This manuscript collects in a joint and orderly manner the existing evidence at the present time about postoperative treatment with radiotherapy in non-small cell lung *** also systematically reviews the current evidence,the international recommendations in the most relevant guidelines,the most controversial aspects in clinical and pathological staging,the specific technical aspects of radiotherapy treatment,and also collects all the potential risk factors that have been postulated as significant in the prognosis of these patients,evaluating the possibility of segmenting a particularly sensitive subpopulation with a high risk of relapse on which an adjuvant treatment with radiotherapy could have an impact on their clinical ***,currently active trials that aspire to provide more evidence on this topic are reviewed.

Small cell lung cancer(SCLC)accounts for approximately 20%of all lung *** main treatment is chemotherapy(Ch).However,the addition of radiotherapy significantly improves overall survival(OS)in patients with non-metastatic SCLC and in those with metastatic SCLC who respond to *** cranial irradiation reduces the risk of brain metastases and improves OS in both metastatic and non-metastatic *** 5-year OS rate in patients with limited-stage disease(non-metastatic)is slightly higher than 30%,but less than 5%in patients with extensive-stage disease(metastatic).The present clinical guidelines were developed by Spanish radiation oncologists on behalf of the Oncologic Group for the Study of Lung Cancer/Spanish Society of Radiation Oncology to provide a current review of the diagnosis,planning,and treatment of *** guidelines emphasise treatment fields,radiation techniques,fractionation,concomitant treatment,and the optimal timing of Ch and ***,we discuss the main indications for reirradiation in local recurrence.

Accommodation in human eye models:a comparison between the optical designs of Navarro,Arizona and Liou-Brennan

AIM： To simulate and compare accommodation in accommodative and non-accommodative human eye ***： Ray tracing and optical design program was used. Three eye models were designed and studied： the Navarro, the Arizona and the Liou-Brennan. In order to make the Navarro and Liou-Brennan models to accommodate, specific geometric parameters of the models were altered with values that were chosen from the literature. For the Arizona model, its’ mathematical functions for accommodation were used for the same accommodative demands. The simulation included four distances of accommodation for each model： at infinity, 3, 1 and 0.5 *** results were diffraction images of a “letter F” for graphical comparison, spot diagrams on the retinal field and Modulation Transfer Function （MTF） ***：Zernike coefficients for the aberrations, Airy disk diameter, root mean square （RMS） error diameter and total axial length of the model were provided from the program. These were compared between them in all distances. The Navarro model had the smallest axial length change as a simple model. The Arizona did not change its axial length because it is designed to be accommodative. The Liou-Brennan model had different results concerning the aberrations because of the decentration of the pupil. The MTF graphs showed small differences between the models because of the differences in their ***： All the three models are able to simulate accommodation with the expected results. There is no model that can be assumed as the best choice. Accommodation can be simulated in non-accommodativemodels and in customized ones.

Effect of even and odd-order aberrations on the accommodation response

AIM： To investigate the potential effect that odd and even-order monochromatic aberrations may have on the accommodation response of the human eye. METHODS： Eight healthy subjects with astigmatism below 1 D, best corrected visual acuity 20/20 or better and normal findings in an ophthalmic examination were enrolled. An adaptive optics system was used in order to measure the accommodation response of the subjects＇ eyes under different conditions： with the natural aber- rations being present, and with the odd and even-order aberrations being corrected. Three measurements of accommodation response were monocularly acquired at accommodation demands ranging from 0 to 4 D （0.5 D step）. RESULTS： The accommodative lag was greater for the accommodate demands of 1.5, 3, 3.5 and 4 D for the condition in which the even-order aberrations were corrected, in comparison to that obtained for the natural aberrations and corrected odd-order aberrations for the same accommodation demands. No statistically significant differences were found between the accommodation responses under the three conditions. CONCLUSION： The odd and even-order aberrations are not helping the visual system to accommodate, because their partial correction do not affect the accommodation performance.

Objective assessment of the effect of pupil size upon the power distribution of multifocal contact lenses

AIM： To analytically assess the effect of pupil size upon the refractive power distributions of different designs of multifocal contact ***： Two multifocal contact lenses of center-near design and one multifocal contact lens of center-distance design were used in this study. Their power profiles were measured using the NIMO TR1504 device （LAMBDA-X, Belgium）. Based on their power profiles, the power distribution was assessed as a function of pupil size. For the high addition lenses, the resulting refractive power as a function of viewing distance （far, intermediate, and near） and pupil size was also ***： The power distribution of the lenses was affected by pupil size differently. One of the lenses showed a significant spread in refractive power distribution, from about ？3 D to 0 D. Generally, the power distribution of the lenses expanded as the pupil diameter became greater. The surface of the lens dedicated for each distance varied substantially with the design of the ***： In an experimental basis, our results show how the lenses power distribution is affected by the pupil size and underlined the necessity of careful evaluation of the patient’s visual needs and the optical properties of a multifocal contact lens for achieving the optimal visual outcome.

