Background: Acut. Flaccid Paralysis (AFP) was adopt.d by World Healt. Organizat.on (WHO) in 1988 as a key pillar used in monit.ring progress t.wards t.e global polio eradicat.on init.at.ve. High qualit. AFP surveillance is essent.al t. support.t.is global init.at.ve. We applied recent.y developed case verificat.on met.ods for t.e quant.t.t.ve evaluat.on of AFP cases report.d t. t.e surveillance syst.ms t. evaluat. t.e qualit. of AFP report. in Akwa Ibom St.t., Nigeria. Object.ves: t.e aim of t.is st.dy is t. ident.fy t.e demographic, clinical and epidemiological at.ribut.s and qualit. of acut. flaccid paralysis surveillance. Met.ods: All AFP cases report.d in children 0 - 14 years during January 2006 t. December 2012 were invest.gat.d and verified by WHO surveillance officers, using st.ndard quest.onnaire. t.o st.ol samples 24 - 48 hours apart.from a t.t.l of 1184 AFP cases were collect.d wit.in 14 days of onset.of paralysis wit. t.e prior oral/verbal informed consent.and t.ansport.d t. t.e nat.onal polio laborat.ry under reverse cold chain. Result. In all, 885/1184 represent.ng 75% of t.e AFP cases report.d were verified by WHO officers in t.e period under review. Overall, 534/885 (60.3%) of AFP cases had more t.an >3 doses of Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV), while 196/885 (22.2%) received 3 dose of OPV and 128/885 (14.5%) received bet.een 1 - 2 doses of OPV. It.was int.rest.ng t.at.27/885 (3%) never received OPV before. Overall, 743/885 (84.0%) were report.d wit.in ≤14 days of paralysis onset. while 142/885 (16%) were report.d aft.r ≥14 days of paralysis onset. In t.t.l, 797/885 (90.1%) of cases were found t. have fever at.t.e onset.of paralysis;paralysis was found t. be asymmet.ic in 805/885 (91%). Wast.ng or diminished muscle t.ne was observed in 34.0% of cases verified, while deep t.ndon reflexes were good (normal) in 79% of cases. Gullain-Barre syndrome was observed in 50.9% of t.e report.d cases followed by inject.on neurit.s (25.0%) and t.ansverse myelit.s (2.0%).

Giemsa’s st.in and examined microscopically;packed cell volume(PCV) was measured using haemat.crit.machine and body t.mperat.res wit. t.e aid of paediat.ic t.ermomet.rs;ot.er ant.ropomet.ic measurement. were also *** relevant.informat.on on t.e children and t.eir parent. were obt.ined wit. t.e aid of a st.uct.red *** obt.ined was analysed using Epi Info st.t.st.cal s of t.are,P values≤0.05 were considered ***:t.e incidence of Plasmodium falciparum parasit.emia was 32.3%among t.e 502 children;85.9%(n=139) of children wit. malaria parasit.s were anaemic and 88.9%(8/9) of t.e children wit. fever had *** were commonet.in children aged one year and above(P<.0.05).Use of insect.cide t.eat.d bed net.(t.Ns) was 24.7%(n=124) while 27.9%(n=140) used unt.eat.d bed *** was no significant.difference in malaria incidence among t.ose who used It.s, unt.eat.d net. and ot.er unconvent.onal cont.ol met.ods(P>.0.05).Educat.onal level of mot.ers had no significant.impact.on t.e incidence of malaria among t.e children(P>.0.05),while occupat.on had(P<. 0.05).Conclusions:Malaria and anaemia are st.ll major healt. problems in Makurdi cit. as in several ot.er part. of sub-Saharan *** of It.s and massive healt. educat.on at.t.e grass root.should be st.pped up,and possibly supply of facilit.es for rapid malaria diagnosis t. t.e communit. should be considered.

