Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon in rain and street runoff in Amman, Jordan

Concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAhs) were determined in the rain and street runoff samples from two sites in the vicinity of Amman City during the pluvial period 1999—2000. The results showed that elevated levels of PAhs were detected in the city center(site 1) than the residential area(site 2) and that the levels were higher in street runoff than rain samples of the same sites. The highest concentration of PAhs in both street runoff and rain samples were observed in the first rainy month(November 1999) which indicated a wash out effect of PAhs originating from vehicular emission accumulated during the long dry summer season before sampling. Within the investigated cold winter seasons, fluctuations in PAhs concentration were observed. The variation was attributed to the fossil combustion for heating purposes and to intervals between rainfalls: as the longer the intervals between rains were, the higher the PAh concentration were. Removal of PAhs from the atmosphere through precipitation over the investigated period varied with time and places depending on the amount of rainfall where higher rainfall removed higher amount of PAhs from the atmosphere. The amount of PAhs washed out through precipitation was estimated to be around 14.8 mg/m 2 and 21.1 mg/m 2 for sites 1 and 2 respectively.

Detection of virulent strains of helicobacter pylori and its relation to symptoms and signs in children

Objective:To detect the prevalence of helicobacter polori(***) in a group of pediatric patients complaining of gastrointestinal disorders,and to identify the virulent strains of h. pylori and its relation to peptic ***:The study included 60 patients(41 males and 19 females),aged from 6 months to 14 years,with complaining of different gastrointestinal *** IgG antibodies were *** examination of the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum was done in all patients using a fibreoptic *** addition, gastric antral biopsies were taken for diagnosis of *** infection in the following test: rapid urease test,histopathologic examination and *** cytotoxin assay of virulent strains was *** infection was diagnosed if 3 or more tests for diagnosis were found to be ***:33 out of 60 patients(55%) was positive.12(20%) patients had positive toxin producing strains(virulent strains).Virulent strain had a significantly closer relationship with recurrent abdominal pain,while no difference was found in other symptoms. Age of patients showed a highly significant positive correlation with virulent *** strain. histopathological finding revealed that oesophagitis was significandy common in patients with negative *** and histopathological findings revealed that virulent strain had a significandy higher gastritis and oesophagitis ***:Infection by virulent strains of *** in children is not uncommon:It is associated with endoscopic and histopathologic *** cases infected with virulent strain showed positive results by using rapid urease test,culture and IgG antibodies.

Designing terraces for the rainfed farming region in Iraq using the RUSLE and hydraulic principles

The rainfed region in Iraq comprises an area of more than 5 million ha of forest,grazing and farmland *** the plains,the region suffers from moderate to severe water erosion due mainly to overgrazing and land *** to population growth and the shortage in water resources,an expansion in land used for agriculture in the region is *** is an option when utilizing sloping land for agricultural production.A terrace design criterion was developed for the region in which terrace spacing was determined using the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation(RUSLE);terrace channel specifications were determined using conventional hydraulic *** showed that terracing is feasible on rolling and hilly sloping land in the high rainfall zone(seasonal rainfall 4600 mm)where economic crops are grown to offset the high cost of terrace construction and *** the medium and low rainfall zones(seasonal rainfall 400–600 mm and 300–400 mm),terracing for water erosion control is generally not needed on cultivated land less than 10%in slope where wheat and barley crops are normally grown;however,pioneer research projects are needed to assess the feasibility of terraces of the level(detention)type to conserve rain water in these two zones for a more successful rainfed farming venture.

Seismic hazard assessment of Western Coastal Province of Saudi Arabia:deterministic approach

Seismic hazard assessment is carried out by utilizing deterministic approach to evaluate the maximum expected earthquake ground motions along the Western Coastal Province of Saudi Arabia. The analysis is accomplished by incorporating seismotectonic source model, determination of earthquake magnitude （mmax）, set of appropriate ground motion predictive equations （GmPE）, and logic tree sequence. The logic tree sequence is built up to assign weight to ground motion scaling relationships. Contour maps of ground acceleration are generated at different spectral periods. These maps show that the largest ground motion values are emerged in northern and southern regions of the western coastal province in Saudi Arabia in comparison with the central region.

