Remediation of nutrient-rich waters using the terrestrial plant, Pandanus amaryllifolius Roxb.

Effective control of eutrophication is generally established through the reduction of nutrient loading into waterways and water bodies. An economically viable and ecologically sustainable approach to nutrient pollution control could involve the integration of retention ponds, wetlands and greenways into water management systems. Plants not only play an invaluable role in the assimilation and removal of nutrients, but they also support fauna richness and can be aesthetically pleasing. Pandanus amaryllifolius, a tropical terrestrial plant, was found to establish well in hydrophytic conditions and was highly effective in remediating high nutrient levels in an aquatic environment showing 100% removal of NO^-N up to 200 mg/L in 14 days. Phosphate uptake by the plant was less efficient with 64% of the PO4-P removed at the maximum concentration of 100 mg/L at the end of 6 weeks. With its high NO^-N and PO43--P removal efficiency, P. amaryllifolius depleted the nutrient-rich media and markedly contained the natural colonization of algae. The impediment of algal growth led to improvements in the water quality with significant decreases in turbidity, pH and electrical conductivity. In addition, the plants did not show stress symptoms when grown in high nutrient levels as shown by the changes in their biomass, total soluble proteins and chlorophyll accumulation as well as photochemical efficiency. Thus, P. amaryUifolius is a potential candidate for the mitigation of nutrient pollution in phytoremediation systems in the tropics as the plant requires low maintenance, is tolerant to the natural variability of weather conditions and fluctuating hydro-periods, and exhibit good nutrient removal capabilities.

马占相思(Acacia mangium)是一种具有较高经济价值和生态效益的热带速生树种。为了研究其光合作用对一天内光强、温度等环境因子变化的响应,揭示其迅速生长的生理生态机制,在叶片水平上测量了马占相思在24h内的净光合速率(Pn)、蒸腾速率、气孔导度(Gs)、胞间CO2浓度(Gi)、每日固定碳的总量、夜间消耗碳的总量以及日问光合系统Ⅱ光化学效率(Fv/Fm)的变化。结果显示:其净光合速率在正午降低了14.5％;其较高的蒸腾速率和气孔导度有助于保持叶片日间较高的碳固定速率;光合系统Ⅱ对于高光强和高温有较强的忍受度;每日固定碳的总量为502 mmol CO2·m-2,夜间碳的损失为54 mmol CO2·m-2。研究结果在一定程度上揭示了马占相思在热带高光强和高温条件下迅速生长的生理机制。

The Phytoremediation Potential of a Singapore Forest Tree for Bioretention Systems

Tree species have large biomass and extensive root systems, giving them great potential for phytoremediation. It is beneficial to plant native species as these species are naturally adapted to the local climate and growth conditions, and they can support local biodiversity as well. Elateriospermum tapos (E. tapos) Blume tree saplings were investigated in pot experiments to understand their phytoremediation potential. The saplings were planted in a soil-based mediumof known composition with pots of unplanted soil as control. Tap water spiked with 10mg/L nitrate and 2mg/L phosphate was used to represent the highest range of nutrient pollutants found in stormwater in Singapore. Chlorophyll fluorescence and SPAD data showed the plants were healthy throughout the experiments. E. tapos tree saplings showed improved nitrate removal compared to barren pots. In addition, the nitrate removal efficiency of the barren potsdecreased over time, whereas the nitrate removal efficiency of vegetated pots increased over time. At the end of the experiments, all plants were harvested and destructive analysis showed that Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen (TKN) in the dried plant parts was significantly higher in the leaves of plants irrigated with the water spiked with nitrate and phosphate compared to plants irrigated with tap water. The excess nitrate absorbed by the plant was converted and stored in the leaf biomass. Phosphate removal in both vegetated and barren pots was comparable. The accumulation of TKN in the aboveground biomass of the plants is desirable as excess nitrate taken up by the plants can be removed from the system as harvestable biomass. E. tapos Blume tree saplings have potential for the phytoremediation of nitrate and phosphate found in urban stormwater in Singapore and will be suitable for planting in bioretention systems.

目的基于液相芯片技术探讨香砂六君子汤对脾虚血脂异常人群血清细胞因子的影响。方法依据相应标准选择血脂异常患者(疾病组)25例,给予香砂六君子汤治疗4周,对照组25例为健康体检者。采用Bio-Plex悬液芯片技术检测各组血清样本中12种细胞因子水平含量。结果与对照组相比,疾病组血清中有6种细胞因子水平明显降低,分别是IL-7、IL-8、G-CSF、MCP-1、MIP-1b、TNF-α,差异均有统计学意义(P<0.05);与疾病组相比较,治疗组患者血清中IL-7、IL-8、G-CSF、MCP-1、MIP-1b、TNF-α水平明显升高,差异均有统计学意义(P<0.05)。结论应用Bio-Plex悬液芯片技术进行检测,发现血脂异常患者体内有多种免疫失衡,经香砂六君子汤治疗后可以纠正这一失衡,并改善脾虚状态下膏脂转输障碍,进而防治血脂异常。

Efficacy of Cordyceps sinensis as an adjunctive treatment in hemodialysis patients: a systematic review and Meta-analysis

