultaneously from a single donor site by using a pre-expanded bipedicled visor flap.

Feasibility of the Laparoscopic Total Colectomy with Ileal j-Pouch-Rectal Anastomosis in the Treatment of Chronic Constipation Refractory to Medical Therapy: Observations about a Case Report

In October 2012, a 29-year-old woman affected by chronic constipation underwent surgery for a laparoscopic total colectomy with ileal j-pouch-rectal anastomosis. After a precise instrumental work-up, the patient was selected as a potential candidate for the surgical treatment after failing to respond to all other medical treatment. During the first three months following the surgery, the patient recorded 3 - 4 daily evacuations of soft stool. After the third month, the number of evacuations stabilised at 2 -?3 a day, with formed stool, and no mention of incontinence or abdominal pain. Although the laparoscopic total colectomy with ileorectal anastomosis (TC with IRA) and the laparoscopically assisted subtotal colectomy with cecorectal anastomosis (SC with CRA) are the most frequently practiced procedures in the surgical treatment of chronic constipation, the laparoscopic colectomy with ileal j-pouch has shown in our experience to be a feasible and effective procedure, with similar results to the two aforementioned procedures in terms of morbidity, mortality and quality of life. In fact, like the first two, the total colectomy with ileal j-pouch has demonstrated the advantages of laparoscopic surgery: low invasiveness, less post-operative pain or ileus, respect of parietal integrity, reduced hospitalization and, lastly, a better cosmesis.
