Using remotely sensed and climate data to predict the current and potential future geographic distribution of a bird at multiple scales: the case of Agelastes meleagrides, a western African forest endemic

Background:Understanding geographic distributions of species is a crucial step in spatial planning for biodiversity conservation, particularly as regards changes in response to global climate *** information is especially important for species of global conservation concern that are susceptible to the effects of habitat loss and climate change. In this study, we used ecological niche modeling to assess the current and future geographic distributional potential of *** Guineafowl (Agelastes meleagrides)(Vulnerable) across West Africa. Methods:We used primary occurrence data obtained from the Global Biodiversity Information Facility and national parks in Liberia and Sierra Leone, and two independent environmental datasets (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer normalized difference vegetation index at 250 m spatial resolution, and Worldclim climate data at 2.5' spatial resolution for two representative concentration pathway emissions scenarios and 27 general circulation models for 2050) to build ecological niche models in Maxent. Results: From the projections, *** Guineafowl showed a broader potential distribution across the region compared to the current IUCN range estimate for the species. Suitable areas were concentrated in the Gola rainforests in northwestern Liberia and southeastern Sierra Leone, the *** corridor in southeastern Liberia and southwestern Cote d'lvoire, and the Nimba Mountains in northern Liberia, southeastern Guinea, and northwestern Cote d'*** *** projections anticipated minimal range shifts in response to climate change. Conclusions: By combining remotely sensed data and climatic data, our results suggest that forest cover, rather than climate is the major driver of the species' current distribution. Thus, conservation efforts should prioritize forest protection and mitigation of other anthropogenic threats (*** pressure) affecting the species.

Studies of biodiversity dynamics have been cast on either long(systematics)or short(ecology)time scales,leaving a gap in coverage for moderate time scales of decades to ***-scale biodiversity information resources now available offer opportunities to fill this gap for many parts of the world via detailed,quantitative comparisons of assemblage composition,particularly for regions without rich time series *** explore the possibility that such changes in avifaunas across the United States and Canada before and after the first three decades of marked global change(i.e.,prior to 1980 versus after 2010)can be reconstructed and characterized from existing primary biodiversity *** an illustration of the potential of this methodology for sites even in regions not as well sampled as the United States and Canada,we also explored changes at a single site in Mexico(Chichén-Itzá).We analyzed two large-scale datasets:one summarizing bird records in the United States and Canada before 1980,and one for the same region after *** used probabilistic inventory completeness analyses to identify sites that have avifaunas that have likely been inventoried more or less *** prepared detailed comparisons between the two time periods to analyze species showing distributional changes over the time period *** identified 139 sites on a 0.05°grid that were demonstrably well-inventoried before 1980 in the United States and Canada,of which 108 were also well-inventoried after *** presence/absence patterns between the two time periods for 601 bird species,we found significant spatial autocorrelation in overall avifaunal turnover(species gained and lost),but not in numbers of species *** noted potential northward retractions of ranges of several species with high-latitude(boreal)distributions,while other species showed dominant patterns of population loss,either rangewide(e.g.,Tympanuchus cupido)or regionally(e.g.,Thryomanes bewickii).We dev

Limitations in assessment of mucosal healing in inflammatory bowel disease

An emerging parameter to define the effectiveness of new therapeutic agents in clinical trials,and by extension,for use in day-to-day clinical practice has been labeled mucosal *** has been hypothesized that complete healing of the intestinal mucosa in inflammatory bowel diseases should result in reduced disease complications,reduced hospitalization and reduced surgical *** implication,the natural history of inflammatory bowel disease might then be altered. Surveillance for colitis-associated colon neoplasia

The risk of developing colon cancer is increased in colitis patients, particularly if the disease is extensive and its duration long-standing. Endoscopic guidelines have been developed with the goal of detecting early neoplastic changes prior to development of advanced malignancy. Unfortunately, the natural history of this superimposed neoplastic process in colitis appears to be very heterogeneous and poorly understood. Moreover, there are numerous confounding variables in colitis patients that limit accurate assessment of the surveillance effectiveness of colonoscopy and multi-site biopsy protocols. Although the clinical challenge posed to even the most experienced clinicians remains significant, evolving methods of endoscopic imaging may facilitate better evaluation of this highly select group of patients.

