The Oulad Dlim Massif,adjacent to the Reguibat Shield in South Morocco was considered up to now as part of the Variscan belt(Mauritanides)with a polyphase geologic history and a complex geodynamic evolution implicating oceans closures and accretion of exotic terranes(Avalonian and Meguman)during the Variscan-Alleghanian orogeny.The use of modern technology to characterize the petrology,the geochemistry and the geochronology of the lithological units forming this region,combined to field surveys has led to an updated geological architecture and different geological history.The Oulad Dlim Massif is mainly a deformed Archean terrane,as recorded by its eastern and western sectors,dominated in its central part by a bimodal felsic-mafic magmatism forming the Ediacaran sector.The study of these magmatic complexes supports strongly the intracontinental origin of this bimodal magmatism vs.the oceanic origin published before in literature.The exploration of this massif conducted also to the identification of a Silurian-Devonian sector in the western part.Therefore,up to date,different magmatic events lasting from the Meso-Archean to the Cretaceous are recorded in the Oulad Dlim Massif rocks,among them different generations of granitoids are reported.New data on granitoids from the Ediacaran sector are presented in this paper.This recent data demonstrates that Oulad Dlim Massif has been affected by the main Ediacaran–Cambrian extensional event widely documented in other structural domains of Morocco and other parts of North Gondwana.Additionally,the study of the Silurian-Devonian sector rocks highlighted the presence of a Caledonian tectonic event challenging the ideas about the paleogeography of this part of northwestern Africa and its geological evolution during the Paleozoic.However,despite the significant contribution of this extensive survey and the abundance of data on the Oulad Dlim Massif,more studies are required to reconstruct the puzzle at plate tectonic scale.

Bacterial Exofactors Modulate Biofilm Growth and Resistivity to Antimicrobial Drugs

Some bacteria have the ability to co-exist, proliferate and survive in a multicellular community, biofilm. Each participating bacteria can form its colonies and encases itself by a self-produced insoluble extracellular matrix substance (EPS). Microcolonies within biofilm are held together by interactions and bonding of the substances present in the EPS with their separation from the water channels. Similar to insoluble EPS, bacterial microcolonies release soluble exofactors that have direct impacts on the survivability, growth and antibacterial resistivity of other microcolonies made of single- or multi-species bacteria in the same biofilm. How the exofactors of microcolonies of one-type bacteria impact on microcolonies of other-type bacteria is still unclear. We studied about the role of exofactors released from Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which are common biofilm-forming pathogenic bacteria. Exofactors facilitate to transform the microenvironment where bacteria can acquire alternative lifestyle with a long survival period and resistivity to certain antimicrobial drugs.

Genomic clines across the species boundary between a hybrid pine and its progenitor in the eastern Tibetan Plateau

Most species have clearly defined distribution ranges and ecological niches.The genetic and ecological causes of species differentiation and the mechanisms that maintain species boundaries between newly evolved taxa and their progenitors are,however,less clearly defined.This study investigated the genetic structure and clines in Pinus densata,a pine of hybrid origin on the southeastern Tibetan Plateau,to gain an understanding of the contemporary dynamics of species barriers.We analyzed genetic diversity in a range-wide collection of P.densata and representative populations of its progenitors,Pinus tabuliformis and Pinus yunnanensis,using exome capture sequencing.We detected four distinct genetic groups within P.densata that reflect its migration history and major gene-flow barriers across the landscape.The demographies of these genetic groups in the Pleistocene were associated with regional glaciation histories.Interestingly,population sizes rebounded rapidly during interglacial periods,suggesting persistence and resilience of the species during the Quaternary ice age.In the contact zone between P.densata and P.yunnanensis,3.36%of the analyzed loci(57849)showed exceptional patterns of introgression,suggesting their potential roles in either adaptive introgression or reproductive isolation.These outliers showed strong clines along critical climate gradients and enrichment in a number of biological processes relevant to high-altitude adaptation.This indicates that ecological selection played an important role in generating genomic heterogeneity and a genetic barrier across a zone of species transition.Our study highlights the forces that operate to maintain species boundaries and promote speciation in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and other mountain systems.

Metasomatic Stages and Scapolitization Effects on Chemical Composition of Pasveh Pluton,NW Iran

Pasveh gabbros are mafic component of a plutonic complex in the northwest Sanandaj- Sirjan Zone. These cumulative rocks are composed of plagioclase and calcic clinopyroxene （Cpx）, which yield unusually high CaO （〉19 wt.%） in whole-rock chemistry. Petrographical and geochemical data suggest that Pasveh gabbros can be divided into two groups： free scapolite and scapolite-bearing gabbros. The second group has higher Na20, K20, and P205 relative to free scapolite ones and is enriched in LIL （large ion lithophile） and HFS （high field strength） elements. Two stages of metasomatism affected the primary composition of mafic rocks. Firstly, high temperature reaction caused to invert primary high Ti clinopyroxene to low Ti cUnopyroxene＋high Ti amphibole. This reaction was extensive and included all gabbroic samples. Hydrothermal fluids involved in this process can be derived from dehydration reactions of country rocks or from other magmas incorporated in the formation of Pasveh complex pluton. The second metasomatic stage relates to scapolitization of limited parts of gabbroic rocks. An external saline fluid, which is composed of major NaCI and minor KCI and P205 components, impacted locally on Pasveh gabbros and formed the second metasomatic stage. Possible sources of Na and Cl are primary evaporites or brines, which were present in the host sediments of the gabbros. The carbonate-free nature of these hydrothermal fluids suggests that hydrothermal fluids responsible for the formation of scapolite in Pasveh gabbros are derived from marine evaporitic parentage.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: a complex syndrome that needs an integrated research approach