This work provides the design and analysis of a single layer,linearly polarized millimeter wave reflectarray antenna with mutual coupling *** analysis was carried out at 26Ghz design frequency using the simulations of the reflectarray unit cells as well as the periodic reflectarray *** simulated results were verified by the scattering parameter and far-fieldmeasurements of the unit cell and periodic arrays,*** agreement between the simulated and measured results was observed in all the *** from the unit cells and reflectarray,the waveguide and horn antenna were also fabricated to be used in the *** measured scattering parameter results of the proposed circular ring unit cells provided a maximum reflection loss of 2.8 dB with phase errors below 10°.On the other hand,the measured far-field results of the 20×20 reflectarray antenna provided a maximum gain of 26.45 dB with a maximum 3 dB beam width of 12°and 1 dB gain drop bandwidth of 13.1%.The performance demonstrated by the proposed reflectarray antenna makes it a potential candidate to be used in modern-day applications such as 5th Generation(5G)and 6th Generation(6G)communication systems.

helicobacter pylori and gastric cancer in the middle East: A new enigma?

The middle East is the home of ethnic groups from three main backgrounds: Semitic (Arabs and Jews), Indo-European (Persians and Kurdish) and Turkic (Turkish and Turkmens). Its geographic location, which has been under continuous influences from Asia, Europe and Africa, has made it an ideal site for epidemiological studies on helicobacter pylori (h. pylori) infection and genotyping. The gastric cancer rate differs in this region from very high in Iran (26.1/105) to low in Israel (12.5/105) and very low in Egypt (3.4/105). Epidemiological studies showed that the prevalence of h. pylori is almost similar in those countries with a high level of infection in childhood. Importantly, the frequency of vacA s1 and m1 regions and cagA+ genotypes were higher in non Semitic populations who inhabit the North than Semitic populations, the inhabitants of Southern parts of the middle East. h. pylori infection prevalence, distribution pattern of virulence factors, diet and smoking could not have explained the difference in cancer rate. This reflects the multifactorial aetiology of gastric cancer and suggests that h. pylori infection does not always directly correlate with the risk for gastrointestinal disease, such as gastric cancer. Further detailed investigations and international comparative studies of each risk factor needto be performed to investigate whether this represents a true enigma.

Gamma-ray measurements of natural radioactivity in sedimentary rocks from Egypt

The aim of this study was to measure concentrations and distributions of natural radionuclides occurring in rocks. The activity concentrations (Bq·kg-1) of the naturally occurring radionuclides 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K in sedi- mentary rock samples from Eastern Desert (Um El-huetat), Nile Valley (Gebel Owina) and from southwest Sinai (Wadi Ghweiba) were measured using a high-purity germanium detector. The samples under investigation (clay, shale and sandstone) were used as raw materials in the construction industry (bricks, ceramics, cement, fillers, etc.). Though the sediments of Egypt have already been investigated in the geological and mineralogical aspects, it is necessary to investigate the natural radioactivity in order to complete their classification. The average concentration values of 226Ra, 232Th, 40K in the surveyed samples were 47 ± 7 , 21± 5, 393±19 ***-1 (clay); 23 ± 5, 30 ± 6, 563 ± 24 ***-1 (shale); and 17 ± 4, 14 ± 4, 299 ± 17 ***-1 (sandstone), respectively. All sediment samples have radium equivalent activities ranging from 55 to 115 Bq·kg-1, lower than the limit set in the OECD Report (370 Bq·kg-1). The overall mean outdoor terrestrial gamma dose rates fluctuate from 28 to 55 nGy·h-1. The external gamma radiation dose due to natural radionuclides present in the samples have been computed and compared with the global averages. In terms of the radiation safety, the natural radioactivity of the sediment in Egypt is below the recommended limits of the gamma dose rate. Therefore, they can be used for all kinds of public buildings.