Reproductive changes associated with celiac disease

Celiac disease is a mucosal disorder of the small intestine that may be triggered by dietary exposure to gluten in genetically-susceptible *** disorder is often associated with diarrhea,malabsorption and weight loss along with other extra-intestinal *** changes have been described,including impaired fertility and adverse pregnancy outcomes possibly related to immune-mediated mechanisms or nutrient *** possible pathogenetic factors that may alter placental function include maternal celiac disease autoantibodies binding to placental transglutaminase,and genetic mutations that may facilitate microthrombus *** noting activation during pregnancy or the puerperium may be important,and suggest that celiac disease may also be hypothetically precipitated by maternal exposure to one or more fetal antigens.

Mesenteric lymph node cavitation syndrome

The mesenteric lymph node cavitation syndrome consists of central necrosis of mesenteric lymph nodes and may occur with either celiac disease or a sprue-like intestinal disease that fails to respond to a gluten-free diet. Splenic hypofunction may also be present. The cause is not known but its development during the clinical course of celiac disease is usually indicative of a poor prognosis for the intestinal disorder, a potential for signif icant compli-cations including sepsis and malignancy, particularly T-cell lymphoma, and signif icant mortality. Modern abdominal imaging modalities may permit earlier detection in celiac disease so that earlier diagnosis and improved under-standing of its pathogenesis may result.

The ubiquitin ligase Siah2 is revealed as an accomplice of the androgen receptor in castration resistant prostate cancer

The androgen receptor （AR） remains the primary molecular target forprostate cancer （PCa） treatment and for development of novel therapies. Profiling and other analyses of human prostate adenocarcinoma have shown that the AR is still functional during latestage disease in the absence of circulating hormone fol lowing castration therapy. The molecular mechanisms that operate during this ＇cas tration resistant＇ phase are still not well understood. Qi et al. have now implicated the ubiquitin ligase Siah2 as an important mediator of AR action in castration resis tant prostate cancer （CRPC）. Siah2 was found to target repressed AR chromatin complexes for degradation, resulting in activation of ARregulated genes involved in tumor cell proliferation, cell motility and lipid metabolism. The authors show a requirement for Siah2 activity for PCa cell growth under conditions of low androgen, and also that targeting Siah2 results in tumor growth suppression under castrate conditions. These findings identify a new mechanism of AR regulation in progressing disease as well as a novel enzymatic target for therapeutic intervention. The AR is a wellstudied hormone receptor that belongs to the large nuclear receptor gene superfamily. AR is activated by androgen binding （principally 5：~dihydrotestosterone, 5DHT）, which elicits changes in AR resident cytosolic complexes, translocation of the receptor to cell nuclei, formation of multiprotein transcriptional complexes onchromatin, and activation or repression of gene expression. Experiments with in vivo model systems have provided evidence that virtually all physiologic processes affected by androgens require the AR as a mediator of molecular effects at the gene level.1 AR is widely expressed beyond the reproductive systems and is believed to play important roles in several nonreproductive tissues, including muscle and brain. Risk factors in familial forms of celiac disease

Celiac disease has been reported in up to 2% of some European populations. A similar risk has been identified in the America and Australia where immigration of Eu-ropeans has occurred. Moreover, an increasing number of celiac disease patients are being identified in many Asian countries, including China and India. Finally, celiac disease has also been detected in Asian immigrants and their descendants to other countries, such as Canada. Within these so-called "general" celiac populations, however, there are specific high risk groups that have an even higher prevalence of celiac disease. Indeed, the single most important risk factor for celiac disease is having a first-degree relative with already-defined celiac disease, particularly a sibling. A rate up to 20% or more has been noted. Risk is even greater if a specific family has 2 siblings affected, particularly if a male carries the human leukocyte antigen-DQ2. Both structural changes in the small bowel architecture occur along with func-tional changes in permeability, even in asymptomatic first-degree relatives. Even if celiac disease is not evident, the risk of other autoimmune disorders seems significantly increased in first-degree relatives as well as intestinal lymphoma. Identification of celiac disease is important since recent long-term studies have shown that the mortality of celiac disease is increased, if it is unrecognized and untreated.

Multifocal stenosing ulceration of the small intestine

Several reports have described an apparently uncommon clinicopathological disorder that is characterized by multifocal stenosing small-intestinal *** to Crohn's disease,the ulcers are not transmural and typically remain shallow,and involve only the mucosa and *** disorder seems to be localized in the jejunum and proximal ileum only,and not the distal ileum or *** nonspecif ic inflammatory changes are present without giant cells or other typical features of granulomatous *** patients present clinically with recurrent obstructive events that usually respond to steroids,surgical resection,or *** the development of newer imaging modalities to visualize the small-intestinal mucosa,such as double-balloon enteroscopy,improved understanding of the long-term natural history of this apparently distinctive disorder should emerge.