Background: Gest.t.onal Diabet.s Mellit.s (GDM) is associat.d wit. several mat.rnal and perinat.l complicat.ons. Early det.ct.on and t.eat.ent.can improve pregnancy out.omes. Object.ves: t. det.rmine t.e prevalence, risk fact.rs and predict.rs of GDM in early pregnancy at.t.e Universit. of Port.Harcourt.t.aching Hospit.l, (UPt.), Port.Harcourt.Nigeria. Met.ods: A cohort.of 235 mot.ers who regist.red for ant.nat.l care bet.een 15 - 18 weeks of gest.t.on at.UPt. was prospect.vely st.died. t.eir socio-demographic dat., examinat.on findings, ant.ropomet.ic measurement., fast.ng blood sugar at.booking and OGt. result. at.28 weeks gest.t.on were collat.d and ent.red int. PC wit. SPSS for windows version 21.0 which was also used for t.e analysis. Variables were expressed as absolut. numbers, percent.ges or means wit. st.ndard deviat.ons and significant.differences det.rmined using chi square t.st.or t.e st.dent.“t. t.st.as appropriat.. t.e level of significance was set.at.P t.: Of t.e 235 part.cipant., 35 (14.9%) developed GDM. Women who had GDM were significant.y older (P = 0.001), had higher weight.(t.= 2.95, P = 0.01), BMI (t.= 2.29, P = 0.02), abdominal skin fold t.ickness (t.= 4.15, P = 0.001), blood pressure (t.= 3.38, P = 0.001) compared t. women who did not. Previous hist.ry of GDM was significant.y different.bet.een t.o groups as χ2 = 93.56 and P = 0.001. Abdominal skin fold t.ickness and prior GDM hist.ry were found t. be independent.predict.rs of GDM on applicat.on of mult.ple logist.c regression analysis. Conclusion: t.e prevalence of GDM in Port.Harcourt.is 14.9% and major risk fact.rs are obesit., previous GDM hist.ry, advanced age and hypert.nsion. Abdominal skin fold t.ickness ≥ 20 mm is an independent.predict.r. t.e risk of developing GDM can be predict.d in early second t.imest.r using algorit.m incorporat.ng risk fact.r screening and ant.rior abdominal wall skin fold t.ickness est.mat.on.

Microbiological Analysis of Sachet.and t.p Wat.r in Enugu St.t. of Nigeria

t.e microbiological qualit. of sachet.and t.p wat.r in Enugu,St.t.,Nigeriawas analyzed. Sachet.wat.r was purchased from five different.manufact.rers. Samples Q1, t., R1, J1, and M1 were direct.y from t.e manufact.rers while samples Q2, t., R2, J2, and M2 were obt.ined from t.e ret.ilers. t.p wat.r was collect.d from t.ree different.locat.ons in t.e t.wn. All wat.r samples were subject.d t. bact.riological (aerobic and anaerobic) and fungal st.dies using st.ndard bact.riological and mycological met.ods wit. lit.le modificat.ons. For sachet.wat.r, bat.h of five packet. bot. from t.e manufact.rer and ret.ilers were analysed and average result.t.ken. Five separat. t.p wat.r samples were t.ken from t.e t.ree different.locat.ons. For sachet.wat.r, E. coli and S. faecalis were isolat.d wit. colony forming unit. (CFU) ranging from 7 t. >500. For t.p wat.r, isolat.s included Coliform, Cl. sp and Penicillium sp. An average of 66% Clost.idium sp was recovered from all t.e t.p wat.r of t.e 3 different.locat.ons. Penicillium sp was isolat.d from only 16.6% of t.p samples. Microbial qualit. may vary rapidly and widely but.short.t.rm peaks in pat.ogen concent.at.on may increase disease risks considerably and may also t.igger out.reaks of wat.rborne disease.

Akpabuyo is a dense forest.zone near t.e creeks leading t. t.e At.ant.c ocean in Cross River St.t., Nigeria. t.e locat.on has dist.nct.environment.l charact.rist.cs t.at.made Akpabuyo Area Council, a challenging locat.on t. propagat. elect.omagnet.c waves;and t.erefore recipe for furt.er invest.gat.on. Radio frequency analyzer, wit. 24 channels spect.um, ranging bet.een 46 - 870 MHz (model: ***.R.-“DLM3-t.) was deployed t. capt.re signals from t.rrest.ial t.levision st.t.ons (t.). CAt. measured signal of t. st.t.ons in dB, dBμV and dBmV. It. frequency ranged from 40 - 860 MHz;while varying from channel 1 t. channel 69. Measurement. t.ken from Akpabuyo L.G.A. showed t.e following result.: t.e signal st.engt. received from VHF Channel 11 ranged from 20 dBμV t. 49 dBμV. From recorded empirical st.t.st.cs from t.e st.dy, 50% of t.e area received signal from t.is st.t.on above 30 dBμV, while ot.er regions had signals below t.is value;represent.ng t.e fringe zone of t.e frequency. t.e result. obt.ined from t.e st.dy relat.vely showed accept.nce wit. Egli’s model. t.e st.dy recorded a st.ady fluct.at.on bet.een 17 dBμV and 19 dBμV from bot. propagat.ng st.t.ons. However, Channel 27 signal at.519 MHz, had very weak signal coverage in Akpabuyo Local Government.Area;wit. signal st.engt. dropped t. as low as 13 dB in many part. of t.e rural area. t.e st.dy discovered t.at.t.e st.t.’s broadcast.ng st.t.ons, bot. at.UHF and VHF channels did not.t.ansmit.successfully across t.is densely forest.(rural) locat.on. Remedial measures such as inst.lling Repeat.r st.t.ons at.different.locat.ons as signal boost.r were recommended.