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate current evidence on the efficacy and safety of Cordyceps sinensis(cordyceps)or its fermented products used as an adjunctive treatment in patients undergoing maintenance ***: The Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials(CENTRAL), EMBASE, MEDLINE, China National Knowledge Infrastructure(CNKI) and Wanfang Database were searched for relevant randomized controlled trials up to March 2016. Two review authors independently selected trials for inclusion,extracted data, assessed the methodological quality and rated the quality of evidence with the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation ***: Twelve studies involving 655 participants were included. Evidence of low to moderate-quality showed that cordyceps plus conventional treatment compared to conventional treatment alone significantly improved C-reactive protein [standardized mean difference(SMD)-0.61; 95% confi-dence intervals(CI)-1.00 to-0.22], high-sensitivity C-reactive protein [weighted mean difference(WMD)-3.44 mg/L; 95% CI-3.89 to-2.99], serum albumin(WMD 3.07 g/L; 95% CI 1.59 to 4.55),malondialdehyde(WMD-1.95 nmol/L; 95% CI-2.24 to-1.66), and hemoglobin(WMD 9.56 g/L;95% CI 3.65 to 15.47) levels. However, there was no significant improvement for serum creatinine and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Overall, most trials either did not monitor adverse events or poorly documented ***: Given the small number of trials included, the unclear methodological quality of the included trials, and the high heterogeneity in pooled analyses, the evidence obtained in this review is insufficient to recommend the use of cordyceps as adjunctive treatment in hemodialysis patients.

Processing parameter optimization of fiber laser beam welding using an ensemble of metamodels and MOABC

In fiber laser beam welding(LBW),the selection of optimal processing parameters is challenging and plays a key role in improving the bead geometry and welding *** study proposes a multi-objective optimization framework by combining an ensemble of metamodels(EMs)with the multi-objective artificial bee colony algorithm(MOABC)to identify the optimal welding *** inverse proportional weighting method that considers the leave-one-out prediction error is presented to construct EM,which incorporates the competitive strengths of three *** constructs the correlation between processing parameters(laser power,welding speed,and distance defocus)and bead geometries(bead width,depth of penetration,neck width,and neck depth)with average errors of 10.95%,7.04%,7.63%,and 8.62%,*** the basis of EM,MOABC is employed to approximate the Pareto front,and verification experiments show that the relative errors are less than 14.67%.Furthermore,the main effect and the interaction effect of processing parameters on bead geometries are *** demonstrate that the proposed EM-MOABC is effective in guiding actual fiber LBW applications.

Low serum albumin predicts early mortality in patients with severe hypoxic hepatitis

AIM To evaluate the incidence, etiology, and predictors of mortality of severe hypoxic hepatitis. METHODS We used computerized patient records to identify consecutive cases of severe hypoxic hepatitis admitted to a tertiary hospital in Singapore over a one-year period. We defined severe hypoxic hepatitis as elevation of serum transaminases more than 100 times upper limit of normal in the clinical setting of cardiac, circulatory or respiratory failure after exclusion of other causes of hepatitis. We used multivariable regression analysis to determine predictors for mortality. RESULTS We identified 75 cases of severe hypoxic hepatitis out of 71380 hospital admissions over one year, providing an incidence of 1.05 cases per 1000 admissions. Median age was 65 years(range 19-88); 57.3% males. The most common etiologies of severe hypoxic hepatitis were acute myocardial infarction and sepsis. Fifty-three patients(71%) died during the hospitalization. The sole independent predictive factor for mortality was serum albumin measured at the onset of severe hypoxic hepatitis. Patients with low serum albumin of less than 28 g/L have more than five-fold increase risk of death(OR = 5.39, 95%CI: 1.85-15.71).CONCLUSION Severe hypoxic hepatitis is uncommon but has a high mortality rate. Patients with low serum albumin are at highest risk of death.

本试验旨在研究番鸭正常蛋、沙壳蛋和条纹蛋等3种不同质地蛋壳在超微结构性状上的异同,并分析蛋壳超微结构性状与蛋壳强度之间的关联性。试验选用300日龄笼养白羽番鸭所产白色的正常蛋、沙壳蛋和条纹蛋厚度相近的蛋壳各12枚,分别作为3种不同质地蛋壳的试验组,每组设12个重复,每个重复1枚蛋壳。使用S3400N型扫描电镜观察蛋壳的超微结构,测定乳突层厚度和乳突间隙,计算有效厚度和平均乳突大小。结果表明:1)蛋壳强度在3种蛋之间差异显著(P沙壳蛋>条纹蛋;3种蛋间蛋形指数和钙化壳重差异均不显著(P>0.05)。2)在超微结构上,沙壳蛋和条纹蛋蛋壳的外表面皲裂较正常蛋蛋壳多而深,气孔较多,表观不平整;与正常蛋蛋壳相比,沙壳蛋蛋壳内表面纤维疏松凌乱,纤维间空隙较多,而条纹蛋蛋壳内表面纤维分布较沙壳蛋更为稀少,纤维间有明显间隙;沙壳蛋和条纹蛋蛋壳的横断面平整性和致密度都更差,乳突层与壳膜层联系也更加不紧密。在超微结构性状中,3种蛋壳间的钙化壳厚度和平均乳突大小差异不显著(P>0.05);沙壳蛋和条纹蛋蛋壳的乳突间隙均显著大于正常蛋蛋壳(P0.05);乳突层厚度在3种蛋壳之间均存在显著差异(P沙壳蛋>条纹蛋。3)3种蛋壳的乳突层厚度与蛋壳强度呈显著负相关(P0.05)。由此可见,厚度相似的番鸭正常蛋、沙壳蛋和条纹蛋蛋壳其蛋壳强度和超微结构均存在显著差异,其中乳突层厚度和乳突间隙与蛋壳强度均呈显著负相关,有效厚度与蛋壳强度呈显著正相关;在超微结构层面上,乳突层厚度、乳突间隙及有效厚度是影响蛋壳强度的主要因素。
