Fishmeal is the most preferred source of protein in aquafeeds, but it is expensive and scarce. Hence, Achatina fulica meat meal (AFM), which is much less preferred for human consumption out of three species of African giant land snails, was tested as a fishmeal substitute for Clarias gariepinus growth. Five iso-nitrogenous and iso-calorific diets were formulated, in which AFM substituted fish meal at 0% (control or Diet A), 25% (Diet B), 50% (Diet C), 75% (Diet D) and 100% (Diet e). These dietary treatments were each replicated thrice in a completely randomized design experiment, using 36-L plastic tanks in which the fish were fed daily rations corresponding to 5% of their body weight, for 8 weeks. Water quality parameters in the tanks were monitored. Proximate analyses were conducted on the fish meal, snail meal and experimental diets before the feeding trials. Cost-benefit analysis of the different diets was performed. The crude protein content of AFM (69.18%) was significantly higher than that of fish meal (55.81%). There was no significant difference (P > 0.05) in the mean weight gain, specific growth rate, feed conversion ratio, protein efficiency ratio and survival rate in fish fed Diet A and Diet B. The best protein efficiency ratio (0.77) was recorded in fish fed Diet B. Furthermore, the survival rate of fish increased with increased levels of AFM substitution. Water quality parameters were within a suitable range for tropical fish culture, indicating that the AFM did not pollute the water. The fish fed 25% AFM diet significantly (P Clarias gariepinus diets at a 25% substitution level. The aquaculture industry can thus exploit the availability of this feed resource.

Assessing the efficacy of Wheat-Soybean Based Intercropping System at Different Plant Densities in Bambili, Cameroon

Wheat is one of the most important cereals in the world, serving as a staple for millions globally. In the wake of the geopolitical crisis between Russia and Ukraine, it has become incumbent for many countries to invest in wheat production. Improving cropping systems for wheat production is paramount. Intercropping cereals with legumes has tremendous advantages. Therefore, this study was designed to optimize wheat production by intercropping it with soybean at different densities. Between March and August 2023, a randomized complete block design trial was conducted in Bambili, North West of Cameroon with treatments T1 (wheat monocrop at 200,000 plants ha−1), T2 (soybean monocrop at 250,000 plants ha−1), T3 (200,000 wheat and 125,000 soybean ha−1), T4 (100,000 wheat and 250,000 soybean ha−1), T5 (200,000 wheat and 250,000 soybean ha−1) and T6 (100,000 wheat and 125,000 soybean ha−1). Results revealed that growth parameters of wheat were not significantly influenced by monocrop or intercrop. The yield of wheat was significantly higher in the monocrop than the intercrop treatments, with slight variation amongst the intercrop treatments. Soybean yield was higher in the monocrop than in the intercrop, with no variations amongst the intercrop treatments. Only the land equivalence ratio (LeR) for T5 was greater than 1.0. The competitive ratio for T5 was 0.54 for wheat and 1.90 for soybean, comparatively lower than the other monocrop treatments. Intercropping wheat and soybean at 200,000:250,000 ratio is recommended.

AIM:The present study investigates the antioxidant effect of two extracts(hydrolyzed and non-hydrolyzed)of five herbs and eight spices in the prevention of LDL+VLDL oxidation promoted by cupric ***:The polyphenolic concentrations of these extracts were measured using Folin-Ciocalteu *** antioxidant quality was analyzed by the determination of lag-time,concentration of polyphenol that will inhibit 50%of oxidation of LDL+VLDL(IC50)and phenol antioxidant index(PAOXI). ReSULTS:The hydrolyzed extracts had significant higher polyphenol concentration,longer lag-time,lower IC50 and higher PAOXI than the non-hydrolyzed extracts(Ped extract contains better quantity and quality polyphenolic antioxidant than the non-hydrolyzed *** hydrolyzed and non-hydrolyzed extracts were better antioxidants than Vitamin e in the inhibition of LDL+VLDL ***:The reaction rate and concentration of conjugated diene formed suggested that all the extracts had similar reaction mechanism in the prevention of copper mediated LDL+VLDL oxidation.

Reliability of Thyroid Imaging Reporting and Data System(TIRADS)Classification in Differentiating Benign from Malignant Thyroid Nodules

Background: Ultrasonography (US) is the best diagnostic tool in the initial assessment of thyroid nodule. Giving its appropriateness and accessibility, ultrasound-based thyroid imaging reporting and data systems (TIRADS) classifications have been developed with main goal to standardize reporting and facilitate communication between practitioners, and to indicate when fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) should be performed. Objective: To determine the reliability of Russ’ modified TIRADS classification in predicting thyroid malignancy. Materials and Methods: It was a cross sectional study carried out at Centre Hospitalier de Lagny, Marne La Vallée (France). Consecutive records of patients with focal thyroid nodules on ultrasound (US) for which US-guided FNAB was performed and pathology results were available, from January 2007 to August 2012, were selected for review. The risk of malignancy of each TIRADS category was determined and correlation with pathology assessed. Statistical performances of some US features were also assessed. The threshold for statistical significance was set at 0.05. Results: A total of 430 records of patients were eligible. Twenty-three out of 430 (5.3%) nodules were malignant. The risk of malignancy of the TIRADS categories were as follows: TIRADS2 0%, TIRADS3 2.2%, TIRADS4A 5.9%, TIRADS4B 57.9%, TIRADS5 100% (Gamma statistic = 0.85;Spearman correlation = 0.30, Pearson’s R = 0.37, p Conclusion: Russ’ modified TIRADS classification is reliable in predicting thyroid malignancy. More evidence is nevertheless necessary for widespread adoption and use.

Assessing the Trace Metal Content of Groundwater in the Bakassi Peninsular, Onshore Rio del Rey, Akwa-Mundemba, Cameroun

The present work assesses the trace metal content in groundwater from Akwa-Mundemba, Bakassi Peninsular in Cameroon. 12 groundwater samples were analyzed using Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectroscopy ICP-MS. Field measurement of physicochemical parameters was determined. R-mode statistical analysis;Pearson’s Correlation Analysis (PCA) together with Hierarchical Cluster Analysis (HCA) between the trace metals and the physico-chemical parameters was carried out. Ten indices were determined: Four trace metal hazard indices;the average daily dose ADD (2.5e—07 to 0.2)) carcinogenic risks CR (2.1e—06 to 9.9e—04) and the non-carcinogenic risk hazard quotient HQ (5.7e—04 to 0.78) which yields the hazard indices HI (0.1 - 0.78), and six trace metal pollution indices;Degree of contamination DC (—13.53 to —11.02), enrichment factor eF (0.26 - 35.47), ecological risk factor er (—29.92 - 7.04), Potential ecological risk index RI (-61.2-43.43), Pollution load index PLI (—0.01 - 0.04) and Geo-accumulation index Igeo (4.8e-09-3.0). From health risk indices and pollution evaluation indices on trace metals, the groundwater in Akwa-Mundemba area is safe for drinking. The enrichment factors show that the sources of the trace metals are from geogenic and anthropogenic processes. Arsenic, Lead and Vanadium are enriched although they are below the hazard risk values;this shows they have pollution potential that could be attributed to weathering and agricultural wastes. The severity of metal toxicity is governed by several factors, such as dose, nutrition, age, and even life style. Therefore, these low trends might not guarantee the complete absence of human health risks. Generally, from risk assessment on trace metals using risk indices in the analyzed groundwater samples might not cause any health risk.