Repeatability of in-vitro optical quality measurements of intraocular lenses with a deflectometry technique effect of the toricity

AIM： To evaluate the repeatability of an optical device for measuring the Zernike coefficients of toric intraocular lenses（IOLs） and assess whether its toricity has any impact in its repeatability. METHODS： An experienced technician used the NIMO TR1504 to measure the Zernike coefficients 30 times for an aperture of 4.50 mm for all lenses included. The IOLs included were divided into two group： toric and nontoric ones. The cylindrical powers of the toric lenses included in the present study were 1.00, 1.50, 2.25, 3.00 and 3.75 D. Finally, the repeatability of the NIMO TR1504 was described in terms of within subject standard deviation（Sw） and repeatability limit. RESULTS： The Sw was smaller than 0.011 μm for both lens groups and all Zernike coefficients, and the difference between both groups was smaller than 0.004 μm for all Zernike coefficients. Regarding the repeatability limit, this value was smaller than 0.025 μm for the toric lens group, and smaller than 0.031 μm for the non-toric lens one for all Zernike coefficients. Furthermore, the maximum difference between both lens groups was 0.010 μm. CONCLUSION： The repeatability of the NIMO TR1504 to measure the optical quality is high and independent of the lens toricity. These results reflect that this system is robust and could be used to measure the in-vitro optical quality of either toric or non-toric IOLs.

Design and Implementation of an Extended Collectives Library for Unified Parallel C

Unified Parallel C （UPC） is a parallel extension of ANSI C based on the Partitioned Global Address Space （PGAS） programming model, which provides a shared memory view that simplifies code development while it can take advantage of the scalability of distributed memory architectures. Therefore, UPC allows programmers to write parallel applications on hybrid shared/distributed memory architectures, such as multi-core clusters, in a more productive way, accessing remote memory by means of different high-level language constructs, such as assignments to shared variables or collective primitives. However, the standard UPC collectives library includes a reduced set of eight basic primitives with quite limited functionality. This work presents the design and implementation of extended UPC collective functions that overcome the limitations of the standard collectives library, allowing, for example, the use of a specific source and destination thread or defining the amount of data transferred by each particular thread. This library fulfills the demands made by the UPC developers community and implements portable algorithms, independent of the specific UPC compiler/runtime being used. The use of a representative set of these extended collectives has been evaluated using two applications and four kernels as case studies. The results obtained confirm the suitability of the new library to provide easier programming without trading off performance, thus achieving high productivity in parallel programming to harness the performance of hybrid shared/distributed memory architectures in high performance computing.

Changing Concentrations of Heavy Metals in Stream Water as a Result of Slurry Application to Soil

Several studies focused on nutrients have shown that land use and management practices have a strong influence on stream chemistry. Much less is known about the relationship between heavy metal concentrations in stream water and land use. We compared the variability of trace element concentrations in the stream of a catchment exposed to different types of management practices and land use. This is a small catchment with previous agricultural diffuse and accidental pollution mainly due to the spreading of slurry. The agricultural land was reforested in July 1998. The concentrations of Fe, Mn, Cu and Zn in dissolved phase from surface water samples collected at the catchment outlet were determined over a period of approximately six years. The results suggest that dissolved metal concentrations, especially Cu and Mn, are controlled by the land use and management practices. The median concentrations of studied metals were the highest in the agricultural period. It was also during this period when they all presented the highest concentration peaks, coinciding with a time of heavy application of manure to the soil. Dissolved Fe and Mn showed high dependence of flow rate, whereas Cu and Zn concentrations seemed to be independent of flow.

Background: Oxidative stress and inflammation are related to the pathophysiology of diabetes mellitus (DM), being involved in the development of micro-and macrovascular complications. Physical activity is beneficial for DM patients, but little is known about the relationship between redox and inflammation biomarkers and the level of physical activity in these patients. Based on this, this research aims to evaluate the effects of physical activity level on redox stress parameters and inflammatory markers in T2DM patients. Methods: Eighty-four patients with T2DM were divided according to their physical activity level: group A (n = 48), sedentary;group B (n = 11) active (3 times a week, 150 min) and group C (n = 25), highly active (5 times a week, 150 - 300 mins, at least). Anthropometric and biochemical parameters, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activities, as well as GSH, sRAGE and ICAM-1 levels were assessed. Results: Glycated haemoglobin, total cholesterol, and LDL-cholesterol levels were lower in the highly active group in comparison to other groups. Plasma SOD activity was higher in group C compared to Group A, while ICAM-1 levels were significantly higher in group B when compared to other groups. Conclusion: Our results suggest that the practice of physical activity is beneficial to T2DM patients, especially at high volume and frequency.
