A new species, Tsuga nanfengensis ***.（Pinaceae）, is described on the basis of lignified fossil wood from the late Miocene of the Xianfeng Basin, central Yunnan, southwestern *** observation of the fossil wood specimens show the following characteristics： distinct growth rings, absence of resin canals, uniseriate bordered pits in the radial wall of tracheids, ray tracheids and piceoid and cupressoid cross-field *** features indicate similarities to the wood of extant Tsuga canadensis, ***, and *** to the fossil record, Tsuga was present in Xundian County during the *** Tsuga is drought intolerant, preferring wet conditions with no extant species growing naturally in Xundian *** presence of Tsuga in the Miocene of Xundian County indicates a humid climate consistent with previous palaeoclimatic reconstructions showing a wetter and probably shorter dry season in the Miocene, relative to the present ***, the change in the local climate such as increasing aridity through the Miocene might explain the local extinction of Tsuga from central Yunnan.

Chaotic mixing of distinct fluids produces a convoluted structure to the interface separating these fluids. For miscible fluids （as considered here）, this interface is defined as a 50% mass concentration isosurface. For shock wave induced （Richtmyer-Meshkov） instabilities, we find the interface to be increasingly complex as the computational mesh is refined. This interfacial chaos is cut off by viscosity, or by the computational mesh if the Kolmogorov scale is small relative to the mesh. In a regime of converged interface statistics, we then examine mixing, i.e. concentration statistics, regularized by mass diffusion. For Schmidt numbers significantly larger than unity, typical of a liquid or dense plasma, additional mesh refinement is normally needed to overcome numerical mass diffusion and to achieve a converged solution of the mixing problem. However, with the benefit of front tracking and with an algorithm that allows limited interface diffusion, we can assure convergence uniformly in the Schmidt number. We show that different solutions result from variation of the Schmidt number. We propose subgrid viscosity and mass diffusion parameterizations which might allow converged solutions at realistic grid levels.

Indus-2 is a synchrotron radiation source that is operational at RRCAT, Indore, India. It is essentially pertinent in any synchrotron radiation facility to store the electron beam without beam loss. during the day to day operation of Indus-2 storage ring, difficulty was being faced in accumulating higher beam current. After examination, it was found that the working point was shifting from its desired value during accumulation. For smooth beam accumulation, a fixed desired tune in both horizontal and vertical plane plays a significant role in avoiding beam loss via the resonance process. This required a betatron tune feedback system to be put in the storage ring. After putting ON this feedback, the beam accumulation was smooth. The details of this feedback and its working principle are described in this paper.

A metallic disk with strong spin orbit interaction is investigated. The finite disk geometry introduces a confining potential. due to the strong spin-orbit interaction and confining potential the metal disk is described by an effective one-dimensional model with a harmonic potential. The harmonic potential gives rise to classical turning points. As a result, open boundary conditions must be used. We bosonize the model and obtain chiral Bosons for each spin on the edge of the disk. When the filling fraction is reduced to the electron-electron interactions are studied by using the Jordan Wigner phase for composite fermions which give rise to a Luttinger liquid. When the metallic disk is in the proximity with a superconductor, a Fractional Topological Insulator is obtained. An experimental realization is proposed. We show that by tunning the chemical potential we control the classical turning points for which a Fractional Topological Insulator is realized.

Quasi-isotropic laminates have isotropic elastic properties in all in-plane directions. Therefore, this kind of laminate is widely used for structural elements. The simplest stacking sequence of quasi-isotropic laminates is [0/-60/60]s. When the direction of applied axial load to [0/-60/60]S laminate is inclined at a 30-degree angle, we have the other quasi-isotropic laminate [30/-30/90]s under axial load. The failure mechanisms of these two laminates are, however, entirely different from each other because these two laminates have different distribution of the interlaminar stresses. It was confirmed by tensile fatigue tests that the [0/-60/60]s laminate does not show any visible fatigue damage, but the [30/-30/90]s laminate develops edge-delamination during cyclic loading. The analytical results were in good agreement with the experimental results.

Process control parameters influencing microbial perchlorate reduction via a flow-through zero-valent iron （ZVI） column reactor were investigated in order to optimize perchlorate removal from water. Mixed perchlorate reducers were obtained from a wastewater treatment plant and inoculated into the reactor without further acclimation. Examined parameters included hydraulic residence time （HRT）, pH, nutrients requirement, and perchlorate reduction kinetics. The minimum HRT for the system was concluded to be 8 hr. The removal efficiency of 10 mg. L-1 influent perchlorate concentration was reduced by 20%-80% without control to the neutral pH （HRT = 8 hr）. Therefore pH was determined to be an important parameter for microbial perchlorate reduction. Furthermore, a viable alternative to pH buffer was discussed. The microbial perchlorate reduction followed the first order kinetics, with a rate constant （K） of 0.761 hr-1. The results from this study will contribute to the implementation of a safe, cost effective, and efficient system for perchlorate reduction to below regulated levels.

The complete restoration of a perfect carbon lattice has been a central issue in the research on graphene derived from graphite oxide since this preparation route was first proposed several years ago, but such a goal has so far remained elusive. Here, we demonstrate that the highly defective structure of reduced graphene oxide sheets assembled into free-standing, paper-like films can be fully repaired by means of high temperature annealing （graphitization）. Characterization of the films by X-ray photoelectron and Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and scanning tunneling microscopy indicated that the main stages in the transformation of the films were （i） complete removal of oxygen functional groups and generation of atomic vacancies （up to 1,500 ~C）, and （ii） vacancy annihilation and coalescence of adjacent overlapping sheets to yield continuous polycrystalline layers （1,800-2,700 ~C） similar to those of highly oriented graphites. The prevailing type of defect in the polycrystalline layers were the grain boundaries separating neighboring domains, which were typically a few hundred nanometers in lateral size, exhibited long-range graphitic order and were virtually free of even atomic-sized defects. The electrical conductivity of the annealed films was as high as 577,000 S-m-1, which is by far the largest value reported to date for any material derived from graphene oxide, and strategies for further improvement without the need to resort to higher annealing temperatures are suggested. Overall, this work opens the prospect of truly achieving a complete restoration of the carbon lattice in graphene oxide materials.

Tea （Camellia sinensis） is one of the most valuable cash crops in southern China; however, the planting distribution of tea crops is not optimal and the production and cultivation regions of tea crops are restricted by law and custom. In order to evaluate the suitability of tea crops in Zhejiang Province, the annual mean temperature, the annual accumulated temperature above 10 ℃, the frequency of extremely low temperature below -13 ℃, the mean humidity from April to October, slope, aspect, altitude, soil type, and soil texture were selected from climate, topography, and soil factors as factors for land ecological evaluation by the delphi method based on the ecological characteristics of tea crops. These nine factors were quantitatively analyzed using a geographic information system （GIS）. The grey relational analysis （GRA） was combined with the analytic hierarchy process （AHP） to address the uncertainties during the process of evaluating the traditional land ecological suitability, and a modified land ecological suitability evaluation （LESE） model was built. Based on the land-use map of Zhejiang Province, the regions that were completely unsuitable for tea cultivation in the province were eliminated and then the spatial distribution of the ecological suitability of tea crops was generated using the modified LESE model and GIS. The results demonstrated that the highly, moderately, and non-suitable regions for the cultivation of tea crops in Zhejiang Province were 27552.66, 42 724.64, and 26507.97 km2, and accounted for 28.47%, 44.14%, and 27.39% of the total evaluation area, respectively. Validation of the method showed a high degree of coincidence with the current planting distribution of tea crops in Zhejiang Province.
