Cultivation of microalgae for biodiesel production:A review on upstream and downstream processing

Fluctuating market price of fossil fuel and overwhelming emission of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere have resulted in climate change and have been a global concern in this decade. Hence, biodiesel has become an alternative option to fossil diesel as it is renewable and environmentally friendly. Nevertheless, this alternative fuel that is usually derived from terrestrial oil crops will cause shortage in food supply and deforestation if mass production is realized. In recent years, cultivation of aquatic microorganism(particularly microalgae) to produce biodiesel is considered as a practical solution due to their high growth rate and ability to synthesize large quantity of lipid within their cell. However, the development of energy and cost-efficiency of microalgae cultivation system are the main issues in producing renewable microalgae biodiesel. Of late, wastewater or organic compost has been used as the cultivation medium as it can provide sufficient nutrients to sustain microalgae *** cultivation method and system are vitally important as these factors undoubtedly affect the final microalgae biomass and lipid yield. In this review, the cultivation system of microalgae, nutrients demanded for microalgae production, cell harvesting and drying, microalgae oil extraction, and utilization of microalgae biomass for biodiesel production are introduced and discussed. It is anticipated to convey clearer perspectives in upstream and downstream processes in microalgae-derived biodiesel production.

BACKGROUND Lymphangioma is a benign lesion that rarely involves the gastrointestinal tract,especially in *** bowel lymphangioma is a rare cause of gastrointestinal ***,we report a case of an adult diagnosed with jejunal lymphangioma presenting with melena,anemia and *** also summarize and analyze all 23 reported cases from 1961 to 2019,and propose an algorithm for identification and management of small bowel *** SUMMARY A case of a 29-year-old woman presented with persistent melena and irondeficiency anemia,accompanied by *** lesions were found in the initial workup with esophagogastroduodenoscopy,colonoscopy and computed tomography(CT)***,capsule endoscopy and double-balloon enteroscopy revealed a 3 cm×2 cm primary lesion with intensive white lymphatic dilatatory changes and visible fresh blood stains,accompanied by a small satellite *** patient underwent complete surgical resection of these lesions,and histopathological examination confirmed a diagnosis of cavernous lymphangioma of the *** patient showed no evidence of disease at the time of this *** We recommend CT,capsule endoscopy and enteroscopy to identify the lesions of *** surgery with histological diagnosis is an ideal curative method.

Aspirin and pravastatin reduce lectin-like oxidized low density lipoprotein receptor-1 expression, adhesion molecules and oxidative stress in human coronary artery endothelial cells

Background Oxidative stress and inflammation are important steps in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. We postulated that therapeutic concentrations of aspirin and pravastatin, especially in combination, may suppress oxidative stress and inflammation in endothelial cells, and this concept was examined in human coronary artery endothelial cells （HCAECs）. Methods Human coronary artery endothelial cells were cultured and treated with oxidized-low density lipoprotein （ox-LDL, 60 ug/ml for 24 hours） alone, or pre-treated with aspirin （1, 2 or 5 mmol/L）, pravastatin （1, 5 or 10 umol/L） or their combination （1 mmol/L aspirin and 5umol/L pravastatin）, followed by ox-LDL treatment. After respective treatment, superoxide anion production, p38 mitogen activated protein kinase and transcription factor NF-KB activation, protein expression of lectin-like ox-LDL receptor-1 （LOX-1） and adhesion molecules, and monocyte adhesion were measured. Results Ox-LDL treatment greatly elicited its receptor LOX-1 expression, superoxide anion production and inflammatory response, which were minimally affected by low concentration of aspirin （1 mmol/L） or pravastatin （5umol/L）, but were markedly decreased by their combination. Activation of p38 mitogen activated protein kinase and NF-KB, the expression of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 and monocyte chemotactic protein-I, which were only mildly affected by aspirin or pravastatin alone, were significantly attenuated by their combination. As a consequence, monocyte adhesion to endothelial cells was markedly attenuated by the combination of the two agents. Well-known anti-oxidants a-tocopherol and y-tocopherol had similar inhibitory effects on ox-LDL-mediated oxidative stress and LOX-1 expression as well as monocyte adhesion as did the combination of aspirin and pravastatin. Ulcerative colitis(UC) is an inflammatory disease that mainly affects the colon and rectum. It is believed that genetic factors, host immune system disorders, intestinal microbiota dysbiosis, and environmental factors contribute to the pathogenesis of UC. however, studies on the role of intestinal microbiota in the pathogenesis of UC have been inconclusive. Studies have shown that probiotics improve intestinal mucosa barrier function and immune system function and promote secretion of anti-inflammatory factors, thereby inhibiting the growth of harmful bacteria in the intestine. Fecal microbiota transplantation(FMT) can reduce bowel permeability and thus the severity of disease by increasing the production of short-chain fatty acids, especially butyrate, which help maintain the integrity of the epithelial barrier. FMT can also restore immune dysbiosis by inhibiting Th1 differentiation, activity of T cells, leukocyte adhesion, and production of inflammatory factors. Probiotics and FMT are being increasingly used to treat UC, but their use is controversial because of uncertain efficacy. Here, we briefly review the role of intestinal microbiota in thepathogenesis and treatment of UC.
