The discrete element model （DEM） is a very promising modelling strategy for two-phase granular systems. However, owing to a lack of experimental measurements, validation of numerical simulations of two-phase granular systems is still an important issue. In this study, a small two-dimensional gas- fluidized bed was simulated using a discrete element model. The dimensions of the simulated bed were 44mm × 10mm × 120 mm and the fluidized particles had a diameter dp = 1.2 mm and density ρp = 1000 kg/m^3. The comparison between DEM simulations and experiments are performed on the basis of time-averaged voidage maps. The drag-law of Beetstra et al. [Beetstra, R., van der Hoef, M.A., ＆ Kuipers,J. A. M. （2007b）. Drag force of intermediate Reynolds number flow past mono- and bidispersed arrays of spheres. AIChE Journal, 53,489-501 ] seems to give the best results. The simulations are fairly insensitive to the coefficient of restitution and the coefficient of friction as long as some route of energy dissipation during particle-particle and particle-wall contact is provided. Changing the boundary condition of the gas phase at the side-walls from zero-slip to full-slip does not affect the simulation results. Care is to be taken that the cell sizes are chosen so that a reasonable number of particles can be found in a fluid cell.

hanging-drop method has been widely used to fabricate three-dimensional (3D) in vitro tissue models due to its advantages such as being easy to perform, inexpensive, and permitting precise control of cell spheroid formation. The geometry of hanging drop may play a critical role on the formation of cell spheroids, which, however, has not been explored. In this study, we developed a modified hanging-drop platform that enables the production of cell spheroids in a high-throughput manner by controlling hanging drop geometry with defined spreading ring. The surface tension force is proportional to the spreading ring and gravitational force is determined by the droplet volume, and the geometry can be determined by the balance between surface tension and gravity.β-TC-6 cell spheroids with optimized diameters were fabricated as 3D in vitro islet models. The models show morphology similar to primary islets and have functionality that more closely resembles primary islets than two-dimensional cell culture. The developed platform holds great potential for engineering well-controlled in vitro tissue models for various applications such as physiological and pathological studies, drug screening, as well as transplantation for treatment purpose.

Background: Extremes of reproductive age are associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes. Although varieties of adverse outcomes are reported across international studies, it has been difficult to compare the results due to inconsistencies in design partly due to arbitrary age cut offs for low and high risk groups. This study utilized the international consensus age cut offs to separate low and high risk age groups and compared pregnancy outcomes among them. Methods: Data of all deliveries at the Muhimbili National Hospital in Dar es salaam, Tanzania from 1st January, 2005 to 31st December, 2011 were analyzed retrospectively and compared using IBM sPss statistics 19. Ages 12 - 17 years (teenage) and 35 - 50 years were classified as high risk and 18 - 34 years as low risk. We treated the presence of any prenatal complication as primary outcome and intra/postpartum variables as secondary outcomes. Chi square test was used to compare proportions and t-test for continuous data among two independent groups. ANOVA with Bonferroni adjustment was used to compare differences in means across age groups. Binary logistic regression analyses were performed to determine odds of developing primary and secondary outcomes with age as an independent (categorical) variable. P-values of 0.05 or less were interpreted as statistically significant. Results: In total 65,453 singleton deliveries were identified of which 64,818 (99%) were analyzed including 1680 (2.6%) teenage and 7961 (12.3%) deliveries at 35 - 50 years. Teenage deliveries had progressively declined from 39/1000 in2005 to 16/1000 in2011 incontrast to a rise from 103/1000 to 145/1000 deliveries for the 35 - 50 years. Across all age groups, prenatal complications were least for teenage (11.4%) and most for 35 - 50 years (32.7%, χ2 = 51.3, P e minutes (OR = 2.2, 95% CI: 1.9 - 2.6) and low birth weight (OR = 1.6, 95% CI: 1.4 - 1.8). Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the commonest primary malignancy of the liver. It usually occurs in the setting of chronic liver disease and has a poor prognosis if untreated. Orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) is a suitable therapeutic option for early,unresectable HCC particularly in the setting of chronic liver disease. following on from disappointing initial results,the seminal study by Mazzaferro et al in 1996 established OLT as a viable treatment for HCC. In this study,the "Milan criteria" were applied achieving a 4-year survival rate similar to OLT for benign disease. since then various groups have attempted to expand these criteria whilst maintaining long term survival rates. The technique of living donor liver transplantation has evolved over the past decade,particularly in Asia,and published outcome data is comparable to that of OLT. This article will review the evidence,indications,and the future direction of liver transplantation for liver cancer.

为了研究污泥龄对活性污泥系统处理微量磺胺类药物(5μg/L)的影响,共运行了4个试验室规模(3L)的序批式活性污泥反应器(sBR),其污泥龄分别为2、8、14、20d。批次摇瓶试验通过设置3个工况(正常运行,加入生物抑制剂,无微生物)来讨论在1个运行周期(8h)中对浓度为5μg/L磺胺甲恶唑的吸附作用、生物降解作用和挥发损失。试验结果显示对磺胺甲恶唑的总去除量为2.14±0.60μg/g ss,吸附作用占总去除量的63%;磺胺嘧啶为1.14±0.63μg/g ss,83%;磺胺间二甲氧为2.33±0.67μg/g ss,35%;磺胺甲基嘧啶为2.45±0.85μg/g ss,55%;磺胺类药物的去除效果与污泥的污泥龄有着非常显著的关系(psRT=2d的反应器由于存在大量的丝状菌,使得单位污泥对磺胺甲恶唑去除率大大高于其他3个反应器。通过分子生物学分析,发现微生物群落结构的变化不大,从而说明了影响磺胺类药物处理效果的主要因素在于更强的吸附能力,更高的污泥浓度。