Art.met.er-Lumefant.ine and considered t.e most.effect.ve and approved by WHO. t.e st.dy collect.d and reviewed recent.randomized cont.olled t.ials for t.e t.eat.ent.of uncomplicat.d malaria under five children. Eligibilit. crit.ria for t.e select.d st.dies were based on t.e use of t.ols such as PICO (t. and dat. ext.act.on t.ols such as REPOSE guidelines, PRISMA st.t.ment.and eligibilit. crit.ria. t.is st.dy includes only RCt. on t.e t.eat.ent.of uncomplicat.d malaria under 5 s. Dat. was analyzed t.rough comparat.ve-narrat.ve analysis. t.is st.dy found 8 st.dies. Select.d st.dies had a t.t.l of 10,682 part.cipant. wit.in t.e age range of 0 - 59 mont.s wit. t.e diagnosis of uncomplicat.d malaria and an MCP range of 2000 - 200,000 t.eat.d wit. different.ant.malarial drugs. Art.sunat. + Amodiaquine and Dihydroart.misinin-Piperaquine and Art.met.er-Lumefant.ine drugs were found t. be consist.nt.in t.e t.eat.ent.of uncomplicat.d malaria under 5 s wit.in t.ree days. Findings show t.at.Art.met.er-Lumefant.ine, Art.sunat. + Amodiaquine and Dihydroart.misinin-Piperaquine were t.e best.drugs of choice due t. t.eir fast.rat. in fever reduct.on and parasit. clearance. t.e efficacy of Art.sunat. + Amodiaquine and Dihydroart.misinin-Piperaquine is comparable t. t.ong>Object.ves:t.ong> t.e digest.ve t.ack of mice and humans has always been an int.gral part.of t.e pat.ogenesis of t.e t.ypanosomes but.is const.nt.y overlooked. t.is realizat.on opens up complet.ly new st.at.gies for t.e development.of t.ypanosomes vaccines, allowing approaches t.at.parent.ral delivery forms would not.permit. t.e t.rget.of t.e st.dy was t. compare t.e haemat.logical changes and immunological responses of t.ypanosomiasis model syst.ms (mice and rat.) inoculat.d orally and int.aperit.neally and t. observe t.e aft.rward effect.of a cont.olled drug [Isomet.midium chloride (ISM)] in t.e rest.rat.on of t.ese init.al paramet.rs. t.ong>Met.ods:t.ong> t. achieve t.is, a t.t.l of 40 rodent. (20 rat. and 20 mice) were purchased, t.en grouped int. t.o [sixt.en younger (1 - 5 weeks) and older (7 - 15 weeks) groups each]. t.ey were furt.er sub-grouped int. five each. Body weight., Parasit.emia and Packed Cell Volume (PCV) were t.ken before, aft.r inoculat.on and aft.r t.eat.ent.wit. ISM at.4 mg/kg. t.ong>Result.:t.ong> Based on presumpt.ve clinical diagnosis, all rodent. inoculat.d int.aperit.neally showed clinical signs of fluct.at.ons in weight. PCV and parasit.emia levels before, aft.r inoculat.ons and aft.r t.eat.ent.compared t. t.ose inoculat.d orally wit. a significant.difference (P t. young and older rodent. also responded different.y t. t.e inoculant. and t. t.e different.met.ods of inoculat.on. But.more deat.s were recorded among t.e mice when compared t. t.e rat.. t.ong>Conclusion: t.ong>Alt.ough t.ese non-t.ansgenic models would not.have offered a complet.ly new met.ods t. vaccine development. t.eir differences in response t. various met.ods of inoculat.ons is an indicat.on of an excit.ng research processes and could offer desired result., part.cularly where t.ansgenic rodent. are employed.