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, the most common neurodegenerative disease affecting motor neurons, lacks an effective treatment. A small fraction of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis cases have a familial origin, related to mutations in causative genes, while the vast majority of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis cases are considered to be sporadic, resulting from the interaction between genes and environmental factors in predisposed individuals. During the past few years, dozens of drugs have been postulated as promising strategies for the disease after showing some beneficial effects in preclinical cellular and murine models. However, the translation into clinical practice has been largely unsuccessful and the compounds failed when were tested in clinical trials. This might be explained, at least partially, by the enormous complexity of the disease both from clinico-epidemiological and a pathogenic points of view. In this review, we will briefly comment on the complexity of the disease focusing on some recent findings, and we will suggest how amyotrophic lateral sclerosis research might be reoriented to foster the advance in the diagnostic and therapeutic questions.

Predation risk affects egg mass but not egg steroid hormone concentrations in yellow-legged gulls

Predators have both direct, consumptive effects on their prey and non-lethal effects on physiology and behavior, including reproductive decisions, with cascading effects on prey ecology and evol tion. Here, we experime ntally tested such non-lethal effects of exposure to in creased predati on risk on clutch size, egg mass, and the concentration of yolk steroid hormones in the yellow-legged gull Larus michahellis. We simulated increased predation risk by displaying stuffed predators (adult fox Vulpes vulpes, and adult buzzard Buteo buteo) to breeding adults before egg laying. The concentration of corticosterone, which has bee n show n to in crease un der exposure to mater nal predati on risk in other species, and of testosterone did not differ between eggs from mothers exposed to the predators and eggs from control mothers (i.e., eggs exposed to a novel object of similar size and position to the stuffed predators). The concentration of the two hormones negatively covaried. Clutch size did not vary according to experimental treatment, whereas egg mass was markedly larger in clutches from n ests exposed to predators than in clutches from control n ests. By in creasing egg mass, mothers may reduce the risk of cooling of the eggs when incubation is impeded by predators, boost energy reserves, reduce post-natal detectability caused by food solicitation, and/ or enha nee developme nt at hatchi ng, thus increasing the cha nces of offspri ng survival. In general, our results are inconsistent with most of the few previous studies on similar non-lethal predator effects and suggest that such effects may vary among species according to ecological conditions, social behavior, and developmental mode.

Background:Probiosis is considered a potential strategy to reduce antibiotics use and prevent postweaning diarrhea(PWD).This study investigated the effect of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens DSM25840 or Bacillus subtilis DSM25841 supplementation on growth,health,immunity,intestinal functionality and microbial profile of post-weaning pigs after enterotoxigenic E.coli(ETEC)F4 challenge.Methods:Sixty-four post-weaning piglets(7748 g±643 g)were randomly al ocated to four groups:control basal diet(CO);CO+1.28×10~6 CFU/g of B.amyloliquefaciens(BAA);CO+1.28×10~6 CFU/g feed of B.subtilis(BAS);CO+1 g colistin/kg of feed(AB).At day(d)7,animals were chal enged with 10~5 CFU/m L of ETEC F4 ac O149 and then fol owed for fecal score and performance until d 21.Blood was col ected at d 6,d 12 and d 21 for immunoglobulins,at d 8 for acute phase proteins,at d 8 and d 21 for metabolomics analysis.Jejunum was sampled for morphometry,quantification of apoptosis,cel proliferation,neutral and acid mucine and Ig A secretory cel s,and microarray analysis at d 21.Jejunum and cecum contents were col ected for microbiota at d 21.Results:AB and BAS reduced the fecal score impairment compared to CO(P<0.05)at d 14.Body weight(BW),average daily weight gain(ADWG),average daily feed intake(ADFI)and gain to feed ratio(G:F)did not differ between Bacil us groups and CO.AB improved BW at d 7,d 14 and d 21,ADWG ADFI and G:F from d 0 to d 7(P<0.05).At d 8,CO had higher plasma arginine,lysine,ornithine,glycine,serine and threonine than other groups,and higher haptoglobin than AB(P<0.05).At d 21,CO had lower blood glycine,glutamine and Ig A than BAS.Morphology,cel s apoptosis and mucins did not differ.BAS and AB increased the vil us mitotic index.Transcriptome profile of BAS and AB were more similar than CO.Gene sets related to adaptive immune response were enriched in BAA,BAS and AB.CO had enriched gene set for nuclear structure and RNA processing.CO had a trend of higher Enterobacteriaceae in cecum than the other groups(P=0.06).Conclusion:Bacil us subtilis D
